Product Description
A Child's Introduction to the Environment provides an entertaining and instructive tour of the Earth's varied environments, along with activities and materials to encourage young environmentalists.

Kids aged 9-12 and their parents will appreciate this upbeat yet clear-eyed, interactive look at our magnificent planet and how we can safeguard it.

Exploring in turn the water, land, and air around us, the book looks at the wide variety of environmental regions of the world (deserts, forests, cities, farms, ice caps, oceans) as well as the atmosphere, weather, energy sources, plants, and animals of each area. Short features throughout offer fun facts, projects, and experiments that kids can do with parents or on their own. And a special packet inside the front cover contains a reusable lunch sack, peel-off stickers with messages such as "TURN OFF THE LIGHTS," "RECYCLE," and "UNPLUG," and a special poster from the NRDC.

Charming original watercolor illustrations throughout are perfectly paired with an accessible text by a father-and-son team of writers (Dad is a meteorologist). And it is all printed on recycled material, of course! ... Read more

Product Description
This succinct, compact introduction to meteorology is designed especially forthose with minimal background in science and mathematics. Using an exceptionally readable, extensivelyillustrated, and interest-sustaining approach, it describes all the essential features of the atmosphere —including weather, climate, and climate change.Covers all major weather andclimate topics — atmospheric composition and air pollution, clouds and precipitation, atmosphericenergy cycles, causes of wind systems and the jet stream, cyclones and anticyclones, severe weather(including thunderstorms, tornadoes and hurricanes), and cause of climate and climate change (natural andhuman). Describes how weather forecasting is done. Explains how significant changes to the globalenvironment — and probably climate — are being caused by rapidly increasing number of humansand our increased consumption of energy and other raw materials. ... Product Description
This detailed history of meteorology in Canada to 1880 focuses on the establishment and operation of the Magnetic and Meteorological Observatory in Toronto. Established in 1839-40 by the British Government and manned by a Royal Artillery detachment, the Observatory came under the control of the Province of Canada by the 1850s and was supervised by the University of Toronto for the next two decades. Morley Thomas examines the military bureaucracy in the early days of the observatory and discusses the problems encountered by the observatory's director, G. T. Kingston, in trying to establish a climate observing network, the basis for a scientific national meteorological service that would collect climate data and issue daily weather forecasts. ... 5-0 out of 5 stars A very nice introduction to the basics
Although quite compact, this book is packed with useful information. The discussion of water and all the associated moisture variables is complete and organized. It would be difficult to find a better discussion of the wide variety of thermodynamic diagrams available (skew-T ln P, emagram, tephigram, Stuve). The only place where this book suffers is in the lack of vector notation.Don't expect to find references to modern instrumentation--this book was written almost 50 years ago! Nevertheless, the topics chosen have passed the test of time.An excellent introduction to the essential background for all meteorologists.

5-0 out of 5 stars An excellent introduction to theoretical meteorology!
First published in 1959, this text is a true classic and has stood thetest of time. Very few mathematical or gramatical errors (I know of none!).Written in a clear and concise fashion. Truly one of my favoritemeteorology texts! ... Read more

Product Description
This history of the thermometer includes controversy about its invention, thestory of different scales, Fahrenheit and centigrade, and the history of the gradual scientific thenpopular understanding of the concept of temperature. Not until 1800 did people interested inthermometers begin to see clearly what they were measuring, and the impetus for improvingthermometry came largely from study of the weather--the liquid-in-glass thermometer became themeteorologist's instrument before that of the chemist or physicist. This excellent introductorystudy follows the development of indicating and recording thermometers until recent times, emphasizing meteorological applications. ... Read more

Product Description
This book has been designed for use both as a text for students of the atmospheric sciences and as an up-to-date sourcebook for researchers in allied fields who need guidance into particular topics. As a text, the book is suitable for advanced undergraduates and first-year graduate students, and each of its ten chapters concludes with a short problem set. As a sourcebook, the largely self-contained topical chapters introduce basic concepts and provide bibliographic pathways through the current literature for professionals in such fields as remote sensing of the atmosphere by earth satellite monitoring, solar energy, and acid rain.Four chapters cover the atmospheric aerosol and cloud physics, and four cover the processes of radiative transfer. Extended treatment is given to these two broad groups of phenomena because they directly affect the structure and motions of the atmosphere. In addition, there is a chapter on optical phenomena in the atmosphere (including refraction, mirages, the rainbow, the glory, the corona, the heiligenschein) and one on atmospheric electricity (covering the electrical structure of the fair weather atmosphere, the several proposed theories of thunderstorm charging and a discussion of the lightning stroke).Henry Houghton, a past president of the American Meteorological Society and long-time head of the MIT meteorology department, is universally recognized as one of the leading authorities on the subject of physical meteorology. His book is the culmination of more than 30 years of research and teaching at MIT, where he is now professor emeritus. ... Read more

Product Description
Bringing together leading researchers, this volume surveys recent developments in the fields of atmospheric turbulence and mesoscale meteorology, with particular emphasis on the areas pioneered by Douglas K. Lilly. Numerical simulation is an increasingly important tool for improving our understanding of a wide range of atmospheric phenomena. The first part of this book looks at the development of theoretical and computational analyses of atmospheric turbulent flows, and reviews current research advances in this area. Chapters in the second part look at various aspects of mesoscale weather phenomena: from the numerical forecasting of individual thunderstorms to understanding how mountains affect local weather and climate. Researchers and graduate students will find the book to be an excellent resource summarizing the development of techniques as well as current and future work in the fields of atmospheric turbulence and mesoscale meteorology. ...
