5-0 out of 5 stars Severe and Hazardous Weather
I looked everywhere for just the active learning exercises and this was the cheapest one out there from the few that I could find.It arrived on time and in perfect condition.I couldn't be more satisfied.

4-0 out of 5 stars SEVERE AND HAZARDOUS WEATHER: AN INTRODUCTION TO HIGH IMPACT METEOROLOGY: ACTIVE LEARNING EXERCISES
Purchase was great no real flaws in the transaction. It is best to have found the bar code numbers for the book before placing the order if you are purchasing as a class requirement. It ius very easy to purchase the worng edition of the book.

1-0 out of 5 stars Doesn't say what edition!
I purchased this book without realizing I was buying the second edition which is no longer used in any of the colleges or universities I attend. The third edition is the only one in circulation and this company cleverly refrains from labeling which edition they are using. Although I am guilty of ignorantly ordering this book without checking on the edition... I give them a low rating because it took at least a week and a half to get the book, and they are are guilty of being shady with regards to how they advertise their book... even going so far as to not show the cover of the book. ... Product Description
This new, comprehensive textbook for upper-division undergraduate and graduate students of meteorology presents for the first time information that is now considered essential in modern weather forecasting. Based on a successful series of courses taught by the author at the University of Oklahoma, the text carefully examines the foundations of synoptic meteorology, from the analysis of scalar fields to atmospheric kinematics, dynamics, and thermodynamics. Newer topics such as Q-vectors, and modern observing systems such as Doppler radar are discussed, and several detailed figures and many helpful problems are included. This timely work emphasizes both physical understanding and mathematical analysis, and clearly explains observations in light of current theory. It will be a valuable reference for weather forecasters and researchers as well as students. ... Read more

5-0 out of 5 stars Great reference, good price
This book (and the Vol. II) is a good reference for meteorological basis on phisics and atmospheric sciences itself, I already had thought about buying it here in Brasil (country that I live) but they would cost me about 120 bucks each volume, since on amazon it ended up for about 60 each delivered in my house (ok, It took 4 weeks, but it's a long way for a legless book!!) and, like all my products so far, they arrived in perfect shape.

I've been using those from the library for 3 semesters now, on atmos. dynamics I, Synoptic meteor., micrometeorology and other courses... I'm shure it will be used much more in the future.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Reference Text
This is the 1st of 2 books written by Dr. Bluestein to teach synoptic and dynamic meteorology to undergraduate college students. Unlike other textbooks, this textbook takes the time to show alot more of the steps in the derivation of equations used in meteorology. Of course this has added to the size of the book but the fact that the author has taken the care to include this in his book is quite helpful for those learning meteorology. It is a useful reference book. ... Read more

4-0 out of 5 stars Meteorology DeMystified
This book is so cool.Things that I always wanted to know and not take a specific class for Meteorology.

1-0 out of 5 stars A Washout
The purpose of this book is to demystify weather. But while the book begins with a promising use of physical equations, these serve only to pad the book with test questions that are not further applied in the text to demystify (i.e., explain in causal terms) why things happen in the atmosphere. For example, there is no explanation of the Coriolis effect, and thus the wind patterns presented early on make no sense at all. There is a great deal of talk about what to do in the event of a thunderstorm, a hurricane, a tornado, and so on, but this information is readily available from any disaster center and elsewhere on the web.I came away from this book more mystified than when I opened it.A tempestuous disappointment. ... Product Description

Part of the excitement in boundary-layer meteorology is the challenge associated with turbulent flow - one of the unsolved problems in classical physics. An additional attraction of the filed is the rich diversity of topics and research methods that are collected under the umbrella-term of boundary-layer meteorology. The flavor of the challenges and the excitement associated with the study of the atmospheric boundary layer are captured in this textbook. Fundamental concepts and mathematics are presented prior to their use, physical interpretations of the terms in equations are given, sample data are shown, examples are solved, and exercises are included.

The work should also be considered as a major reference and as a review of the literature, since it includes tables of parameterizatlons, procedures, filed experiments, useful constants, and graphs of various phenomena under a variety of conditions. It is assumed that the work will be used at the beginning graduate level for students with an undergraduate background in meteorology, but the author envisions, and has catered for, a heterogeneity in the background and experience of his readers.

5-0 out of 5 stars A Classic
Stull's Introduction to Boundary Layer Meteorology is a classic text that remains as valuable today as 20 years ago when it was first published. It is by far the most comprehensive and accessible text of it kind. Whether you are interested in the underlying physics of boundary layer processes, measurement techniques, or analysis methods, this book is indispensable. It should be on the shelf of every graduate student seeking to understand boundary layer processes and in the reference library of every scientist whose work touches an atmospheric processes near the ground.

1-0 out of 5 stars Lost is transit?
I understand things get lost in the mail. What I don't understand is why this seller doesn't have the shipping number so that I can track my package or give me updates on when it has been shipped.Giving me a two week window with the final possible arrival date 3 and a half weeks after my purchase was made without any kind of updates of any kind is not acceptable.I got a full refund and they were helpful but they need to fix the way the inform the buyer.

5-0 out of 5 stars For advanced students
Very comprehensive book, cover all the important topics in Boundary Layer phenomena's: friction - turbulence - stability -fluxes- advection of atmospherics' variablesetc' . It is suitable for a student who has already some familiarity with Physics and Calculus (including several variables, vector calculus and partial derivative) I think its excellent book in a fair price.

5-0 out of 5 stars A hammer!
R. Stull makes a comprehensive and profound review of the boundary layer meteorology in his book.I consider this book to be a most useful tool for any scientist concerned with the troposphere, for all environmentalengineers having to do with air quality, and for all micrometeorologists. Just like a hammer! One of the first to get for one's library.Itcontains the general descriptions of the usual subjects, thoroughly andwell explained. Then it also contains extensive descriptions of differentmodels used to make calculations. This is why I am willing to pay its...unfortunately not-very-low price. ... Read more

Winning entry, Professional Cover/Jacket Category, in the 2009 New England Book Show sponsored by Bookbuilders of Boston. and Winner, History Category, 2008 ASLI's Choice Award given by the Atmospheric Science Librarians International.

For much of the first half of the twentieth century, meteorology was more art than science, dependent on an individual forecaster's lifetime of local experience. In Weather by the Numbers, Kristine Harper tells the story of the transformation of meteorology from a "guessing science" into a sophisticated scientific discipline based on physics and mathematics. What made this possible was the development of the electronic digital computer; earlier attempts at numerical weather prediction had foundered on the human inability to solve nonlinear equations quickly enough for timely forecasting. After World War II, the combination of an expanded observation network developed for military purposes, newly trained meteorologists, savvy about math and physics, and the nascent digital computer created a new way of approaching atmospheric theory and weather forecasting.

Harper examines the efforts of meteorologists to professionalize their discipline during the interwar years and the rapid expansion of personnel and observational assets during World War II. She describes how, by the 1950s, academic, Weather Bureau, and military meteorologists had moved atmospheric modeling from research subject to operational forecasting. Challenging previous accounts that give sole credit for the development of numerical weather prediction to digital computer inventor John von Neumann, Harper points to the crucial contributions of Carl-Gustav Rossby (founder of MIT's meteorology program and a member of the "Scandinavian Tag Team" working with von Neumann). This transformation of a discipline, Harper writes, was the most important intellectual achievement of twentieth-century meteorology, and paved the way for the growth of computer-assisted modeling in all the sciences. ... Product Description
An entirely new way for students to observe, analyze, and understand meteorology, - Steven A. Ackerman and John A. Knox's METEOROLOGY: UNDERSTANDING THE ATMOSPHERE is scientific, topical, and scholarly. The authors use vivid photographs and compelling real-life stories to present the subject of weather as it directly affects your students. METEOROLOGY generates genuine enthusiasm for the subject by using conceptual models and engaging narrative to truly make weather phenomena come alive.METEOROLOGY emphasizes how we observe the atmosphere and then uses those observations to explain atmospheric phenomena. New "Observational Questions" further extend this emphasis by asking students to analyze photographs, data, or their own experiences. By learning how to interpret scientific observations of the atmosphere, students can deepen their understanding of the subject. The second edition offers complete integration with MeteorologyNow?, the first assessment-driven and student-centered online learning solution created specifically for this course. MeteorologyNow? uses a series of chapter-specific diagnostic tests to build a personalized learning plan for each student, allowing students to focus their study time on specific areas of weaknesses. Each personalized learning plan directs students to specific text sections as well as to a set of over three dozen Java applets designed to augment their understanding. These acclaimed applets, designed by Tom Whittaker and co-author Steven Ackerman, are divided into two types, "Observational Learning" applets deal with interpreting satellite imagery and "Atmospheric Explorations" extend the book's treatment of key topics, such as weather map analysis and numerical weather models. ... Meteorology 2e, is an introduction to atmospheric science for science and non-science majors. The text covers all topics expected of an introductory text, organized and presented in a way that offers the instructor considerable flexibility of sequence.

The authors feel this text is distinctive in three major ways. First is its clear, accurate and friendly style of presentation. Second is the considerable attention given to the process of meteorological inquiry, the thoughts and actions of practicing meteorologists in finding out how the atmosphere behaves. Third is the careful attention to pedagogy. By grouping chapters into units, developing concepts from specific examples to general principles (and not the other way around), engaging the reader in questions, repeating explanations from earlier chapters when a reminder would be helpful, pausing for review several times within each chapter, and in many other ways, the Authors have strived to make the text a powerful learning tool, thereby helping the reader to become an active and successful learner. ... 4-0 out of 5 stars A Excellent, Updated View of Meteorology
This book is really much more than simply a discussion of mountain weather. This book introduces the layperson and professional alike to the complex interaction between terrain and the atmosphere, both on the global and regional scale. In a clean well written manner, with lots of informative graphics, Whiteman goes beyond many of the simplistic coffeetable books, but never leaves understanding and clarity behind.

This book goes a long way to introduce the public to a New Meteorology - one in which airflow is understood not to behave like water, but a new realization that even a simple breeze around a hill can exhibit complex eddys, counterflows, and dynamic reactions to the surface.

This work demonstrates the value of a Meteorology that combines a new geophysical understanding with real world applications in firefighting, pest control, environmental preservation, land management, and I dare say, field geology.

5-0 out of 5 stars Very Useful Reference
This book is well written. It is a useful reference for those who forecast for mountainous locations. The book is organized in small, discrete sections without lots of unneeded derivations. Lots of useful graphics and illustrations make this one of the most used books on my shelf. It is also quite useful for teaching others how weather is modified by terrain.

(Usually, no one is around when I burst out in this glee :)).I find one major disconnect though.I am a middle aged person who just enjoys learning new things, keeping my mind active and find weather watching a valuable diversion from my regular occupation.I bought the book to learn.I am interested in the story problems to solidify and confirm my understanding of the material. But, there is no answer key in the book to the problems.I checked some of the web based locations in an attempt to find an answer key, but to no avail.I will keep looking. There is an obvious attempt to make the text light and interesting using dry humor geared to people under about 25 years old. It is easily glossed over by the older, objective thinking reader however, and the science is substantive. I would recommend the book, but I sure want to find the answer key. ... Read more

Product Description

From low humor to high drama, TV weather reporting has encompassed an enormous range of styles and approaches, triggering chuckles, infuriating the masses, and at times even saving lives. In Weather on the Air, meteorologist and science journalist Robert Henson covers it all—the people, technology, science, and show business that combine to deliver the weather to the public each day.

The first comprehensive history of its kind, Weather on the Air explores the many forces that have shaped weather broadcasts over the years, including the long-term drive to professionalize weathercasting, the complex relations between government and private forecasters, and the effects of climate-change science and the Internet on today’s broadcasts. Dozens of photos and anecdotes accompany Henson’s more than two decades of research to document the evolution of weathercasts, from their primitive beginnings on the radio to the high-gloss, graphics-laden segments we watch on television every morning.

This engaging study will be an invaluable tool for students of broadcast meteorology and mass communication and an entertaining read for anyone fascinated by the public face of weather.

Product Description
During the course of this century, meteorology has become unified, physics-based, and highly computational. Calculating the Weather: Meteorology in the 20th Century explains this transformation by examining thevarious roles of computation throughout the history of meteorology, giving most attention to the period from World War I to the 1960s. The electronic digital computer, a product of World War II, led to great advances in empirical, theoretical, and practical meteorology. At the same time, the use of the computer led to the discovery of so-called"chaotic systems,"and to the recognition that there may well be fundamental limits to predicting the weather.
One of the very few books covering 20th century meteorology, this text is an excellent supplement to any course in general meteorology, forecasting, or history of science.

Key Features
* Provides a narrative account of the growth of meteorology in the 20th century
* Explains how forecasting the weather became a physics-based science
* Studies the impact of the computer on meteorology and thus provides an example of science transformed by the computer
* Describes three traditions in meteorology:
* The empirical tradition of gathering data and making inferences
* A theoretical tradition of explaining atmospheric motions by means of the laws of physics
* The practical tradition of predicting the weather
* Analyzes the increasing role of calculation within each of the traditions and explains how electronic digital computers made possible many connections between traditions ... Read more
