Product Description
The monograph introduces the reader to the world of inductive well logging - an established method for surveying the electrical conductivity of rocks surrounding a borehole. The emphasis is on developing a theory of inductive logging and on understanding logging tools basic physics, since this theory and understanding furnish valuable insights for inventing practical induction logging techniques.

The first chapter of the book presents the basic laws of electromagnetism from a point of view that will facilitate the application of the theory to problems in electromagnetic logging. Many topics that play an important role in the design and interpretation of tools readings are covered. The vertical resolution and radial depth of investigation of different induction tools is systematically considered. Special attention is paid to principles of induction logging with transversal induction coils, to transient method of induction logging in media with cylindrical and horizontal interfaces and to the influence of anisotropy on the electromagnetic field measured in a conducting medium. Multi-coil differential induction probes and induction logging based on measuring the inphase component of the secondary field or the quadrature component difference are also described in detail. The last chapter is devoted to mathematical modeling of the response of induction logging tools in 3D geometries. The theory of inductive logging presented in this volume can be applied to logging after drilling as well as logging while drilling.

The lithosphere is the outer solid part of the earth, including the crust and uppermost mantle. The lithosphere is about 100 km thick, although its thickness is age dependent (older lithosphere is thicker). The lithosphere below the crust is brittle enough at some locations to produce earthquakes by faulting, such as within a subducted oceanic plate. This book presents leading research in the field from around the globe. ... Read more

Product Description
Manganese mineralization is diverse in occurrence, origin, mineralogy and geochemistry. These variations reflect differences in the processes of formation and depositional environments, which in turn are a response to changes in the land - ocean - atmosphere system over geological time. As such, manganese deposits can act as markers of major events in the dynamic evolution of the Earth's surface. Modern manganese accumulations provide insights into key factors controlling manganese deposition that cannot readily be determined from examination of ancient ores. A knowledge of oceanic currents, ocean chemistry or small-scale variation in physicochemcal patterns of recent basins, for example, may extend our understanding of depositional processes in the past. Equally, the study of Precambrian deposits not only elucidates ancient mechanisms of manganese metallogenesis, but also helps to unravel the impact of comprehensive environmental changes on metal deposition on a scale not realised in younger geological times. The volume includes a review of the range of terrestrial Mn deposits and their relative abundance through geological time. This is followed by six papers on Precambrian deposits that cover the manner in which Mn mineralization reflects changes in planetary and environmentalchemistry. Ten papers on Cenozoic deposits show the wide diversity of genetic types of the younger deposits, from nodules, crusts and stratabound layers, todeposits precipitated from hydrothermal fluids. Five papers in the last section consider the geochemistry and mineralogy of Mn deposits. Experimental and modelling approaches to Mn geochemistry and mineralogy can further aid our understanding of the formational and depositional processes involved and thereby ourinterpretation of deposit metallogenesis.

Editorial Review

Product Description
This book represents the first attempt to coordinate the substantial database on biological markers which organic geochemists have accumulated, thus providing a comprehensive reference base. This monograph is arranged in chapters which are complete in themselves and exemplify both the range of molecules which can be encompassed as biological markers, and the varied environments in which they have been found. The chapters cover not only the question of which organic molecules qualify as biological markers, but discuss degradative pathways which when recognized and understood can extend the marker concept, and also say something specifically about environments of deposition. Some molecules currently identified as geolipids are not yet firmly related to their likely biological source. Here is the moving boundary of knowledge and the monograph carries the reader to this frontier and points the way forward where this can be done. Although petroleum exploration laboratories have developed their own databases over the years, this book is one of the first works of reference on the application of the technique to exploration data. ... Product Description
The last 15 years has seen the development of a number ofinnovative process concepts, such as fluid-bed pyrolysis andhydroretorting which have enabled considerably higher oil yields to beobtained than by simple retorting. To understand these phenomena, detailed structural information is clearly required on the organicmatter present in shales. Indeed, the organic geochemistry andanalytical chemistry communities have made considerable strides in theapplication of advanced analytical methods to assess the structure andbiological origins of kerogens. Therefore, it has been timely to bringtogether leading scientists from the analytical/geochemistry andchemical engineering communities involved in fossil fuel researchthrough a NATO-ASI to prepare a comprehensive, up-to-date coverage ofoil shale composition, geochemistry and conversion. The book comprisesover 20 review articles, together with a number of researchcontributions. It is intended for both research workers entering thefield and academics/industrialists to keep abreast of developments insolid fuel research. ... Read more

Product Description
Significant achievements have been made at the cross-roads of physics and planetary science. In the second half of the twentieth century, the discipline of planetary sciences has witnessed three major episodes which have revolutionized its approach and content: (i) the plate-tectonic theory, (ii) human landing and discoveries in planetary astronomy and (iii) the extraordinary technical advancement in high P-T studies, which have been abetted by a vast improvement in computational methods. Using these new computational methods, such as first principles including ab initio models, calculations have been made for the electronic structure, bonding, thermal EOS, elasticity, melting, thermal conductivity and diffusivity.

In this monograph, the boundaries of the definitions of a petrologist, geochemist, geophysicist or a mineralogist have been willfully eliminated to bring them all under the spectrum of "high-pressure geochemistry" when they deal with any material (quintessentially a chemical assemblage) - terrestrial or extraterrestrial - under the conditions of high-pressure and temperature. Thus, a petrologist using a spectrometer or any instrument for high-pressure studies of a rock or a mineral, or a geochemist using them for chemical synthesis and characterization, is better categorized as a "high-pressure geochemist" rather than any other kind of disciplinarian.

The contents of this monograph bring together, under one cover, apparently disparate disciplines like solid-earth geophysics and geochemistry as well as material science and condensed-matter physics to present a thorough overview of high pressure geochemistry. Indeed, such interdisciplinary activities led to the discovery of new phenomena such as high P-T behaviour in metal oxides (e.g. Mott transition), novel transitions such as amorphization, changes in order-disorder in crystals and the anomalous properties of oxide melts. ... Product Description
This book describes the structure-property-composition relationships for silicate glasses and melts of industrial and geological interest. From Antiquity to the 20th century, an introductory chapter presents this subject in a historical perspective. Basic concepts are then discussed in three chapters where attention is paid to the glass transition and its various consequences on melt and glass properties, to the structural and physical differences between amorphous and crystalline silicates, and to the mutual relationships between local order, energetics and physical properties.

With pure SiO2 as a starting point, compositions of increasing chemical complexity are successively dealt with in a dozen chapters. The effects of network-modifying cations on structure and properties are first exemplified by alkali and alkaline earth elements. The specific influence of aluminum, iron, titanium, and phosphorus are then reviewed. With water, volatiles in the system COHS, noble gases, and halogens, the effects of volatile components are also described. The last chapter explains how the results obtained on simpler melts can be applied to chemically complex systems. In each chapter, physical and chemical properties are described first and followed by a review of glass and melt structure. When possible, pressure effects are also considered.

*From SiO2 to complex silicate compositions, the physical and chemical properties of melts and glasses of geological and industrial interest
*Structural characterization of melts and glasses, from ambient to high pressure and temperature
*From basic concepts to an advanced level, a consistent description of the structure-property-composition relationships in glasses and melts ... Read more

The application of surface geochemical methods to findingpetroleum is based on the detection of hydrocarbons in the soil thathaveleaked from a petroleum reservoir at depth. While the seal overthedeposit was once considered impermeable, surface geochemistrydatanow show that such leakage is a common occurrence. Despite itssimplicity and low costs, surface geochemistry remains controversialbecause, until now, there was no objective and in-depth treatment ofthe various methods of surface geochemistry for oil exploration.Written by a successful oil finder, this practical guide: * surveys abroad array of surface geochemistry techniques, from soil gases tomicrobiology, and provides clear strategies for applying them to thehigh-stakes art of petroleum exploration * offers numerous casestudies, both successes and failures, to show the strengths andweaknesses of different approaches * examines statistical and spatialvariation, surveys and models in surface geochemistry, demonstratinghow each analytical tool can be used to optimize accuracy *integrates surface geochemistry data interpretation with data fromconventional methods of oil exploration, and considers the economicsof surface geochemical approaches * discusses key topics that havebeen neglected in the literature, such as grid design and the effectsof soils. Geologists, geophysicists, geological engineers andexploration managers involved in petroleum exploration will gainvaluable insights from this volume. By presenting and evaluating eachmethod of surface geochemistry in a neutral tone, this book enablesthe reader to select and employ these methods with greaterconfidence. ... Read more
