Table of contents While the Antarctic is uninhabited, the Arctic has 3.75 million permanent residents, according to the Arctic Council. Most settlements have remained modest in size, with populations of less than 5 000 people. The vast majority of Arctic residents today are nonindigenous immigrants. This shift in demographic make-up has been accompanied by a steady increase in urbanization, with migration from smaller settlements to larger urban settings, a general trend throughout the Arctic (see box). Urban growth in the Arctic Greenland has experienced urban growth since the 1970s (Rasmussen and Hamilton 2001). Roughly one-quarter of Greenlands population lives in Nuuk, the capital. This concentration of the urban population in one city is found in other Arctic countries: 40 per cent of Icelands growing population lives in Reykjavik, onethird of the Faroe Islands people lives in Torshavn, and almost 40 per cent of the population of Canadas Northwest Territories lives in Yellowknife. Anchorage in Alaska is the only North American Arctic city with a population of more than 100 000. The rapidly growing population of Anchorage reached 262 200 in 2001, while the population of the next largest city of Arctic Alaska, Fairbanks, declined slightly over the past decade to 30 500.
Education | David Wynn-Williams for polar regions, and his deep appreciation of the Antarctic environment, were firmlyestablished during his time on Signy Island. New research opportunities http://education.guardian.co.uk/Print/0,3858,4393975,00.html
Extractions: The Guardian The polar microbiologist, David "Wynn" Wynn-Williams, who has died aged 55 in a traffic accident while jogging near his home in Cambridgeshire, was a man who cared passionately about his science and the Antarctic environment. In recent years, he had broadened his enthusiasms, from studies of life at polar limits to considerations of life on other planets in the fledgling field of astrobiology. Born in West Kirby, on the Wirral peninsula, he attended Calday Grange grammar school and Birkenhead technical college, before moving to the University College of Wales, Aberstwyth, to read botany and microbiology for his first degree, and marine microbiology for his PhD. Aberstwyth was an obvious choice for David, with his Welsh ancestry and love of all things Welsh. His father had imbued him with a love of rugby and male voice choirs and, while his rugby career was shortlived, his passion for choral singing - in a very capable bass voice - brought memorable experiences, including involvement in the choir at the investiture of the Prince of Wales, and acting as the narrator to a performance of Vaughn-Williams' Antarctic Symphony in Cambridge some 30 years later. His research on the ecology of nitrogen-fixing marine bacteria provided the first evidence of his abilities to operate under exacting conditions and to improvise equipment and techniques. His enthusiasm made him a natural choice to lead a research expedition to Iceland in 1970, an ideal lead into his subsequent Antarctic work.

Otto Sverdrup Expedition - Education Program was first and foremost a polar science mission Places Fund, with a mandate for wildernesseducation. G. Albert, US Army Cold regions research and Engineering http://www.sverdrup2000.org/science.htm
Extractions: POLAR SCIENCE Next to the education program, the Sverdrup 2000 team's greatest priority is its scientific research goals. Te team's full year in the remote arctic and the expertise of its Norhwegian scientist members will enable us to do important work, to contribute to knowledge of the arctic, and to share these vital interests with scientists, students, and the general public in the circumpolar world. The arctic deserves particular study because: Some of the world's largest remaining wilderness areas are found in the arctic; preservation is critical. Arctic ecosystems are more vulnerable than others to loss of habitat, environmental degradation, and climate change.

Polar News Note research conducted in these regions closer to success stories in NSFsupported polarresearch has been country displayed research and education projects funded http://www.agiweb.org/legis105/cnsfnote.html
Extractions: The following report appears as a News Note in the July 1998 issue of Geotimes. It is reprinted here with permission. The polar regions of our planet may not be the most hospitable places with average temperatures in the sixties (below zero, that is!), but their very remoteness and the chemical record of past climates contained within long-lived glaciers provide scientists with tremendous insights into the rest of the planet. Several recent outreach events have sought to bring the scientific research conducted in these regions closer to home for the public and policymakers alike. Polar research was the theme for National Science and Technology Week and was featured in a congressional exhibition of research funded by the National Science Foundation (NSF). Because the geosciences play a major role in polar research, these events also provide a showcase for the valuable contributions that earth scientists are making to our understanding of past and present climates. National Science and Technology Week The fourteenth annual National Science and Technology Week (NSTW), an NSF-sponsored public outreach effort, was held April 26 - May 2, 1998. According to NSF Director Neal Lane, this year's theme
