Extractions: The Graduate University for Advanced Studies was founded in 1988 as a new system of postgraduate education in Japan. The University offers a three-year Ph. D. (doctoral) course. Research and education in the University depend upon close cooperation with the inter-university research institutes (parent institutes). The Department of Polar Science consists of two chairs grouped as polar atmosphere science and polar hydrosphere and lithosphere science. Polar science requires interdiscipli-nary approaches taken from the sciences that include upper atmosphere physics, meteorology, glaciology, oceanography, geochemistry, geology, geomorphology, solid earth geo-physics, meteoritics, biology and polar regions engineering. The Department of Polar Science aims to educate students and to conduct research on physical, chemical, biological and geological processes and interactions in both the Arctic and Antarctic regions. These scientific investigations are associ-ated with studies of the magnetosphere, atmosphere, hydrosphere, cryosphere, lithosphere and biosphere in a global context.

Extractions: What is funded? Funding is provided for scientific research in polar regions. The individual research topics are defined in the "Polar Research Programme" of the Federal Government. For the first time, this programme includes both polar regions. Who is funded? Enterprises of trade and industry, higher education institutions and non-university research institutions are eligible for funding. What form does support take? Support usually takes the form of non-repayable grants. In the case of company applications, own contributions of at least 50% are the rule. Additional forms of support are loans, participations or services. (For exact stipulations cf. funding activities) Applications for funding Applications for funding must be submitted in written form and according to requirements. Application procedure: The electronic application system easy faciliates application for project funding by making available electronic application forms and the information required including regulations, instructions and auxiliary terms and conditions.

After an initial period as a teacher, he qualified in librarianship, working as an information specialist at Bristol Polytechnic and Aston University before being appointed to his present post in 1989. The Institute's Library is the world's largest for the polar regions. Its aim is to hold copies of every book in every language and on every subject written about Antarctica or the Arctic. The holdings of the famous Archives are particularly strong for the 'Heroic Era' expeditions of Robert Falcon Scott and Sir Ernest Shackleton and their contemporaries, and for the nineteenth-century British naval voyages in search of the Northwest Passage culminating in the loss of Sir John Franklin. The Librarian and Keeper of Collections' chief duty is to administer, sustain, and develop these facilities. Insofar as these duties allow time for research and writing, his interests focus on the history of exploration. He is shortly to complete

With the explosion of the Internet, however, this has become a virtually impossible undertaking. Therefore, we decided that the most effective way to provide Arctic Resources would be to link you to sites featuring good collections of Arctic-related links and databases. 'Arctic Roadmap' is still available if you are looking for some resources that were listed there. This is a research and development project aimed at understanding how teachers incorporate details of scientific research into secondary science curricula. Visitors to this site are invited to send comments, suggestions, etc. via e-mail @ Larry Bencze DIRECTORY Project Description Back to my HomePage Project Description The "Arctic Science in School Science" project is an action research project in which a group of teachers collaborated in developing educational experiences for students to help them understand the nature of scientific and technological research and development occuring in Earth's arctic regions. The project involved time spent with scientists and technologists conducting research and development projects at a northern alpine field ecology research station. The project had two general aims: i) to develop curriculum materials for secondary school science programmes and ii) to study collaborative curriculum development amongst the teachers involved in this project. To date, considerable amounts of ethnographic data have been collected about the field ecology. A Web site about this has been partially developed. However, the project is currently 'on-hold,' awaiting further funding and development. Back Arctic WWW Links

Registered as a charitable organization, ACUNS is a voluntary association of thirty-five Canadian universities and northern colleges with northern programs and interests. Programs vary widely in scope and size, from full-fledged northern centres and institutes to informal groups of scholars with interests in the polar regions. The Association was established because of the need to link these scholars with each other, with northern communities, with governments, and with national and international agencies concerned with northern science and development through education, professional and scientific training, and research. Extractions: Center of Excellence for Marine Sciences The Monterey Bay has long attracted marine biologists, oceanographers and other people who are interested in or concerned about the productive and beautiful area known as the Monterey Bay and the ocean in general. The biological richness and diversity of the Bay, its proximity to major oceanic circulation features, the seasonal variations in air circulation and current patterns and its dramatically contoured floor make this area ideal for research and monitoring ocean organisms and processes. Numerous agencies have located or are in the process of relocating around the bay. These agencies range from the Monterey Bay Aquarium and the Long Marine Laboratory at UC/Santa Cruz to our own Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center and Naval Research Laboratory which are key research and production centers in the international community. Collectively, these laboratories and research centers constitute perhaps the greatest concentration of marine scientist per mile of shoreline of any place in the world. This area has come to be known as a Center of Excellence for Marine Sciences. Following is a non-inclusive listing of the agencies surrounding the Monterey Bay that constitute the Center of Excellence: Fleet Numerical Meteorology and Oceanography Center - DoD's primary real-time numerical prediction center for regional and global oceanographic and meteorological models and applied products.
