Study areas are generallylocal or in nearby hydrologic basins, and problems range from locations and extentof groundwater recharge to sources of chloride in brines. Students learn techniques of sampling and analysis of waters for tritium, radiocarbon and stable isotopes, andtheir interpretation. Recent studies have revealed sites of recharge in the Tucson Basin, and extent of migration of 1960's precipitation in local aquifers. Continuing studies detail the sources of chloride and sulfur in groundwater systems, the origin and evolution of chloride in sedimentary basins, and past solar activity inferred from high-precisionradiocarbon measurements in tree rings. Service analyses for internal and external users include radiocarbon dating, measurement of natural levels of tritium in water, stable isotope analyses of water,carbonates, brines, chloride minerals, sulfide and sulfate minerals.

Extractions: ISOTOPE GEOCHEMISTRY LABORATORY OVERVIEW The Isotope Geochemistry Laboratory (IGL) is part of the Geochemistry Laboratories of the Department of Geology. The IGL comprises a set of laboratories for the preparation and isotopic analysis of a wide range of geological and biological materials. These laboratories include separate Mass Spectrometry (2), Chemistry (2), Mineral Separation and Rock Preparation facilities. The IGL began operations in 1991 with the acquisition of a NBS-design single-collector solid source mass spectrometer. In 1992, a Sector 54 mass spectrometer with 7 faraday collectors, was added to the complement of analytical tools. A second mass spectrometry laboratory, shared with the Plasma Laboratory houses a Nu Plasma multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer, added in 2001. The mission of the IGL is to produce the highest quality isotope data, to teach students and visitors the techniques involved in gathering such data, and to maintain itself as a world-class isotope measurement facility. FACILITIES The Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry Laboratory of the IGL currently houses two solid source mass spectrometers, filament degassing apparatus, DOS-based microcomputers, and laminar flow benches for sample loading. Both mass spectrometers have dedicated positive and negative ion collimators.

Specifications: Czerny-Turner monochromator (0.75m); vacuum operation for emission lines in the U.V.; resolution 0.006 -0.018 nm; high grating order efficiencies on 1st to 4th order lines; concentric glass nebulizer and quartz torch; The ICP is computer controlled, the software includes: analytical program setup, quality con trol and report writing. The computer is connected to the Departmental LAN for data transfer. The system also includes a Varian SPS-5 autosampler with sequence control from the Liberty 200 (including automatic smart rinse and dilution). Detection limits for most elements are in the ppm - ppb range.

Extractions: Introduction to Our Research Group Our research group focuses on the fate, transport and remediation of dissolved metals, metalloids and nutrients in groundwater. This research includes detailed field investigations, laboratory studies, development of reactive barriers and other passive remedial solutions, and development of mathematical models to predict the complex geochemical behavior of these systems. We have conducted detailed investigations of mine sites, mine-waste disposal facilities, wetlands, on-site sewage disposal systems and other industrial sites. Laboratory studies often focus on reaction mechanisms utilizing batch and column experiments. Mathematical modelling has focused on the development of fully-coupled reactive transport codes that can account for thermodynamic and kinetic controls on chemical reactions between groundwater and the aquifer material. Extractions: Information on picture Geochemists help to solve earth science problems by using the physical and inorganic chemistry of major and trace elements in rocks and minerals and the organic geochemistry of hydrocarbon (coal, oil, gas) deposits. Geochemistry is the application of chemical methodology and theory to earth materials formed in the past or still forming today. There are two broad areas of interest. The first involves high temperature/high pressure geochemistry and is used in the study of the formation of minerals and rocks deep in the crust or in volcanoes. The second is low temperature geochemistry, and organic geochemistry. Here the geoscientist is interested in the behaviour of minerals or elements reacting under conditions near the surface of the earth. Most industrial and government geochemists are involved in the latter. Geochemical exploration methods allow prospecting for buried ore deposits by detecting trace amounts of metals and minerals in water, plant, soil, sediment and rock samples. By analysing quantities at the parts per million or even parts per billion level, geochemists can identify the "finger prints" of certain minerals and rocks carrying valuable metals. This can narrow the field area of detailed exploration and drilling. Glacial activity in Canada over the last two million years has "smudged the prints" making exploration more difficult and challenging to the exploration geochemist. Environmental geochemistry has become a vital skill for determining where man-made or natural distributions of elements can become a hazard in the environment. For example: the detection of mercury in lake or stream ecosystems and in assessing the dispersion of liquid radioactive wastes or toxic hydrocarbons (such as "coal tar") in groundwater. An important new area involves the study of chemical element distributions at the earth's surface, especially in water. This baseline information provides the foundation for environmental and health-related studies.
