A major new work from Pulitzer Prize-winning composer George Crumb will be premiered this weekend in Philadelphia by Orchestra 2001. The work, which comes with the imposing title, ... Unto the Hills/Appalachian Songs of Sadness, Yearning and Innocence for Folk Singer, Percussion Quartet and Amplified Piano , is based on Appalachian folk songs that Crumb heard in his youth.
... Unto the Hills , which is scored for amplified piano and more than 60 percussion instruments (played by four musicians) and singer, includes excerpts from such traditional songs as "All the Pretty Horses," "Ten Thousand Miles" and "Poor Wayfaring Stranger."
