"That he has accomplished so much with a crippling disability is a source of
amazement and admiration for all who come in contact with this remarkable man."
One of the greatest violinists of our era, Itzhak Perlman was born in Tel Aviv, Israel in 1945. The son of a barber, he took to the violin at an early age, receiving his first lessons at the Music Academy of Tel Aviv. A prodigy from the start, he was taken to the United States at the age of thirteen to participate in Ed Sullivan's Caravan of Stars, a traveling musical showcase for gifted children. At the end of this somewhat grueling tour, he decided to stay in America to study, and he was quickly awarded scholarships by the Juilliard School and the American-Israeli Foundation to study with noted pedagogue Ivan Galamian and his assistant, Dorothy DeLay.

Perlman made his formal debut in the spring of 1963 at Carnegie Hall, playing the Wienawski F-sharp minor Concerto with the National Orchestral Association; there happened to be a newspaper strike that week, so no critical notices were recorded. The next year, however, the young violinist entered the prestigious Levintritt Competition in New York (the same contest that helped to launch the careers of Van Cliburn and Pinchas Zukerman) and won first prize. Thereafter, he signed with legendary impresario Sol Hurok, who booked a fifty-city American tour for his rising star.

Arts and Culture A Weekend with Pinchas Zukerman and friends

Pinchas Zukerman, renowned violin and viola virtuoso, is in Muskoka the weekend of October 26 to 28 as part of the very successful Pamela Wallin Cultural weekends at the the Muskoka Sands Resort in Gravenhurst. A Grammy award winning violinist, violist and conductor, Zukerman will be performing two 'autumnal masterpieces' by Mozart and Brahms at the Gravenhurst Opera House. A welcome reception of wine and hors d'oeuvres and live entertainment kicks off the weekend Friday night, part of the all-inclusive package put together by the Sands. Saturday morning includes a gourmet breakfast and a 'Living Well' seminar. The afternoon is spent at the nearby Gravenhurst Opera House, (transportation is provided) taking in the 'semi-private' concert by Zukerman. The Music Director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra since April 1998, Zukerman has made 4 recordings with the orchestra, initiated a Young Artists program, led the orchestra on a highly successful Canada Tour, and in 2000 took them on the first-ever visit of a Canadian orchestra to the Middle East.

    MASTER CLASSES
The mice from the CMJO have come to the masterclass
Pinchas Zukerman masterclass. Sydney, Australia. August 31, 2000: - Renowned violinist/violist Pinchas Zukerman, visiting Australia as part of the 2000 Olympics Arts Festival, presented masterclasses in three cities. Students from around the country auditioned by tape for the chance to participate and four were chosen to perform at each class. In Sydney, the students were all violinists; most were prize winners of local and international competitions with impressive resumes and all were about 18 years old and currently undertaking tertiary training. Of course, violin and viola students and teachers came from near and far to watch, learn and take the rare opportunity to ask questions of the master.
    • The selected students played:
      • 1. Concert fantasy on Bizet's Carmen, op 25 by Pablo de Sarasate
      • 2. Polonaise in D, op 4 by Henryk Wienawski
      • 3. Tzigane by Maurice Ravel
      • 4. Violin concerto no 2 in g minor (first movement) by Sergei Prokofiev
Zukerman opened the class with a sometimes-humourous introduction, explaining to the large audience that although this was a public lesson for advanced students, he would focus on fundamentals of technique, rather than on the music they played because he believes that before one can make music, one must learn to make the sound. None of the students played his or her entire piece; Zukerman listened carefully for about five minutes before interrupting to discuss what he had observed. Here are some of those observations:

During its last two seasons, the Elgin Symphony Orchestra has provided Fox Valley classical musical lovers with the mastery of cellist Yo-Yo Ma and violinist Itzhak Perlman, who both perform with the likes of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, the San Francisco Symphony, the London Symphony Orchestra and now the Elgin Symphony Orchestra. The roundup of musical masters will grow by one when celebrated violinist, violist, conductor and chamber musician Pinchas Zukermanperforms with the Elgin Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Maestro Robert Hanson at 8 p.m. Saturday at the Hemmens Cultural Center in downtown Elgin. This gala performance will include Rossini's famous opera overture from The Barber of Seville and Resphigi's Pines of Rome, and it will highlight Zukerman in Beethoven's Violin Concerto. A champagne reception will be held at 7:30 p.m. prior to the performance. The well-respected Zukerman, who says, "I'm on this Earth to make music. That is all," was first given music lessons by his father. Born in Tel Aviv, he began attending the Tel Aviv Conservatory at age 8 and continued his studies at the Music Academy there. Even before Zukerman reached his teen-aged years, it was prophesied that he would become one of the best violinists of all time. In 1962, Zukerman obtained a scholarship to study at Juilliard in New York, where he mastered his unique talent to win first prize in the Leventritt Competition five years later. This marked the beginning of a prodigious musical career that has earned him 21 Grammy nominations and two Grammy Awards.

The "Master Class" included hook-ups between The University of Georgia (in the Georgia Center's Room H) and Zukerman at C.L.I. (Compression Labs, Inc.) in San Jose, California. Zukerman can be seen as he watches the monitor to observe Stewart's technique. "The possibility of getting a private lesson from a Pinchas Zukerman is virtually nil.... Signatures asterisked (*) at the bottom arrived too late to be delivered to the board. The letter will remain an ongoing project - check back here for additional signatures March 1, 2002 To the Board of Trustees of the WNYC Foundation: We the undersigned strongly believe that classical music must remain a substantial part of the program schedule of WNYC, New York's only public radio station. For 77 years WNYC has been at the center of musical life in New York City. Throughout that time the station's music programming has provided an invaluable and irreplaceable cultural service for New Yorkers. While we understood the necessity of temporarily suspending most classical music programming after September 11, 2001, we believe that classical music should be restored to its prominent place on the schedule. We are committed to helping WNYC achieve this goal.

Webster's Dictionary describes communication as "a process by which information is exchanged between individuals through a common system of symbols, signs, or behavior." If the "individuals" referred to are networked computers, those symbols are the numbers and 1, with the Internet protocol their grammar. The vocabulary for interpersonal exchange is astonishingly more complex, of course, beginning with language and mathematics, but including output from all the senses, and input as subtle as gestures, expressions or their lack, and even presence, such as appearing at an important occasion. In the movie Wait until Dark a blind and innocent Audrey Hepburn ultimately dominates a sighted and evil Alan Arkin through an incredible array of non-sight-based communications, including sensing his terror when she lights matches in a room he has doused with gasoline. Networking always strives to enrich the rules and speed of computers' primitive 0-1 communication to embrace as much human communication as possible, and we're making progress toward that goal. How many of you have revived long-dormant correspondence through the speed and ease of email? Have you included a friend in a special event by sending digital photographs, taken a course on-line, or purchased on the web? And yet we have so far to go. NYSERNet's mission is advancing network technologies to enable ever more sophisticated communication, and extending these tools to the broader community. This newsletter describes technical work underway to advance the network capability itself, as well as the human experiment of a violin lesson between Ottawa and New York, with Internet communication almost putting student and teacher together. It also talks of the human support needed to keep this machine running and available.

No wonder virtuosi of the day (violinist Zoltan Székely for Violin Concerto No.2, violist William Primrose for Viola Concerto, Op. In this RCA Red Seal recording from 1990, Pinchas Zukerman takes on the formidable challenge of performing both works for the unforgiving microphones over a five-day period. The result is a CD that belongs in any serious listener’s collection. It’s clear from both works that Zukerman and Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra conductor, Leonard Slatkin, have similar views as to how these vividly daunting works should be brought to life.
