Zukerman Turns to Face the Music
“When I first started conducting it felt unnatural to have my back to the audience. When you talk to somebody you don’t turn around with your back to them, do you? But there is a tremendous amount that is communicated from the back—you have to learn to speak with it,” says the dark-haired musician.
Pinchas Zukerman faced the audience as a soloist and turned his back to it as a conductor. Either way, it’s all communication to him.
He appears to have learned to speak with his back, since he is as prolific a conductor as he is a concert soloist. On Nov. 2, at 7:30 p.m., when he plays at the Arlington Theater, he’ll take up the bows—one for the violin, one for the viola—and leave his conducting baton behind.
Right now the gregarious Zukerman is in the thick of a 10-month-long concert tour. Having lived the rigors of life as an international concert soloist for nearly half of his 38 years, he must occasionally experience a drop in his characteristic joie de vivre, right? After all, he frequently performs a concert a night for 12 to 14 days in a row.
“Curiously enough, I used to feel that way,” he said. “Like, ‘here goes another concert season.’ But that was before I learned to pace myself.

"The artists on this program, who all are renowned in their own rite, have decided to come together to perform some of the most noted classical music for the chamber repertoire, and it's always a privilege to have Zukerman on your stage for what he can do as an artist." Dedicated to the music of our time, Dawn Upshaw has performed in over 30 premieres since 1993. Her voice captures every nuance of a song, tracing the gamut of emotions with unsurpassed vocal glow, theatrical ingenuity and comic flair. By Stephanie Kendrick
Star-Bulletin Violinist Pinchas Zukerman has a firm idea of how the job of conducting an orchestra should be done. Rule one: "It's important to remember not to get in the way. "Once you start the car it doesn't need you. It just needs you to direct." He's not being a prima donna. As well as performing as a soloist, Zukerman has been a conductor for 30 years and is currently music director of the National Arts Centre Orchestra of Canada. He will be in soloist mode at the Honolulu Symphony's gala opener tonight. He has appeared in Hawaii before, but has never worked with the symphony's music director Sam Wong. Wong is looking forward to the encounter and respects Zukerman's philosophy. "That's absolutely true. I'm of the same way," said Wong. "I'm not a micromanager." Zukerman will play Beethoven's Violin Concerto in D Major, which he praised for its elegance. "It's a very simple piece, but what it does is amazing. It shows Beethoven's genius," Zukerman said.

http://performingarts.net/kalinovsky/
Biography Praised by critics as a “true lyricist… possessing full brilliant sound, powerful captivating rhythm and sweeping virtuosity,” Grigory Kalinovsky made a unique double debut at Carnegie Hall, appearing as a soloist with orchestra in Brahms Violin Concerto on the main stage of Carnegie Hall, and presenting his New York Debut Recital at the Carnegie Recital Hall. Born in St. Petersburg, Russia, Mr. Kalinovsky first appeared as a competition winner, performing with the St. Petersburg Conservatory Symphony Orchestra at the age of thirteen. Shortly after moving to the United States, other competition victories followed, including the Grand Prize at the Bellini International Competition in Italy. As a winner of these competitions, he has been engaged at various venues ranging from recitals and solo appearances with orchestras to educational and outreach programs. In the United States, Mr. Kalinovsky has been featured in recitals in New York, Washington DC, Baltimore, Minneapolis, Nashville and Boston, as well as performing as a soloist with the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, Yonkers Symphony Orchestra, and Rondo Chamber Orchestra, among others. He has also been heard frequently on radio, including New York’s WQXR classical music station. In recent years, Mr. Kalinovsky has been enjoying numerous recital and concerto engagements in South America. Following a highly successful debut with the Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional in Bolivia, which was nationally televised, the critics noted him as “…a young violinist who will reach the top of a brilliant artistic career.” He has also been repeatedly invited to Israel, where he performed together with Pinchas Zukerman, both in chamber music and concerto performances with the Sinfonietta Orchestra.

D arling of the critics, Pinchas Zukerman has been hailed by the Ottawa Citizen as having " brought energy and excitement to the National Arts Centre. It's no surprise that fans and musicians are cheering the fact he has signed on for at least another four years." (February 12, 2002) Variously acclaimed as " a musician of genius" ( Yediot Acharonot of Tel Aviv), " a veritable musical phenomenon" ( Al Arab Ay Yawm , Amman, Jordan), " a great magician" ( Neue WestfS lische of Bielefeld, Germany), there's no doubt that the flamboyant violinist and conductor stands out in this age of conformity and catering to the lowest common denominator. Zukerman plays his instrument with bewildering ease. As a conductor, his enthusiasm brings out the musical passion of his orchestra members, while he charms audience with his personal charisma and keeps the press on its toes. His high-voltage teaching style demands of his students both technical precision and shimmering sound. And yet this multitalented, consummate professional hasn't let it go to his head. La Scena Musicale talked with him in his office at Ottawa's National Arts Centre, slipping in between an administrative meeting and a rehearsal.

Playing to sell-out audiences Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon, the Madison Symphony Orchestra the players, guest conductor Patrick Flynn, violinist Pinchas Zukerman and cellist Amanda Forsyth displayed satisfying enthusiasm, precision and passion. Glinka's Overture to "Ruslan and Ludmilla" poses few interpretive challenges, but the technical ones are formidable: breakneck tempo and no room for error: the tiniest slip of ensemble would have turned the glitter into glop instantly. The strings simply nailed it, and the wind playing was also superb. Hindemith's Symphonic Metamorphoses on Themes of Carl Maria von Weber (1943) is a masterpiece too seldom heard. It's two handfuls for everybody, especially the conductor, who must balance very thick textures perfectly to maintain intelligibility. Flynn clearly knew the piece cold. Here too the level of the playing was brilliant, with major percussion parts in addition to winds and strings. Not to slight any other part of the orchestra, Hindemith's writing for brass is a marvel shown to particular advantage in these performances.
