Descriptive Summary Creator: MacDonald, Pirie, 1867-1942 Title: Pirie MacDonald Portrait Photograph Collection Dates: [1885]-1942(Bulk 1900-1942) Abstract: The collection consists of 500 portraits of men made in New York City between 1900 and 1942. Dramatic lighting characterizes MacDonald's soft focus head-and-shoulder portraits, which are contact prints from glass negatives. Quantity: 29 linear feet, 25 boxes Identification: PR-039 Biographical Note During his Albany years, MacDonald's work was shown in exhibitions in New York, the Midwest, and Paris, including regular appearances in the annual exhibitions of the Photographers Association of America, of which he was a member. By the end of his life, he had participated in more than forty exhibitions and salons in cities around the United States and in Canada, India, England, Ireland, Belgium, Holland, Germany and France. He was represented in exhibitions at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition (1904) and the Century of Progress Exposition (1933), and served as a juror for six American and international exhibitions between 1906 and 1938. The verso of the mount board of his photographs listed thirty-three medals and awards won for his work.

But there's another question which Requires a different view If you could meet your ancestors Would they be proud of You? THE PALATINATES Each head of family was promised Seventy One and Forty acres of land if they would settle in America, but this promises were not kept. In 1709 three thousand left for New York, one third of whom died on the passage. That fall many were sent to Livingston Manor, now Columbia County, others staying in New York City. In 1711 another importation arrived and the third in 1720. In 1722 and 1723 these Palatinea Germans became very discontented because of the failure of the government to keep its promises, and by invitation of the agents some went to Pennsylvania others went into Schoharie, and the Mohawk Valley; then purchasing their settlements when grants were given by the Crown. While their opportunities for learning were very limited they have always been considered an industrious and law abiding people. They were invaluable to the larger and eastern cities, as they stood on the frontier as a barrier between the thickly settled country and the Indians; and because of their situation, when ever between the years of 1725 and 1782 England would be at war with France, or the Six Nation, or in the war of Independence, these people were the first and suffer they did most severely. In 1711 many of these people then Ulster and Columbia Counties Served in the ill-fated expedition against Canada.
