Isaac Stern, Violinist who led effort to save Carnegie Hall, dies at 81
Story by Willa Reinhard / Sept. 24, 2001 Carnegie Hall ( Michael Wolverton Isaac Stern, the world-renowned violinist who led a successful campaign to save New York’s Carnegie Hall in the 1960s, died on Saturday of heart failure at a Manhattan hospital. He was 81. Admired as one of the great instrumentalists of the 20th century, Stern devoted his life to music, and once said of it, "You need it as you need bread."
"Simply for reasons of sentiment and piety, it would be wanton to destroy it," Stern said at the time. "Think of Tchaikovsky conducting there at the opening! Think of Paderewski and Chaliapin! But there are practical reasons, too, for not destroying it. The young people of this country are demanding more and more music and producing more and more first-rate musicians. How dare we take away from them the music, and the audiences of the future, one of the greatest music rooms of the world?" Recent News Stories

Titanic Disaster Medal by Gerta Ries Wiener (1982), Isaac Stern, Violin virtuoso. Isaac Stern (1920 - 2001) Virtuoso violinist Isaac Stern was born in Kreminiesz, Russia on July 21, 1920. When just a year old, his family emigrated to the United States and settled in San Francisco. Stern took up the violin at the age of eight, and within three years was a soloist with the San Francisco Symphony. Stern's memorable Carnegie Hall debut was made in 1943. In 1960, thanks largely to his efforts, historic Carnegie Hall (opened May 5, 1891) was saved from demolition ... and he continued to serve as its president for over three decades. Isaac Stern has appeared in concerts throughout the world, playing his 1740 Guarneri, and has gained recognition as an unofficial "United States Musical Ambassador." Antonio Stradivari made about 1,100 violins during his lifetime, in the 17th and early 18th centuries, of which about 550 survive. But the instrument preferred by Stern is one of just 150 violins made by Giuseppe Guarneri del Gesu during the same period. Strads are described as sounding sweet and golden, while Guarneriuses are more dusky or earthy and sensuous.

In the summer of 1979, acclaimed violinist Isaac Stern undertook a historic musical tour of China that was documented in the Oscar-winning film FROM MAO TO MOZART: ISAAC STERN IN CHINA. Twenty years later, Stern returned to Beijing to conduct a series of musical encounters, reacquainting himself with the musicians he first met as children. In addition to offering another unique opportunity to perform wonderful music, Stern's follow-up visit allowed him a personal perspective on the many changes that have transpired in China over the past two decades. For the first time, GREAT PERFORMANCES will broadcast the original FROM MAO TO MOZART in its entirety, followed by a new film documenting Stern's recent return and his work coaching gifted Chinese students in major works from the chamber music repertory.

"The best way to learn about another culture," violinist Isaac Stern says, "is to and meet practitioners of one's own profession." And so, in 1979, he undertook a trip to China as an official guest of the government to give concerts, travel the countryside, and "say hello with music." Filmmaker Murray Lerner documented the events of this trip on celluloid, and the resulting movie won the 1981 Academy Award for Best Documentary. The film is now available on DVD in a lavish 20th anniversary edition. Stern is vaguely reminiscent of Burt Lahr, the comedian forever known as the Cowardly Lion in

NEW YORK - Isaac Stern, the master violinist who saved Carnegie Hall from the wrecking ball, died Saturday. He was 81. Stern, one of the last great violinists of his generation, helped advance the careers of a new generation, including Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman and Yo-Yo Ma. He died of heart failure at New York Hospital-Cornell Medical Center, said Ann Diebold, spokeswoman for Carnegie Hall. Five-foot-6, rotund and with pudgy, dimpled hands, Stern commanded a rich tone and steady rhythm from his 18th century Guarneri. With his dynamo energy and fluid bow strokes, he was equally at home with the mathematical contortions of Bach, the fury of Beethoven, the syncopations of Brahms and the convulsions of 20th century composers.

The Associated Press Isaac Stern Mr. Stern was one of the last great violinists of his generation and helped advance the careers of generations of musicians who followed, including Itzhak Perlman, Pinchas Zukerman and Yo-Yo Ma. He died of heart failure at New York Weill Cornell Medical Center, said Ann Diebold, spokeswoman for Carnegie Hall. With his dynamo energy and fluid bow strokes, he was equally at home with the mathematical contortions of Bach, the fury of Beethoven, the syncopations of Brahms and the convulsions of 20th-century composers. Mr. Stern was one of the most-recorded classical musicians in history, making well over 100 recordings. A supporter of Israel, tireless concertizer, teacher and raconteur, Mr. Stern played well over 175 performances by the late 1990s at Carnegie Hall, America's musical temple renown for its acoustics.
