AmazonUK AmazonUS Amazon recommendations The Quartet for the End of Time Messiaen confessed that 'only music made me survive the cruelty and horrors of the camp'. It was there that the premiere took place in January 1941, with the composer at the piano: 'Never has an audience listened to my music with such rapt attention.' The eight movements vary considerably in approach. Two are solos (one for clarinet, the other for piano), while two others are duos (cello and piano, violin and piano). The musical language is sometimes exploratory too, such as when the first movement adopts a polyrhythmic style. All these things make the music a special challenge to the performers, who need to pay particular attention to demands of this complex score. For example the fifth movement, a meditation entitled 'Hymns of Praise on the Eternity of Jesus' must be played 'infinitely slowly' (as the metronome mark confirms), and the style must be 'ecstatic, majestic, meditative and very expressive'. It is clearly no easy task to at once achieve all these demands, and to be frank, these performer's don't quite bring it off. The reason is simply tempo, which is too flowing, not slow enough. Yet the music does still have the ecstatic and expressive qualities Messiaen seeks, and this is not least because it is so well played. But other performances, notably that by Anner Bylsma and Vera Beths (Philips 446 578-2PM) are slower and more rapt.

COMPOSERS Philip Wilby
Philip Wilby
b. Born in Pontefract in 1949, Philip Wilby was educated at Leeds Grammar School and Keble College, Oxford. Wilby attributes the awakening of his interest in composition to Herbert Howells, whose extra-curricular composition classes he attended while a violinist in the National Youth Orchestra of Great Britain. A serious commitment to composition developed during the years at Oxford and, having gained his B Mus in composition in 1971, Wilby continued to write music even while working as a professional violinist (first at Covent Garden and later with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra). He returned to Yorkshire in 1972 and is Principal Lecturer in Composition at the University of Leeds.
In recent years, Wilby has established a very significant reputation in the field of brass band and wind band music. His first commission for brass band - The New Jerusalem (1990) for the National Youth Brass Band - was an instant success and led to further commissions: Paganini Variations (a BBC commission in 1991 for the Grimethorpe Band); Flight for solo flugelhorn and band (Grimethorpe, 1991); Revelation (1995, for the British Open Championships). Much of Wilby's recent wind band music has been commissioned by the Fresno campus of the University of California, where he has had a regular residency since 1985.
Wilby has also given much time to writing for liturgical purposes and works include St Paul's Service (1988) commissioned by St Paul's Cathedral for John Scott and the Choir of St Paul's Cathedral, and The Trinity Service (1992) commissioned by Norwich Cathedral for the 1992 Norwich Festival of Contemporary Church Music.

Wilby has also given much time to writing for liturgical purposes and recent works include St Paul's Service (1988) commissioned by St Paul's Cathedral for John Scott and the Choir of St Paul's Cathedral, and The Trinity Service (1992) commissioned by Norwich Cathedral for the 1992 Norwich Festival of Contemporary Church Music. Other recent projects include a commission (The Cry of Iona) for BBC2's series of music videos for Advent, broadcast in November 1992; Wilby's second symphony Voyaging, commissioned and premiered by the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra in April 1993; Partita, commissioned by Fine Arts Brass Ensemble and premiered in August 1993 at the Harrogate International Festival; An Imagined Fable commissioned by the Athelas Ensemble and premiered in October 1993 at the Danish Radio Concert House; and a Percussion Concerto commissioned by the English Northern Philharmonia and Yorkshire Youth and Music, premiered in November 1993 in Leeds, performed by Chris Bradley and the English Northern Philharmonia conducted by John Price-Jones. In January 1995 Philip Wilby was a featured composer in the PLG Young Artists New Year Series, London.

T HE ORGAN STUDENTS OF ST JOHN'S COLLEGE, 1946 TO DATE If one’s aim in life is to become a cathedral organist, there is no better training than by way of an organ scholarship (or organ studentship, as it is still perversely described in one of the major Cambridge Colleges). It is by being involved daily with choir rehearsals, by coming to grips with a wide repertoire of choral pieces (the St John’s repertoire currently consists of over 1,500 items, and new works continue to be added regularly), and by observing and listening to other choirmasters that one, almost unconsciously, learns the job. It is impossible to ‘teach’ choir training and the sine qua non is the particular type of personality that one happens to be born with or not. It is all-important to be able to imagine and aim for the perfect performance, perfect in technique and with an interpretation which moves the listener by its illumination of the inner meaning of the text. The ability to play the organ to the highest standard is, of course, a prime requisite, but it is a paradox that brilliant young organists are thick on the ground, whereas choir trainers of equal quality are much harder to come by, largely, I suppose, because of a lack of opportunity in their schools to develop those particular skills. Over the years there have been many assistant organists at St John’s, but it was not until 1946 that the College Council decided formally to establish the position of Organ Student. At the Council meeting on 29 November 1946, 'the draft regulations for an Organ Studentship prepared by the Committee appointed on 18 October 1946 were amended and approved', and at the Council meeting on 24 January 1947 it was 'agreed to elect J C Brown Organ Student with tenure during the Lent and Easter terms 1947. He will cease to hold a Choral Studentship.'

Caratex Stamps - Stamps with a Textile theme The Art of Tapestry by Jan M. Cysarz Tapestry is derived from the ancient Greek word "tapes," meaning a carpet, but it more commonly describes a heavy cloth with decorative designs and picture textile interpretation. Tapestries originally were used in churches and palaces, where they were hung on the walls. The old French cities of Arras and Gobelin have become synonymous with the word "tapestry." It was in these two towns that many of the world's most famous tapestries originated in the 14th to the 17th centuries. A 1962 French stamp (SG 1575, Scott 1037) commemorates 300 years of the Gobelin tapestry industry. Arras is mentioned by William Shakespeare in his play Henry IV (Part 1) where Sir John Falstaff tells Prince Hal how he fell asleep behind the "arras" at the Boar's Head Tavern on Eastcheap in the City of London. Also, in Shakespeare's Hamlet, Hamlet drives his dagger through the arras killing Polonius us, who is hiding behind it! The intricate and sophisticated art of the Flemish tapestry weavers in the 15th and 16th centuries was already well developed in other European cities such as Antwerp, Bruges, Lille, Tournai, Valenciennes and Brussels. Subsequently in the 17th century, tapestry weaving reached Mortlake, England. In view of the intrinsic artistic merit of these early tapestries, and also many contemporary tapestries, it is not surprising that numerous postage stamp designers have been inspired to utilise these works of art in miniature on many stamp issues worldwide.

ANCALGON AR 131 [58.47] You certainly cannot judge a book by its cover. Looking at the picture on the cover of this CD, with Lara St. John looking sensually at the camera, pouting, as her clothes seem to be drawn by gravity, one might expect a disc from the latest Britney Spears wannabe. Lara St. John has deliberately crafted this image, however, in order to attract those who might not purchase classical music. In her first three recordings, all self-produced and published, she has show a rare mastery of violin technique, which makes her more than just a pretty face. This third recording was released in April 2002, and, at the same time, an announcement was made that St. John has signed a contract with Sony Music. It turns out that her gamble has paid off - she has made it to the majors through a careful combination of image and musical virtuosity. For she is an excellent violinist, there is no doubt about it. This disc, which contains Bach's three violin concertos, and the first sonata for solo violin, shows that the plays these majestic pieces effortlessly. While her accompaniment remains in the background - making this a soloist's discs rather than an ensemble disc - it serves her well.

Saturday's Toronto Symphony Orchestra concert at Roy Thomson Hall had no special title, but it could have been called The Return of the Natives, for both conductor and soloist were young Canadians now living and working mostly outside the country.
Though violinist Lara St. John is no stranger to Toronto stages, she currently makes New York her home base. (Her brother Scott, having made a more permanent return, now teaches here and will be playing this Friday with Amici at the Glenn Gould Studio.) Conductor Charles Olivieri-Munroe, who made his TSO debut with this concert, now resides in Prague. A decade ago he was a student at U of T.
The program they played was part of the light classics series, but, though that suggests easy-listening, it doesn't mean that the pieces were technically undemanding.
For her part, St. John swept through Sarasate's fiendish Zigeunerweisen like fire through prairie grass, rendering the sinuous sensuality and dancing frenzy of its gypsy moods with equal aplomb. Olivieri-Munroe and the orchestra deftly accompanied her.

    St. John signs Sony deal
By JAMES REANEY London Free Press Courtesy of her new deal with the Sony Classical label, former London violinist Lara St. John is recording with the brother of film superstars Ralph and Joe Fiennes. The exclusive deal with the huge international label was announced yesterday. It puts St. John on the same roster as such classical music stars as Yo-Yo Ma, John Williams and Charlotte Church. "Obviously, it's a massive contract," St. John said from New York. "It's exciting . . . it's (Sony Classical) probably the biggest one out there."
