Violinist Vadim Repin (born Novosibirsk, 1971) follows Maxim Vengerov (born Novosibirsk, 1974) into the Western musical arena with an outstanding coupling of a Prokofiev concerto with Shostakovich's First. (Vengerov's disc, replacing Prokofiev's Second with his First, features him with the LSO under Rostropovich [Teldec 4509-98143-2].) As with Vengerov, Repin knows what he thinks about these scores and his way with the Prokofiev is fascinating. This work owes its popularity to the aria-like theme of its Andante Le pas d'acier eight years earlier). If this is so, the change, for the restatement, to romantically sustained string chords becomes a further step in Prokofiev's "argument" with the forces of musical reductionism in 1930s Russia. Once one starts to listen to the concerto in this way, its enigmatic restlessness becomes less arbitrary. The shadowy, evasive opening movement takes on the tone of the darker episodes in the narrative drama the composer was writing at the same time:

following web sites all have pages listing details of the recordings of the artist to which the link refers. Many researchers will find these lists invaluable. Alas, no two discographies are alike. Many discographers compile lists of only the recordings and the catalogue numbers. But some also list recording dates and a very few include matrix numbers. The occasional list will supply recording details including location information. Very few follow the conventions for writing discographies, but never the less provide the required information. We may never achieve uniformity on these pages, but so long as they are available, the information will be available for future use. Violin Land would like to thank every hard-working and diligent discographer, for, without them it would be a sadder world. A B C D ... Z A

Vadim Repin In a musical world obsessed with image, gimmickry and other superficial values, Vadim Repin represents unselfconscious individuality and profound though unfussy musicianship. He loves his instrument with a fervour and dedication that recall his great violinistic forebears Jascha Heifetz, Fritz Kreisler and David Oistrakh; and yet he retains a mind of his own. Repin was a pupil of the legendary Professor Zakhar Bron. And he too has enjoyed his fair share of triumphs. At eleven he was awarded first prize at the international Wieniawski Competition and at seventeen, he won the exacting Reine Elisabeth Competition. But by then he was already something of a performing veteran, having first appeared with orchestra ten years earlier. He gave his first recital at the age of eleven, in St. Petersburg.
Numerous concerts and recitals are planned for future seasons, with partners such as violist Yuri Bashmet and conductors Myung Whun Chung, Yakov Kreizberg, Kurt Sanderling and David Zinman.

Wednesday, January 22, 2003 World renown violinist comes to Spivey Hall Vadim Repin, the Russian violinist described by Yehudi Menuhin as "Simply the best, most perfect violinist I have heard," makes his Atlanta debut in recital at Spivey Hall on Friday, Jan. 24 at 8:15 p.m. At Spivey, Repin, along with pianist Boris Berezovsky, will play Guiseppe Tartini's Sonata in G minor, Op. 1, No. 6 ("Devil's Trill"), Sergei Prokofiev's Violin Sonata No. 1 in F minor, Op. 80, Edvard Grieg's Sonata No. 2 in G major, Op. 13, Ernest Chausson's Poème, Op. 25, and Maurice Ravel's Tzigane: rapsodie de concert. Born in Siberia (in the same town that produced that other great, young Russian violinist, Maxim Vengerov), Repin shot to stardom when, at age 17, he won the Reine Elisabeth Concours, the most demanding and prestigious violin competition in the world. He has since performed with the world's great orchestras and conductors, earning lavish praise at nearly every stop. The Berlin Tagesspiegel dubbed him "The greatest living violinist," for instance, while The Chicago Tribune was bit more restrained, merely praising his "magisterial technique and finely nuanced palette." The Miami Herald characterized one concert as a "boldly sculptured, scrupulously clean, perfectly proportioned performance played with piercingly beautiful tone, bull's-eye intonation and an easy dexterity."

World Shattering Violinist Makes Debut In NZSO'S Opening Season Concerts "My nomination for CD immortality is the Shostakovich First Violin Concerto as played by Vadim Repin. He dominates the platform and plays with authority and control producing a sound so true and pure even when under pressure." Editor, The Strad, November 2000. The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra opens Season 2002 in April by showcasing one of the world's greatest violinists, Vadim Repin. The 30 year old will perform Tchaikovsky's romantic violin concerto as part of the Great Classics series, with NZSO Music Director, James Judd, on the podium. Repin will perform in Christchurch, Wellington, Hawke's Bay, Hamilton and Auckland. The late Yehudi Menuhin called Repin "simply the best, the most perfect violinist I have ever heard". Repin's recording of three Mozart Concertos under Menuhin's baton with the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, received the 1999 Echo Klassik Award, and saw Repin named Instrumentalist of the Year. Siberian-born Vadim Repin's international career began at 17 after winning one of the most prestigious and demanding violin competitions in the world, the Queen Elisabeth Competition in Brussels. Since then he has appeared with the world's greatest orchestras and carved out a stellar career.

But there is a common historical thread binding nearly all of them, for of the eleven pieces presented, nine were written or arranged by virtuoso violinists. Ponce and Tchaikovsky are the exceptions, being remarkably gifted pianists rather than string players. But in the case of Tchaikovsky Repin stands on familiar soil, sharing as he does his Russian heritage. There are other links, too. Four of the works are sets of variations on a theme, of which two are based on original melodies and two on opera arias by other composers. Three take well-known national dances (a polonaise, a waltz and a zapateado) as their basic musical material. And two of the pieces (Der Erlkonig and La Ronde des lutins) concern themselves with menacing, other-wordly beings.
