(CBS) Itzhak Perlman is one of the greatest violinists of the last century. When Mike Wallace first profiled Perlman in 1980, he was already famous.
But in the years since, he has become an even bigger superstar. Last year Wallace returned to see what Perlman was up to.

At age 35, Perlman was performing more than 100 times a year, all over the world. He began his career at the age of 3, when he asked his parents for a violin. The next year he came down with polio. Ever since he has had to wear braces on his legs and walk with crutches. In 1958, when he was 13, he performed on The Ed Sullivan Show. As a child prodigy, Perlman said, he was very aware of his disability. "I could show you reviews when I first came to the United States,"

    KNIGHT RIDDER NEWS SERVICE

SHELTER ISLAND, N.Y. "Oh, my goodness!" squeals a 13-year-old violinist at the Perlman Music Program. "Look at Itzhak."
Itzhak Perlman is sitting in his motorized wheelchair, draped head-to-toe in an elaborate green-and-pink paisley robe and matching paper crown: the Grand Pooh-bah of Classical Music.
It is a late summer day in 2001, and the camp is putting the final touches on its production of "The Mikado," with you-know-who in the title role. Maybe there's another musician of Perlman's stature in the starched world of classical music who might be willing to look this silly, but at the moment no name comes to mind. A bemused smile crosses his face.
"I'm so old school," he deadpans.
At 56, Perlman has entered the second act of his storied career. Long established as one of the greatest violinists of our time, his priorities are increasingly shifting to conducting and teaching. Not that he's giving up the fiddle, his first and greatest love. But, after more than 35 years of exhaustive globe-trotting, Perlman is falling in love again with the possibilities of music.
This week he concludes his first season as principal guest conductor of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, an experiment that is succeeding beyond nearly everyone's expectations. He has engaged musicians, impressed critics, charmed donors and excited audiences.

Itzhak Perlman, In the Fiddler's House (Angel Records, 1995) From the formal opening triumphant strains of "Brave Old World" to the highly-varied, improvisational closing "Di Gayster," this recording explores the nooks and crannies of Klezmer music. The brain-child of Michael Alpert, violinist for the group Brave Old World, this recording explores four of the best-known contemporary Klezmer groups (the Klezmatics, the Andy Statmand Klezmer Orchestra, the Klezmer Conservatory Band, and Brave Old World) and, in the process, gives a brilliant overview of what Klezmer music is all about. The addition of Itzhak Perlman is the piece de resistance. The best way to comprehend the scope and depth of the recording is to get to know the featured performers. Brave Old World was formed in 1989 in an effort to bring new Klezmer music to the world as a whole. This band has a style all their own, taking the roots of Yiddish music to new heights with a bit of jazz-like improvisation and a heart-felt sincerity. Their innovative material has included songs about contemporary issues (such as the fall of the Berlin Wall) and collaborative efforts with a wide variety of Eastern European musicians. The Klezmatics work a great deal with traditional material, giving it a modern edge that appeals to a wide variety of audiences. Their vocals and clarinet lines (both alto and bass) give their music a wonderful layered texture.

PRESS RELEASE - 00032101 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Contacts: Joan Fallon March 21, 2000 VIOLINIST ITZHAK PERLMAN AND DAUGHTER, NAVAH, TO PERFORM AT MAY 10 TH Dedicated to raising funding for research and treatment of arthritis, world renowned violinist Itzhak Perlman and his daughter, Navah, an accomplished concert pianist, will perform on Wednesday, May 10 th at the Shubert Theatre to benefit the new Itzhak Perlman Family Arthritis Treatment Center at Tufts-New England Medical Center. Mr. Perlman and Dr. Steere met while they were both studying the violin at the Juilliard School in New York. Their paths diverged. While Dr. Steere began a career in medicine, which led to groundbreaking work in identifying and treating Lyme disease, his Juilliard friend went on to become the premier violinist of his generation, as well as an eloquent spokesman on behalf of those with disabilities. "The Perlman family is committed to making the Perlman Center the preeminent arthritis treatment and research center in the nation," said Malcolm L. Sherman, Chairman of the NEMC Board of Trustees. "With this concert we are on our way." Sponsorship or tickets for the May 10 th concert at the Shubert Theatre are available by calling Conventures at 617-439-7700.

The Itzhak Perlman Family Arthritis Treatment Center
The Itzhak Perlman Family Arthritis Treatment Center is a new, centralized patient care facility that encompasses all clinical care activities of the Rheumatology/Immunology Division at New England Medical Center, Tufts University School of Medicine. The new Center is a result of a collaboration between Dr. Allen Steere, the Chief of the Rheumatology/Immunology Division, and Itzhak Perlman, who is widely recognized as the greatest violinist of his generation. Itzhak, Toby, and Allen met as teenagers at a summer music school called Meadowmount, where they studied violin under Ivan Galamian, the Director of Violin Studies at the Juilliard School of Music. Dr. Steere’s and the Perlman’s paths came together again in the late 1980’s when the Perlman’s daughter Navah, a critically acclaimed concert pianist, fought and overcame the debilitating symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis under Dr. Steere’s care. Over the past decade, Itzhak and Toby and the entire Perlman family have supported Dr. Steere’s work. On May 10, 2000, Itzhak and Navah played a benefit concert to launch the new Center, and the following day, the "Itzhak Perlman Family Arthritis Treatment Center" was formally dedicated in their honor. It is a living testament to their generosity and leadership role in the fight to conquer arthritis and other rheumatic diseases. The mission of the Center is to provide optimal and complete clinical care of patients with arthritis or other rheumatic diseases, to educate doctors and patients about these diseases, and to advance treatment of these illnesses through state-of-the art clinical and basic science research. In the clinic, patients are cared for with all types of rheumatic diseases. Under the guidance of the faculty, medical students, medical residents, and post-doctoral fellows learn about rheumatic disease patients. Clinical research includes treatment studies of various nutritional agents in patients with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis. Laboratory research is focused on understanding the role of infectious agents, autoimmunity, and cytokines in certain rheumatic diseases, with a special focus on Lyme disease, a tick-borne spirochetal infection.

Anyone knows that it is impossible to play a symphonic work with just three strings. I know that, and you know that, but that night Itzhak Perlman refused to know that. Earlier this year, Itzhak Perlman, the violinist, came on stage to give a concert at Avery Fisher Hall at Lincoln Center in New York City. If you have ever been to a Perlman concert, you know that his getting on stage is no small achievement for him. He was stricken with polio as a child, and so he has braces on both legs and walks with the aid of two crutches. To see him walk across the stage one step at a time, painfully and slow, is an unforgettable sight: He walks painfully, yet majestically, until he reaches his chair. Then he sits down, slowly, puts his crutches on the floor, undoes the clasps on his legs, tucks one foot back and extends the other foot forward. Then he bends down and picks up the violin, puts it under his chin, nods to the conductor and proceeds to play. By now the audience is used to this ritual. They sit quietly while he makes his way across the stage to his chair. They remain reverently silent while he undoes the clasps on his legs. They wait until he is ready to play.
