Friday, December 27, 2002 Bravos resound from packed performance halls By R.M. CAMPBELL
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC There were dozens upon dozens of concerts, in music and dance, this past year some good, some bad, some indifferent. There are those who say these ancient art forms are in decline, but I saw and heard plenty of talent, along with plenty of full houses. Some stick in the memory months later. Here's a compressed list of some of the highlights from 2002.
  • BOLSHOI BALLET: This famed company, which suffered from lack of artistic vision earlier in the century and now lack of money, still generates interest whenever it tours. On its last visit to Seattle in early November, more than 15,000 people filled the Paramount for the company's decidedly old-fashioned "Swan Lake" and splendid dancers.
  • PACIFIC NORTHWEST BALLET: In transition from the Opera House to Marion Oliver McCaw Hall, which opens this summer, the company has deftly managed its temporary home. Kent Stowell's "Carmen" made good use of the theater's contemporary ambience, while managing to make Ronald Hynd's "The Merry Widow" immensely pleasurable. Its mixed bill last month sang out with bold theater and terrific dancing. Balanchine's "Concerto Barocco" was given a reading of subtle refinement and wonderful lucidity, while Glen Tetley's "Voluntaries," led by Patricia Barker, has never been stronger or more moving. Paul Gibson's "Rush" revealed this dancer, a principal at PNB, as a choreographer of great promise.

    "bach circle"
By Tom Moore, Early Music America, Winter 2002-03 It's a measure of the depths to which the recording industry has fallen that such an excellent disc should be issued by the ensemble that recorded it, rather than by a label that could provide more extensive distribution (it is not available through any of the major online sites). The Burney Ensemble was founded by flutist Sonja Boon, a student of Wilbert Hazelzet and Rachel Brown, in 1998; this disc, recorded in July of 2001, is the ensemble's first. The various works from Bach, his family, and his students, should all be familiar to devotees of this repertoire, but rarely have they been so well recorded. CD details

    http://www.slipcue.com/music/jazz/sweetbands_01.html
My taste in jazz is, as they say, strictly from Squaresville. The stuff I love "sweet" dance band music and crooner tunes doesn't get a lot of respect in "real" jazz circles. Only recently have the jazz purists reluctantly and begrudgingly admitted that some of the big bands actually had it going on... For the most part, the hep cat crowd would prefer to believe that real jazz music began with Dizzy Gillespie, and only really picked up steam in the smoky confines of the 1950s. I, on the other hand, adore the softer stuff, and love delving into the corny but well-crafted sentimentality of the Tin Pan Alley tradition. And, frankly, I prefer listening to something I can hum along to, rather than some squonky improvisation that requires concerted effort to really "get". Hard jazz is just too damn cerebral for my tastes.. so here is my celebration of good old-fashioned corny, simple love songs, backed by perky little melodies. That being said, this page is a work in progress, and currently contains no content. Check back with me in a while. Some other pages of interest: Recommended Records

A talented Lancaster based trio who have recently made quite an impact in the region's folk clubs and farther afield with their thoughtful and quietly compelling brand of contemporary acoustic songwriting. Their sound world is characterised by a blend of soft-hued twin-guitar work and well-harmonised vocal lines with alternating leads. Their well-observed and crafted songs have an assuredly melodic quality. Kate and Paul don't feel the need to need to prove their instrumental capabilities, so there's no bravado or blustering display of technique, just unobtrusively accomplished playing of filigree intricacy. Tony Taffinder adds a diversity to their arrangements with guitar, bouzouki, mandolin, mandola, fiddle, flute, whistles, harmonicas, bodhran, bass guitar and voice.

    "W" ENTRIES [ Marek Weber Orch. ]

This Austrian-born violinist and bandleader studied both in Berlin and Vienna. At just age 17, Weber was already showing his talent as a leader when conducting a Berlin hotel orchestra, and developing skills that he would later utilize in leading large orchestras specializing in Viennese Waltz music. After emigrating to the United States, Weber had a successful career in Radio and Recordings. During 1938-'39, he was the conductor for the 'Contented Hour' radio show (sponsored by Carnation Brand Condensed Milk), and continued to be musically active well into the 1940s. Interestingly, during his lifetime, Marek donated his violins to the Indiana University School of Music, where they were used by needy students. Later, in her will, his widow Mrs. Anna Weber established an endowment for the university that continued her husband's philanthropy and his love of music. Honoring the memory of her husband, The Anna Weber Endowment Fund provides two violin scholarships, at the IU School of Music, to be given annually to a male and a female student who demonstrate financial need.
