Violinists' Discographies on the Web
The
following web sites all have pages listing details of the recordings of the artist to which the link refers. Many researchers will find these lists invaluable. Alas, no two discographies are alike. Many discographers compile lists of only the recordings and the catalogue numbers. But some also list recording dates and a very few include matrix numbers. The occasional list will supply recording details including location information. Very few follow the conventions for writing discographies, but never the less provide the required information. We may never achieve uniformity on these pages, but so long as they are available, the information will be available for future use. Violin Land would like to thank every hard-working and diligent discographer, for, without them it would be a sadder world. A B C D ... Z A

Yehudi Menuhin, 1916-1999
Violin virtuoso, promoter of peace and educator Yehudi Menuhin, whose career spanned three quarters of a century, died March 12, 1999 in Berlin, DDR. Menuhin, whose many awards included the Jawaharlal Nehru Award for International Understanding, and used his music to spread his message of peace, understanding and tolerance, was 82 years old. Yehudi Menuhin was born in New York, NY on April 22nd, 1916 to Russian Jewish parents who came to America via Palestine. Menuhin was born an American citizen but later enjoyed dual citizenship as a subject of the British Empire. Menuhin received his first violin at the age of 5, and it quickly became evident that he was a rare musical prodigy, a virtuoso violinist Itzhak Perlman noted may have been "the most phenomenal child prodigy that ever existed, certainly in this century" Menuhin made his professional debut at the age of 7 in San Francisco, CA, and at 9 played at the Sistine Chapel in Rome. As an adult Menuhin recalled that he believed that if he played Bach 's 'Chaconne' well enough at the Chapel, that God would hear him and it would bring peace to the world. Menuhin's childhood dream of peace stayed with him throughout his life. As a

Violinist and Visionary Yehudi Menuhin Dies at 82
Violinist Yehudi Menuhin, one of the century's great musicians and a visionary who promoted world peace through international cultural cooperation, died Friday. He was 82. Concert promoter Jutta Adler said Menuhin had been scheduled to conduct the Warsaw Symphony Orchestra in Berlin on Tuesday but fell ill. He died of heart failure in a Berlin hospital. 'A Genetic, Jewish Missionary Need'
Menuhin dropped out of the concert circuit at 19, taking two years off to study violin technique at the family estate in Los Gatos. A prodigy who seemed able to play without effort, he had never concentrated on the essential mechanics of proper fingering and bowing, and he suddenly found it difficult to progress beyond his youthful approach to playing. "Even at the risk of losing all the golden eggs of the future, I had to find out what made the goose lay those golden eggs," he said. He returned an even stronger player, appearing as a major soloist in the prewar years, performing with such internationally renowned conductors as Arturo Toscanini, Leopold Stokowski, Thomas Beecham and Dimitri Mitropoulos. Played for Survivors of Nazi Death Camp

51. Yehudi Menuhin Memorial
After all the stirring words, noble sentiment and beautiful music at my uncle YehudiMenuhin's memorial in My companion was London violinist Gillian Cohen.
http://www.ffaire.com/viewersbylines/menuhinmain.html
After all the stirring words, noble sentiment and beautiful music at my uncle Yehudi Menuhin's memorial in Westminster Abbey, my companion and I emerged from the ancient cathedral into a din of ringing bells.
We were part of a procession coming out the Great West Door, not far behind Prince Charles, former Prime Ministers Thatcher and Heath, and diplomats, religious figures and royalty from all over the world. The photographers' flashes were appropriate accompaniment to the strangely harmonious ancient-sounding, mind-altering cacophony of the bells. The dignitaries were getting into their Bentleys and Daimlers to be whisked away, but we walked on past the police barricades and out into the street looking for a taxi.
My companion was London violinist Gillian Cohen.
"They haven't done anything like this since Princess Diana," she said with awe about the memorial for my fiddler uncle, easily the 20th century's greatest child prodigy whose first recordings dated back to 1928. A day later The Times confirmed Gillian's words by describing the memorial as "the most glittering the Abbey has seen in years..."
Yehudi had died at 82 in March, but his memorial wasn't held until June.

In addition to his being a celebrated violinist, Yehudi Menuhin's international reputation has been enhanced in many ways. He has been instrumental in the organization of three European music festivals, and has also founded a school for young musicians in England. Musically, he has devoted much time to conducting, and in the last twenty years has maintained a deep interest in the music of the East. (He has collaborated on two well-known albums with Ravi Shankar, for example). While talking to Menuhin, one rarely senses that he is in his mid-fifties. Despite his knowledge of music and understanding of people which only comes with time, Menuhin's outlook on life remains as fresh as that of a young child. Perhaps this is, as he has suggested, a result of the fact that as a boy he was comparatively isolated. (A child prodigy, he made his debut playing Beethoven's Violin Concerto at age 11.) In any case, he manifests a great understanding of and interest in both people and his art. Following are excerpts from an hour-long press conference held for Menuhin while he was in Vancouver last week: YM: When I speak of contemporary music, it's not the same as when my son speaks of contemporary music. There's always the generation gap. I realise that I cannot now pretend that when I'm playing Bartok, I'm playing contemporary music, or even Schoenberg. I can't pretend that I'm riding the last crest. I don't in fact know what the last crest is. It's in the airplane that I do most of my contemporary reading, and there's this young English pianist who's the last word in rock, pop, or jazz, whatever you call it. You must know his name ... he jumps on the piano.

Yehudi Menuhin (1916-1999) In the late 1980s I had the opportunity to perform* for Yehudi Menuhin here in the Washington, DC area. His way of being and his presence were inspiring. I felt a deep affinity for him from the moment I met him. In conversation with him I was struck by how free he was from his own personal history as one of the great violinists of the 20th Century. He seemed paradoxically youthful and wise. Yehudi Menuhin led an extraordinary life. He was a celebrated child prodigy. Josef Gingold told me how overwhelmed he felt after hearing a New York recital played by the 11 year old Menuhin (in the 1920's). He said the playing was so magnificent that all the top violinists in New York wanted to burn their instruments immediately afterwards! When Albert Einstein heard the boy Menuhin perform around this time, he exclaimed "now I know there is a God in heaven". Menuhin expanded his commitment far beyond that of a typical violin virtuoso. His commitment to humanity, in so many expressions and projects, was phenomenal. His written utterances command in the reader a suspension of cynicism. Here is an example:
"Each human being has the eternal duty of turning what is hard and brutal into
a tender and subtle offering, what is crude into an object of refinement, what

THE VOICE OF THE VIOLIN
In 1947 the first concert film in film history, CONCERT MAGIC, was produced with Yehudi Menuhin and other musicians. When the film was presented in the movie theatres for the first time in 1948 the audience reacted enthusiastically. Almost after every title it applauded as if being in a concert hall. At the end of the film, when the projectionist showed encores the audience's enthusiasm was boundless. For the first time Yehudi Menuhin recorded in CONCERT MAGIC the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto and other titles, of which it was hitherto unknown to music research that Yehudi Menuhin ever recorded them. With THE VOICE OF THE VIOLIN something was achieved that can be described as unique in music history. More than 50 years later Lord Yehudi Menuhin and Humphrey Burton - the renowned film director of all Leonard Bernstein films and Menuhin expert – are watching the film CONCERT MAGIC . Visibly moved Yehudi Menuhin comments on his technique, remembers why he chose these specific titles, talks about composers and the times, when the film was shot. VHS-video tape, approx. 120 min.

Violinist Yehudi Menuhin died of heart failure in Berlin on March 12 at the age of 83. He was born in 1916 in New York of Russian Jewish parents, and debuted to an astonished San Francisco audience at age 7. Four years later, he played at New York’s Carnegie Hall with the New York Symphony Orchestra under the direction German conductor Fritz Busch. By 13 he was celebrated in Berlin, Paris, and London. Sir Yehudi addressed the Music Personnel Conference when it was held in Las Vegas in February, 1990, at a luncheon that preceded his performance with the English String Orchestra at the University of Nevada. “I’m afraid for the future,” he said. “We have many wonderful musicians, and we need people who can understand them.... It is not fair to limit this music to the elite. We all inherited this music..., and you [public radio programmers] are making people aware of that heritage.” He said that public radio programmers of classical music are the hope for the future. Music, along with the environment and age in which each kind of music was composed and played, should be given more emphasis in our schools; but it is up to public radio programmers to keep the music available and presented well. “We need people like public broadcasters to bring this activity into the schools.”
