"Roscoe is a pianist who both thinks and offers full-blooded playing of breadth and depth. In this country, he is an uncommon creature."
Daily Telegraph, February 2000 Martin Roscoe performs as a concerto soloist, recitalist and chamber musician in many of the major international cultural centres, appearing with leading orchestras and conductors in the world's most respected venues. In the UK Martin has performed with all the major orchestras, developing strong links with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, with whom has given over eighty performances, and the BBC National Orchestra of Wales with whom he has appeared on more than forty occasions. A close relationship with the BBC has led to over four hundred broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 and invitations to perform at the BBC Proms on six occasions. As a recitalist Martin performs in the UK at the Wigmore Hall each season, and further afield has given recitals in South America, Australia, the Lebanon and across Europe. As a chamber musician Martin has partnered Emma Johnson, Michael Collins, the Chilingirian, Endellion, Vellinger, and Schidlof Quartets amongst others. He works regularly with violinist Tasmin Little, with whom he has recently given a series of concerts in Japan. A piano duo with Peter Donohoe, formed in student days, has led to performances at major festivals including Cheltenham, Bath, Harrogate and Edinburgh, as well as a Gershwin disc selected as Editor's Choice in Gramophone magazine.

After the first two movements taken in only one and even concentration, Allegro giocoso final limpid and merry, even facetious (trilles, corrosive, spiccato), far from any dionysiaque howling. Would the listeners have preferred a bow which opera hat of the heel (whereas they claquaient teeth), a violin which pours some strong liquor in their turned blue veins, or did not have the heart to point out Tasmin Little for the test of a bis ? It will never be known, the applause remained, a little like the cold words of Rabelais, captive of the cold air.” Index

Maple Leaf Rag was named for a short-lived social club in Sedalia Missouri, and it is said that publisher heard it only when he stopped in the club for a beer. Since then, it’s hard to overstate its popularity. The first recording of Maple Leaf Rag was made in 1903, but there is no known copy left. In 1917, at the age of 49, Scott Joplin himself made a piano roll of it, but sadly because he was dying of syphilis, the performance is loaded with mistakes. Sister Act

REPORTS FROM THE HENLEY STANDARD
Despite the monsoon conditions last Saturday night, the finale of the Henley Festival went with a bang. Festival-goers donned wellies with their evening suits or dresses to enjoy the entertainment.
As always, the fireworks were stunning, although Mr. Gordon Clark expressed concern that some people in Henley might have been disturbed by the late-night bangs.
Blurp, a spider or a genetic mishap? WEDNESDAY Champagne flutes tinkled as we strolled past elegantly clad picnickers on the opening night of the Henley Festival of Music and the Arts. As usual, the atmosphere was relaxed yet filled with anticipation for the musical delights ahead.
Early visitors were entertained in foot tapping style with numbers from the Trinity College Swing Band at the bandstand whilst browsing around the art galleries or admiring works of art of the sculpture lawn.
Festival-goers were spoilt for choice with entertainment chosen to appeal to a wide audience. For example, from 7 p.m., musicians from the Royal Academy of Music took to the bandstand, whilst the Club Marquee played host to the Marais Wind Ensemble and talented pianist Anne Bolt performed in the Spiegeltent.

In yet another post Sept. 11 related incident, violinist Lara St. John was wrestled to the ground by an armed guard at New York's La Guardia airport when she tried to stop him from inspecting her instrument. The incident was quickly resolved and the violinist dismissed it as a misunderstanding.
St. John, a rising young virtuoso in classical music, reportedly lunged at the guard when he attempted to touch her $1 million Guadagnini violin with a cloth. The violinist said later that she thought the cloth might contain chemicals that would do harm to the instrument's finish. She reportedly cried out, "No! No! It's an antique!"
St. John's violin dates from 1779 and was made by the Italian master in Turin. The violin is on loan to St. John from an anonymous donor. She says she prefers it to the 1702 Lyall Stradivarius which she previously played.
