A musical Huck
It's not farfetched to think of Roger Miller as the George Gershwin of country music, a brilliant songwriter who died too young. Miller wrote a truckload of songs for other performers and had a string of his own hits, including Dang Me, Chug-A-Lug and King of the Road, in the 1960s. When Miller turned to the Broadway musical he was a breath of fresh air for a floundering art form. His Big River: The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn garnered seven Tony Awards after it opened in 1985, but it was the only musical written by Miller, who died at 56 in 1992.

With lots to do, there's still time to say 'I love you'
By MIM ANNE HOUK
published January 29, 2002 February is my favorite month because Valentine's Day is in it. Over-commercialization ruins Christmas for me, but somehow the bigger the box of candy on Feb. 14, the more loved I feel. It's such a dare I say it? sweet, uncomplicated holiday. As a child, I never even minded getting comic valentines; they always seemed innocent and funny. Have they disappeared in the current passion for political correctness? Tampa has a lot to celebrate this month, what with the Gasparilla Pirate Festival and the Florida State Fair. Gasparilla takes over downtown Tampa Feb. 2 and 3, with the flotilla invasion at 11:30 a.m. and the street parade at 1:30 p.m. Saturday. The festival continues from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday. For more information, call (813) 353-8073. For the 98th time, Tampa will host the the Florida State Fair Feb. 7-18. Like all other good state fairs, this one will have arts and crafts, livestock and entertainment, with music headliners such as Travis Tritt and Stars of the Grand Ole Opry. The fairgrounds are at 4800 U.S. 301; for additional information, call (813)-621-7821.

Close Encounters offers family-friendly fare
By Richard Houdek
Special to The Eagle
STOCKBRIDGE Thanksgiving is regarded as the most singularly American of holidays, a time for families to reassemble. And, in a somewhat newer tradition, the weekend of that celebration has become an occasion for Close Encounters With Music to transport its wares to the Norman Rockwell Museum, a monument of Americana dedicated to an artist whose work presented the American family in its most ideal terms. With nostalgic framed Rockwells adorning the walls of the museum's main gallery, Friday evening, Close Encounters' artistic director Yehuda Hanani gathered a few of his family of musicians for a program he called "Cafe Americana." Hanani, with his cello, was joined by pianist and composer Brian Suits, violinist Kyung Sun Lee and vibraphonist and composer Ted Piltzecker. The Long Night
Director Anatole Litvak’s The Long Night Le Jour Se Lève (1939), Litvak’s film stars Henry Fonda as Joe — natch — an ex-GI who, emotionally and spiritually cut off from the America he knew before the war, falls in love with a small-town girl (Barbara Bel Geddes). But when she’s seduced by a traveling showman (Vincent Price, at his pre-horror oily best), Joe reacts badly, killing his rival and holing up in a shabby hotel room with a bloodthirsty army of cops and an angry mob outside. As past and present converge (we get Joe’s story in flashback), and tension builds, it becomes increasingly clear that there will be no satisfying explanation for what Joe has done. There’s only the unsettling knowledge that whatever forces drove him to kill a man are out loose in the world now, wandering the streets of even the smallest town. —Paul Malcolm Other recommended new releases : All About My Mother (VHS-DVD)

Classical Music: PSO and Y import a cast of great players Friday, September 10, 1999 By Robert Croan, Post-Gazette Music Critic The classical music season will start with a bang this year, when Mariss Jansons leads the Pittsburgh Symphony, Mendelssohn Choir and a cast of world-famous soloists in Arnold Schoenberg's mammoth oratorio, "Gurrelieder." It may come as no surprise that almost everything to follow by the Symphony as well as other local organizations will be comparatively tame and predictable. Finnish conductor Jukka-Pekka Saraste will, however, conduct a work by his countryman, Magnus Lindberg in October; and the Emerson String Quartet will play a 1998 opus by Ellen Taafe Zwilich. As for big-name soloists, the Symphony lists violinist Gil Shahan among its guests, while the Y will present pianist Emanuel Ax in recital. Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble is awaiting its new music director, Gil Rose, while embroiled in a dispute over whether the new director has the right to re-audition longtime union musicians, who had been working under an informal arrangement with PNME founder David Stock. At the other end of the chronological spectrum, the Renaissance and Baroque Society has an impressive lineup that includes not only big ensembles such as The King's Noyse but solo recitals including harpsichordist Peter Sykes playing Bach's "Goldberg Variations" complete.
