62. Letter From The Director
We are pleased to be able to present to you two worldclass soloists during ourseason violinist judith ingolfsson and classical guitarist Ernesto Bitetti.
http://www.elkhartcountysymphony.org/letter.html
A Letter from the Director
Dear Music Lovers, We are very excited to present to you the "Wide World of Music" for our 2001-2002 season! Not only will you hear tried-and-true symphonic favorites, but you will also experience many other types and styles of music, from the rhythmic verve and tunefulness of the music of Spanish and Hispanic composers to the drive and soul of African-American music. We are pleased to be able to present to you two world-class soloists during our season: violinist Judith Ingolfsson and classical guitarist Ernesto Bitetti. Ms. Ingolfsson will perform the incomparable Violin Concerto of Beethoven, and Mr. Bitetti performs perhaps the best-known of all guitar concertos, Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez , a concerto so popular that its second movement has been arranged and adapted by famous performers of jazz and pop music. There are wonderful surprises awaiting you at every concert, including the Jubilee Ringers and the Elkhart County Symphony Chorus at our Holiday concert in December, and a community Festival Gospel Choir at our April "Amazing Grace" concert. We will also feature the Elkhart Central High School Orchestra and the winner of the 2002 Student Concerto Competition at our February concert. We are happy to have Elkhart's own Celia Weiss as guest organ soloist at our March concert, along with the Elkhart County Symphony Chorus and Goshen Community Chorale. She will be performing Poulenc's Organ Concerto on the "King of the Instruments," the organ.

CHANTICLEER CONCERT - LA CONCERT ASSOCIATION CLOSES ON HIGH NOTE a capella vocal ensemble. Chanticleer takes their name from the ‘clear singing’ rooster in "The Nun’s Priest’s Tale" from Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales. Founded by Louis Botto 22 years ago, the group has grown in popularity and renown. They recently received a Grammy Award for their new recording The Colors of Love Opening with a 14 th century French motet Alpha vibrans monumentum , the men split into three sections forming sides of an open square, the higher voices facing the audience. This formation allowed a wonderful emphasis of the text with a natural control of dynamics as the lower voices sustained the more active and important upper lines. Ave verum corpus Duo Seraphim For the second section of the concert, the men chose three madrigals from their vast repertoire of English and Italian secular choral pieces. From the frisky frottolo of Josquin des Pres, Il Grillo (The Cricket) to the plaintive Ma Ben (My Dear One) by Danish composer Gistou, each phrase was delicately painted its own appropriate color, as in the echoing "Anch’ io" ("and I, as well…") floating sadly from one man to another. The set was rounded out by John Bennet’s

Washington Performing Arts Society By Stephen Wigler For Baltimore music lovers with either insatiable appetites for concerts or unquenchable thirsts for the world's most celebrated orchestras and recitalists, trips south to hear the offerings of the Washington Performing Arts Society are absolute necessities. Put simply, the WPAS series, which celebrates its 35th anniversary this season, is one of the most glamorous in North America. This season's WPAS highlights some might more accurately be called klieg lights begin with a recital by the great young Welsh bass, Bryn Terfel, at DAR Constitution Hall (Oct. 4). Terfel can be expected to fill every seat, but tickets for Cecilia Bartoli's recital (Oct. 25), in the same huge space, are likely to prove as scarce as the proverbial hen's teeth. They are worth the attempt (and the price); the world's favorite (and only) superstar mezzo-soprano is also a great musician. The troika of superstar vocalists will be completed by an appearance by soprano Dawn Upshaw (Feb. 11). Recitals by instrumentalists by up-and-coming musicians as well as by established stars are more plentiful. Local piano aficionados may remember Ilya Itin as the young Russian whose , dreamily lyrical playing of Rachmaninov and Chopin deserved better than the second prize he received at the William Kapell Competition more than ten years ago. Itin was better appreciated at the more prestigious Leeds Competition in 1995, when he earned first prize. His WPAS recital debut in the Kennedy Center's Terrace Theater may prove fascinating (Oct. 21). Another appearance in the Terrace theater by an even younger Moscow-trained pianist, Katia Skanavi, whose keyboard style is stormy rather than dreamy, is also worth investigating (Dec. 2). Two musicians who do not need an introduction are cellist Yo-Yo Ma and pianist Emanuel Ax., who give a joint recital in the center's Concert Hall (Dec. 5).

published December 9, 2001 DAPONTE STRING QUARTET; BEETHOVEN STRING QUARTETS OPUS 18 (available at www.daponte.org) Given today's climate of anxiety, it is hardly surprising that some seek solace in the cool rationality of late 18th century music. The baroque concept of musical dialogue was cultivated and raised to new levels in the music of Mozart, Haydn and especially Beethoven. Eventually the string quartet became the apotheosis of the new style. What, after all, could be more intelligible and dignified than a stratified, if abstract, dialogue given to four individuals at the helm of their respective instruments? No one knew this better, or conveyed it more persuasively, than Beethoven. His early quartets, particularly when played as elegantly as they are here by the DaPonte String Quartet, make a compelling case for the genre. Witness, for example, how cleverly Beethoven varies, within such a short space of time, the principal motive of the Allegro con brio of the F major quartet, Op. 18 No. 1. The DaPonte takes pains to illuminate the contours of such material without compromising any of the rhythmic trajectory upon which it depends. Again, in the earnest strains that inaugurate the opening movement of the C minor quartet, Op. 18 No. 4, this exemplary ensemble's playing combines with its seasoned rapport in serving the work's bold lyricism.
