Cover Story: Hilary Hahn - Violinist with a vision PSO opens new season with a bright, young star Friday, September 15, 2000 By Andrew Druckenbrod, Post-Gazette Classical Music Critic Hilary Hahn wants to personally thank you for listening. Pittsburgh Symphony PSO opens season with street party New faces in the PSO Hilary's 'Hahn-line' journal She doesn't say it in such a cheesy way she is 20 years old after all but the American violin virtuoso is doing her part and then some to help right the good ship classical. In a keynote address she gave this summer at the annual conference of the American Symphony Orchestra League in Boston, Hahn tactfully urged her fellow musicians to work harder to connect with audiences and offered tangible ways to do so. She advocated that artists look at "music television, the Internet, direct contact with audiences and programs for kids," while also maintaining they not be "reluctant to talk with the media." "To me, all of these activities on the part of artists are connected to the goal of breaking down barriers that keep people from coming to classical concerts," she said. "This isn't a matter of self-interest or egomania it's an effort to help with classical outreach." Hahn hasn't changed her tune since that conference "I think that there's a lot that [artists] can do that isn't too energy-consuming that would make a big difference," Hahn says over the phone. She'll put that theory into practice again this weekend when she performs in the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra's season-opening concert with music director Mariss Jansons. She'll play Samuel Barber's Violin Concerto in a concert that also includes Bela Bartok's Concerto for Orchestra and Ottorino Respighi's "Feste romane."

Hilary Hahn describes the playing technique of Mischa Elman.
GP : How and why did you become involved with this documentary, THE ART OF VIOLIN?
HH
GP
: Did you listen to the recordings of violinists from earlier eras as part of your violin study?
HH
GP
: Are there any particular 20th-century violinists who have influenced you or whose playing you greatly admire?
HH : I was surely most influenced by my two teachers Klara Berkovich in Baltimore, from age five to ten, and Jascha Brodsky in Philadelphia, from age ten to 17. Both were very demanding teachers, but very kind, superb violinists: musicians of style and taste who allowed no technical shortcuts. I was extremely lucky to grow up under their guidance.
GP : Is there anyone who should have been included in the film who wasn't?
HH
GP
: How should the archival material featured in the film be viewed, and what is its value to young artists?
HH : It gives young players and old ones, for that matter an opportunity to see that they are part of a long and very rich tradition of violinists, each of whom played differently, each of whom played effectively. And for those who are studious, it is a great resource for studying the technique of playing the violin. Nearly every school, every body type, every possible manner of holding the violin and bow is represented. GP : The filmmakers touch on the fact that the careers of some child prodigies were cut short due to the pressures of stardom. Is this a concern among contemporary artists like yourself, who have been in the spotlight from such a young age? How do you cope with the rigors of performing and being in the public eye?

Violinist Hilary Hahn thrills Benaroya audience Wednesday, October 17, 2001 By R.M. CAMPBELL
SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER MUSIC CRITIC Hilary Hahn may be a mere 21, but she is hardly a novice on the international music scene. MUSIC REVIEW VIOLINIST HILARY HAHN, with pianist Natalie Zhu COMPOSERS: Brahms, Bach, Mozart
and Saint-Saens
WHEN: Monday night
WHERE: Benaroya Hall She has been talked about, as an immensely gifted violinist, since she was in her midteens, and already has played on a good share of the world's important stages. For once, Seattle has not had to wait to hear this kind of musician in the early stage of a career. Thanks to the enterprising and alert Seattle Symphony Orchestra, Hahn made her local debut more than two years ago and returned to appear with the orchestra this past spring. On Monday night at Benaroya Hall, Hahn made her recital debut, opening the symphony's Distinguished Artists Series. She proved she was adept on stage with only a pianist an excellent pianist at that, Natalie Zhu as she is with an orchestra. The program of Brahms, Bach, Mozart and Saint-Saens was hardly adventuresome, as one might think a 21-year old might be, but it revealed, in the main, the kind of gifts Hahn possesses.

Violinist Hilary Hahn shows off international style in concert By Wes Blomster
Camera Classical Music Critic Baltimore-born Hilary Hahn is an all-American kid, but Russian "by proxy." Hahn had her first lessons at age 4; on a walk with her father, she passed Peabody Conservatory and heard a 4-year-old fiddler playing "Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star." She wanted to do that, too. Her first teacher was Klara Berkovich, who had taught at a St. Petersburg school for gifted children. At 10, she moved to Curtis to study with Jascha Brodsky, then 83. She worked with him until his death in 1997; she then studied with Jaime Laredo. "Curtis is a very international place," Hahn says. "You're always around a lot of people from other countries. But I really am a bit of the Russian."

"You only have to practice on the days you eat" - Klara Berkovich
Hilary Hahn is a bright rising star. It all started when she saw a sign for violin lessons and asked her father if she could play the violin. She was born November27, 1979 in Lexington, Virginia and began violin at 4 years old in the Baltimore Peabody Conservatory Suzuki program. However by the age of 5 years began to study the violin with Klara Berkovich. When she was 9 years old and studing with Berkovick, Hilary gave her first recital
She went from there to the Curtis Institute of Music when she was only 10 years old, and studied with Jascha Brodsky, he was in his 80's while she studied with him for seven years. Hilary graduated May 1999. Jaime Larado has then become her mentor since Brodsky's death. Her first recording was Hilary Hahn Plays Bach . She followed this with the Beethoven Violin Concerto using Fritz Kreisler's cadenzas and Bernstein's Serenade.
First recital, age 9, included the following:
      Handel Sonata
      Wieniawski Caprice in a minor
      Vitali Chaconne
      Romance by Gliére

    BIOGRAPHY
    Hilary Hahn
Hilary Hahn, who has lived in Baltimore since she was three, was born in Lexington, Virginia, in 1979. She began playing the violin one month before her fourth birthday, in the children's program of the Peabody Conservatory. From age five to ten, she studied in Baltimore with Klara Berkovich, a native of Odessa, who taught for 25 years at the Leningrad School for the Musically Gifted.
Her 1993 Philadelphia Orchestra debut was followed by engagements with the Cleveland Orchestra, New York Philharmonic, and Pittsburgh Symphony. In March 1995, at age 15, she made her German debut, playing Beethoven's "Violin Concerto in D Major" with Lorin Maazel and the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra in a concert broadcast on radio and television throughout Europe. Two months later, she received the Avery Fisher Career Grant. In 1996, Ms. Hahn signed an exclusive recording contract with Sony Classical and made her Carnegie Hall debut in New York, as soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra.
Though she had completed the Curtis Institute's requirements when she was 16, she deferred graduation and remained at the school for several more years, taking additional elective courses in languages and literature, being coached regularly by Jaime Laredo, and studying chamber music with Felix Galimir and Gary Graffman. In May 1999, at the age of 19, Ms. Hahn graduated from Curtis with a Bachelor of Music degree.
