All about Bows
Original Article by The CD String School © 1998 - Please use all info. ® ver 0.60 Introduction France England Germany INTRODUCTION A good bow is often considered as important as the violin itself. Students should not overlook the importance of possessing a reasonable bow. The best bows are without question French. They are sought after for their exceptional qualities which secure a fine, rich and rounded sound. They are followed in quality by English bows, though early English bows compare well with French bows. English bows are more sturdy and stable, lying half way between French and German bows in style and framework. German bows come last, and are very popular in their mass produced and affordable quantities. Remarkably, no other country has a tradition or school of bow making. As with English bows, some of the earlier makers produced their best bows. Oistrakh, though very fond of French bows ( he would buy a whole bunch every visit to Paris ) played with one of the original German Nurnbergers. In early times, it was common practice for violin makers and shops to stamp the bows supplied by others. PRE-HISTORY back to top A Transitional bow was used in Mannheim for the compositions of Tartini, Haydn and Mozart. F.Tourte & The Dodds made them. Wilhelm Cramer ( 1745-99 ), a Mannheim violinist went to London in 1772. The type of bow he used is called "The Cramer bow". Tartini was also involved in improving bows, around 1730, using lighter wood and using a straighter stick ( as opposed to a convex curve ) He also established the octagonal form of the bow at the heel. . The Cramer bow was also quite straight, but Tourte Pere used a decidedly concave stick as used nowadays. From an illustration in Leopold Mozart's Violinschule, it can be seen that convex bows were still being used in Germany for some time after these improvements.

The new and cool site will be coming out in hopefully by October 1 at http://www.dyslexia.tv Fifteen percent of the population has some level of a 'developmental learning disability', stemming from 'dyslexia'. Mostly developed from lack of proper attention to the root of 'dyslexia' because of superficial understanding. The original meaning of dyslexia was coined by Dr. Rudolph Berlin of Stuttgart, in the late 1800's; that 'dyslexia' was a Specific difficulty in the interpretation of symbol. Today 'dyslexia' is an umbrella buzz word of the many faces of learning difficulties. It's a blessing to have some of the characteristics of 'dyslexia'. It could be a nightmare when one doesn't understand it, or properly treat it. Some of the traits of dyslexics are; seeing, thinking, and perceiving 'multi-dimensionally'. Dyslexics tend to find it difficult to understand language in a traditional method of learning. Bridging the two worlds together and harnessing the hidden talents of dyslexics is the challenge.

    Reviews The Gallic Touch
    by Gary Lemco
With the final, rollicking and irreverent strains of Ibert's Divertissement (1930) resounding through the Los Altos United Methodist Church, Sunday, February 2, 2003, conductor David Ramadanoff concluded a thoroughly ingratiating, predominantly French program with the Master Sinfonia Chamber Orchestra. This second afternoon concert by the fine, local ensemble featured violinist Joseph Gold in the only non-Gallic offering, the Violin Concerto (1982) by Filip Pavlov, as well as orchestral selections by Ravel and Poulenc, whose G Minor Organ Concerto enjoyed the splendid playing of Larry Crummer.
Maurice Ravel's bittersweet Le Tombeau de Couperin (1919) opened Ramadanoff's program. The four-movement suite has a romantic character in the face of World War I, although its "ancient style" is a throwback to the idealized age of the French clavecinists . The Master Sinfonia applied a shimmering patina to this delicate score, whose oboe soli and occasionally pentatonic writing have some of the wistfulness of the composer's

    STOLEN
Luigi Alberto Bianchi had his companion of 11 years, his remarkable Stradivari Colossus violin, stolen in Rome, Italy on November 3, 1998 . This unique violin is known as "Colossus" because of its slightly bigger than normal size. It was made by Antonio Stradivari in Cremona, Italy in 1716. It previously belonged to Giovanni Battista Viotti, Baillot, and to Jacques Thibaud who sold it in 1920. It was bought in 1987 in London at Christie's. Along with the "Colossus" were also stolen two rare bows made by Dominique Peccatte (Mirecourt 1810-1874):
    • A silver mounted violin bow : round stick of a chestnut-brown colour, ebony frog inlaid with pearl eyes, ebony adjuster, with two silver bands, stamped "Vuillaume à Paris" on the shaft, 62 grams. A gold mounted violin bow : round stick of a chestnut-brown colour, ebony frog inlaid with pearl eyes, ebony adjuster, with two gold bands, no brand, previously owned by Blaise Calame in Geneva, 61.5 grams.
