Gold, Cheadle To Appear At School Benefit
One of the Canyon Charter Elementary School's leading alumni, violinist Joseph Gold, will perform at a benefit concert for the school's music program on Sunday, March 18.
Described by the late San Francisco Chronicle columnist as "a giant on earth," Southern California native Gold attended Canyon School in Santa Monica Canyon as a young boy, went on to the University of Southern California and was coached by the great Jascha Heifetz.
Hosting the benefit will be acclaimed actor Don Cheadle, most recently seen in "Traffic" and "Family Man." Voiceover actor Hector Herrera will also appear, reading bi-lingual translations of the Spanish tale, "Ferdinand the Bull" and an assortment of Spanish poetry. Spanish Guitarist Jaime Torrent, making his first U.S. appearance, will accompany Gold.
Proceeds will help to fund the instrumental music program at Canyon Charter School, one of the oldest schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.
The benefit is scheduled for Sunday, March 18, 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., in Janes Hall at the Presbyterian Church of Pacific Palisades, 15821 Sunset Boulevard, Pacific Palisades. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for children and will be available at the door. Refreshments will be served.

Front Page Festival Review World News The 1999-2000 Tour Biography Acclaim Links Calendar Spring 2000 Tour Review reprinted with permission Many violinists are merely content to run through today's standard recital format of one sonata after another, rarely bothering to try anything that might disrupt the routine. San Francisco's Joseph Gold, however, chooses to go his own way, playing technically challenging music with a Romantic bent, often centered around a unifying theme. A former student of Jascha Heifetz (you can hear the Heifetz influence in his incisive attacks), Gold has been offering his fresh alternative to the same old thing in major cities like Vienna, Barcelona and Florence on his just-completed European tour. On one Saturday evening, with a young, hugely gifted, Northern Italian pianist Marco Cadario as his partner, Gold put together a program centered around the music of the Italian violin sorcerer Niccolo Paganini. In doing so, Gold and Cadario had to contend with the extremely long reverberation time of the Chiesa Parrocchiele Sangiano, which could easily turn a rapid string of detached notes into blurred tonal hash. Yet with crisply executed attacks and releases, the pair minimized the problems posed by the church's tricky acoustics (Gold and Cadario repeated this program a week later in Florence's Cherubini Conservatory, where the acoustics were friendlier). Sailed through sandtraps Opening with Paganini's "Duetto Amoroso," a lyrical dialogue between male and female lovers (both impersonated by the violin), Gold's interpretation has clearly deepened, emphasizing the difference between the two voices without giving way to excess sentiment. A sonata by the Baroque-period composer Locatelli seemed to look forward about a century in time - and it pushes even further ahead with its ragtime-like syncopations in the second movement. With its recitative-like passages and full-blown arias, Spohr's Violin Concerto No. 8 (transcribed for violin and piano) is actually an operatic scene in all but name - and Gold recognized this by carefully maintaining a sustained singing line while easily sailing through the technical sandtraps that Spohr placed in his path.

“Life begins after retirement.” In six short years since he retired from the San Francisco Public Schools, Joseph Gold, violinist, has achieved worldwide acclaim. He began his retirement by being chosen as concertmaster of the renowned Spoleto Music Festival in Italy. In addition to this prestigious position, Mr. Gold was director of chamber music in Spoleto. Luciano Pavarotti, the renowned tenor, heard Joe practicing and was so impressed that he immediately engaged the California native to be his solo violinist. Mr. Gold has been praised on four continents for his brilliant interpretations of the great repertoire of the 19 th century violin virtuosos Paganini, Sarasate, Bazzini, and others. A graduate of the University of Southern California, he studied with the legendary Jascha Heifetz. Gold has played concert tours of Europe and Asia, including the countries of Bulgaria, Spain, Switzerland, and Italy, among others. In addition, he is the author of the definitive book Paganini’s Art of Violin Playing and also Sarasate, New Light on a Brilliant Star
