BROOKS SEASON SEPT. 3
Swinging jazz tunes of the '30s, '40s and '50s will open the 1998-99 season of the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts at Clemson University when the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra performs Sept. 3 at 8 p.m. Under the leadership of legendary trombonist Buddy Morrow, the big band will play the orchestra's signature tune, "Opus One." Morrow, who has led the 16-piece ensemble since 1975, has been performing his noteworthy brand of swing since the late '30s. He has played with big band greats Artie Shaw, Eddy Duchin and Tommy Dorsey. For RCA Victor, he formed his own orchestra and recorded the chart-topping tune "Night Train." Tickets to the toe-tapping show are $12.50 for the general public, $10 for senior citizens and $6 for students. Neighborhood concert: Salem Baptist and Christ Community choirs with the Symphony, May 24 and 25
Omaha Symphony Gets Religion
OMAHA, Neb. (May 3, 2002) - The "good news" gets better when the Omaha Symphony teams up with two of the city's best known gospel choirs.
Salem Baptist's Voices of Victory and Christ Community's adult choir join the region's premier orchestra for two neighborhood gospel concerts, taking place Friday, May 24, 7:30 p.m. at Christ Community Church and Saturday, May 25, 7:30 p.m. at Salem Baptist Church.
The symphony's final neighborhood concert of the 2001-2002 season features the patriotic "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and "America The Beautiful" as well as classical works alongside new and familiar gospel songs.
Soloists include Omaha Symphony principal trumpet Steve Erickson on Haydn's Concerto for Trumpet and cellist Patrice Jackson on Elgar's Concerto for Violincello. Jackson is a first place winner of the Sphinx Competition, a national competition of young black and latino string players.
"The Neighborhood Concert series takes orchestral music out of the concert hall and into the community," said Omaha Symphony Resident Conductor Ernest Richardson. "Joining with churches in west and north Omaha makes this gospel concert a true city-wide event."
