By Steven Uhles

Staff Writer Violinist Vadim Gluzman was born in the Soviet Union, is an Israeli citizen and lives in New York. But his language of choice isn't Russian, Hebrew or English. It's music. "I was born in a small town, a village really, in the Ukraine," Mr. Gluzman said during a recent telephone interview from his New York home. "And there the violin was the instrument of celebration. It was something I inherited with my blood. As a musician, I find that it's how I connect. I connect on a musical level." Mr. Gluzman will perform with the Augusta Symphony at 8 p.m. Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday. He was 16 in 1991 when he played for and was befriended by the late violinist Isaac Stern. Three years later, he won the prestigious Henryk Szeryng Foundation Career Award. His talent and dedication to his art have earned him two of the music world's greatest prizes, a chance to play onstage at Carnegie Hall and a Stradivarius violin. Mr. Gluzman's Carnegie Hall debut in 1996 was a high point in his career, but he said his life truly changed when he was offered the opportunity to play the Stradivarius.

VIOLINIST TO PLAY ANTIQUE VIOLIN
IN CLEMSON UNIVERSITY PERFORMANCE
CLEMSON There's no question 24-year-old Vadim Gluzman is a masterful violinist and a rising star in the world of classical music. But it can't hurt his music career to play a 307-year-old Stradivarius violin. Gluzman will play the legendary instrument made in the 1700s by the Italian craftsman Antonio Stradivari during a free recital Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 8 p.m. in the Brooks Center for the Performing Arts at Clemson University. A five-minute audition for legendary conductor Isaac Stern in 1991 launched Gluzman, then 16, on a musical career that has led him to performing as a featured soloist around the world. He has appeared with the Jerusalem Symphony Orchestra, the Monte Carlo Philharmonic and the English String Orchestra and is a top prize winner at competitions in the United States and Europe. Gluzman says that with the Stradivarius, which is on loan from the Stradivari Society of Chicago and is worth more than $1 million, he spends less time on technical violin aspects and more time exploring the musical capabilities not available on a lesser instrument.

Violinist to Perform 'Unplayable' Piece
Wednesday, 15-Jan-2003 12:40PM PST Story from AP / MIKE HOUSEHOLDER, Associated Press Writer
DETROIT (AP) The concerto was penned by one of the great composers and written specifically for one of the world's pre-eminent violin instructors. It was to be played on an instrument of unparalleled quality. It didn't happen. Clari News Just all the news you want, with all the depth you need. Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto was completed in 1878 and written for Leopold Auer, a famed Russian violinist and instructor who also was the owner of a renowned Stradivarius built in 1690. Auer refused, however, to perform the work, deeming it unplayable because of its extreme difficulty. Now, 125 years after its completion, the concerto, one of the most popular in the repertoire, is to be performed on Auer's Stradivarius by Vadim Gluzman. "I enjoy tremendously every time I get to listen to my colleagues play it, and every single time I play it is a miracle," said Gluzman, who was to perform Thursday, Friday and Saturday in his first appearances with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and conductor Neemi Jarvi. "It is indeed a masterpiece." Gluzman, a 29-year-old Israeli, received Auer's Strad six years ago as a loan on a longtime basis from the Stradivari Society.

Some "fiddling." The renowned duo of violinist Vadim Gluzman and pianist Angela Yoffe presented a spellbinding, two-hour concert of works old and new, moving and whimsical Wednesday night before a near-capacity audience in the Roshong Recital Hall at Fort Lewis College. More than half of the audience members were students of the festival’s Conservatory Young Artists program, who will, I suspect, not soon forget the musical pyrotechnics of the evening. Indeed, prior to the program, Arkady Fomin, the artistic director, told the youths that the festival Conservatory was unique for a community of Durango’s size and that the musical faculty was first-rate. Gluzman and Yoffe are, of course, faculty members. The duo then began a spirited performance of Brahm’s "Sonata No. 1 in G." Romantic and often passionate, the three-movement work moved the musicians to a lofty level of emotional, yet disciplined presentation. Playing with closed eyes, swaying back and forth, Gluzman exhibited a near-flawless technical mastery. Yoffe was equally energetic and inspired. Her keyboard work was remarkably physical and confident.

The television crew will be along for more than the ride. Led by Hugh LeVrier of station KREZ, the crew will be videotaping "Brass & Barbecue," the first of 21 concerts in the 15th annual Music in the Mountains classical festival, which runs through Aug. 5. The event is tentatively scheduled to be broadcast on a segment of "CBS Sunday Morning" later in the month. "It’s an exciting development for us," Semanitsky said in a Thursday morning telephone interview from his Phoenix home. "Our board president Jim Foster and people from the railroad have been discussing it with CBS for some time. It looks like they’ve decided to go ahead with it." Semanitzky added that he had, indeed, never ridden the train. "I’ve been too busy building the festival for the past 15 years to find the time," he said with a laugh. "So it’s a first for me, and the train concert is a first for the festival." Another first in the festival is a long-delayed performance of Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony at 5 p.m. Saturday, July 28, in the Fort Lewis College Community Concert Hall. "It’s the only Beethoven symphony we haven’t yet performed," Semanitzky said. "We wanted to do it in our ninth season, but we didn’t have a venue big enough. Now, with that beautiful concert hall, we’ve got the space to do it."

Israeli Violinist Vadim Gluzman Performs Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto

Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto was completed in 1878 and was written for Leopold Auer, the famed Russian violinist and pedagogue who was also the owner, at the time, of a renowned Stradivarius built in 1690. However, Auer never performed the work, calling it unplayable due to its extreme degree of difficulty. Another violinist attempted to learn it, but also dropped the project. After three years, the “unplayable” concerto was finally performed by Adolf Brodsky with the famed Vienna Philharmonic. Although the reviews were decidedly mixed at the time, the work has gone on to become not only one of the most famous and beloved violin concertos of all time, but also one of the most popular pieces to emerge from the Romantic movement.
