Even a genius of Mozart's stature felt the imposing influence of Bach, and this week's concerts include memorable tributes to the 250th anniversary of the Baroque master's death. Hear one of our favorite Baroque orchestras, I Solisti Veneti , in a special concert of Bach and the composer who most influenced him, Vivaldi. Another highly-praised ensemble, Collegium Vocale Gent makes its U.S. debut with two all-Bach programs including the Mass in B-minor and Magnificat in D.
For those who prefer high-power soloists, it's a great week for virtuosi. Garrick Ohlsson joins the for the Schumann quintet, performs Beethoven's 1st Piano Concerto, and Joshua Bell dazzles again with one of the most melodic of early Romantic violin concerti, Henri Vieuxtemps' Concerto No.5. And lastly, the Colorado String Quartet begins the third year of our Haydn Quartet cycle with one hour, afternoon and early evening concerts in the intimate Walter Reade Theater.

By Peter Dobrin Inquirer Music Critic Wolfgang Sawallisch, during his decade-long tenure, had his say on all things Haydn, Brahms, Schumann and Strauss. Now, with the start of his first season as music director of the Philadelphia Orchestra in September, Christoph Eschenbach will use his 12 weeks on the podium to focus on Olivier Messiaen, the mystical, ornithically enchanted 20th-century French composer, and will launch a multiyear Mahler cycle. The orchestra will once again raise ticket prices. This time, it's Saturday night subscription prices going up, by an average of 10 percent. Single-ticket prices will remain the same, according to the orchestra's marketing vice president, J. Edward Cambron.

In its concise description of violinist Gidon Kremer, The Concise Grove Dictionary of Music quips that the 54-year-old Latvian violinist shows "a rare command of the concerto repertory and a sympathetic approach in chamber music." You have to love the Grove's command of understatement. Eight Seasons (which alternated each of Vivaldi's famous Four Seasons concertos with movements from Argentinean tango master Astor Piazzolla's Four Seasons of Buenos Aires suite) and continued with last year's Grammy-winning After Mozart , which brings together the music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (and his father Leopold) and works by 20th-century composers inspired by Mozart. Wigmore Hall at 100
London's favorite chamber-music venue
celebrates a century of music making
by Inge Kjemtrup

This year Wigmore Hall is celebrating 100 years as the jewel in the crown of London’s music scene. Since it began as Bechstein Hall in 1901 as a showpiece for a German piano firm, the hall has attracted performers who appreciate both its fine acoustics and its discriminating audiences. "The audience listens with a keenness that is a kind of participation," wrote a critic in 1934. Cellist Peter Wiley of the Beaux Arts Trio once exclaimed, "Wigmore Hall dares you to excel." Wigmore’s Art Deco entrance on Wigmore Street is a short walk from the bustle of Oxford Street. Once inside, the full impact of architect Thomas Collcutt’s Renaissance-inspired design is realized, especially in the alabaster and marble on the floors, walls, and stairway. In the hall itself, one’s eye is drawn to the stage and the cupola above, which is decorated with an extraordinary mural (and which benefited from a thorough cleaning during a major refurbishment of the hall in the early 1990s). Paula Best, Wigmore’s affable publications manager and archivist, leafs through huge scrapbooks crammed with programs and flyers advertising performances by such luminaries as violinist Joseph Joachim, who offered a series of Brahms’ chamber music in 1906. "It’s easy to forget that Brahms had been dead for less than a decade when these concerts took place," she remarks. Best has been overseeing the slow process of restoring the often-fragile archival material and is seeking to complete the collection—there’s a major gap of material from the late 1940s to the 1950s.

(Philadelphia, February 25, 2003)
Before an audience of journalists, subscribers, Board members, and friends, Christoph Eschenbach marked a new beginning in The Philadelphia Orchestra's esteemed 103-year history today with his announcement of the 2003-04 concert season, his inaugural season as music director. The announcement took place in the Orchestra's home, Verizon Hall, at The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts.
"In Philadelphia we have a city that is rich with tradition, and rich with a desire for excellence," noted Eschenbach. "That is why, for decades, you have sustained one of the world's greatest orchestras, and recently have given it a marvelous new home. For the benefit of this community and for the entire world, there is no limit to the musical experiences we can create together."
Said Joseph H. Kluger, president of The Philadelphia Orchestra Association, "This season demonstrates Christoph Eschenbach's unique talents as an artist and his enormous creativity as a music director. His plan explores new ground for The Philadelphia Orchestra, refreshing the familiar through innovative programming contrasts, and bringing the best of the world's conductors, soloists, and composers to Philadelphia. The musical breadth of these programs, along with the rapport he has established with our musicians and our audiences, heralds a truly remarkable and rewarding artistic era for our community."

FHF Becomes Non-Profit
After nearly 8 months of effort, FHF has finally gained nonprofit status with Federal and State agencies. This means so much to our organization. Particularly to our members who have been paying their membership dues and giving extra donations. Now, all such dues and donations are completely tax deductible. In the case of itemized sales for fund-raising, we must take the total amount of the sale less the actual cost of the item and the difference becomes the deductible donated amount. As a nonprofit organization, we are allowed to raise funds, have holdings and we are able to apply for aid or grants that have "non-profits status" as a prerequisite to their applicants. We are allowed to create our own grants or scholarship funds to help others , but those grants may only be granted to organizations that are also nonprofit or to persons or events that have met our application criteria and will use the money in-line with the purpose of our organization. We may not sponsor events that are unrelated to our purpose. (For example, to be in the political arena in any way, could jeopardize our nonprofit status.) Our Bylaws have defined our purpose as exclusively charitable and educational focusing on promoting the lever harp and harp music, as well as, fiddle, whistle, guitar, folk dance, etc. and folk historical studies. There is no doubt, after seeing this newsletter and this article, that you will see we are a growing organization with many exciting changes coming from our Board of Directors. I look forward to many more.
