To open Richard Fairclough gives us Thoughts on pianism; on Horszowski; and others There have been published in the music magazines, of late, lists of the “100 best ” One hundred is a very large number of ‘best’ people (who is first; who is last; are there more than a hundred?! or are there fewer!? ) By a quirk of fate, pianist Mieczyslaw Horszowski has not managed to scrape in to one such list, of the hundred best pianists! I have entertained a notion for many years that this artist belongs to a select group of eight keyboard players whose qualities as interpreters, whilst embracing all of music’s structure and laws, leave behind Art and take on a dimension that is extra-musical – they become , as it were, a part of Nature In this rather personal category I have Alfred Cortot , Edwin Fischer, Wanda Landowska (harpsichord), George Enescu ( whose very tiny output of recorded pianism [ to be found on Dante HPC 091/2] shows him to be as haunting and expressive a pianist as he is a violinist), Dinu Lipatti, Rudolf Serkin, Murray Perahia and Mieczyslaw Horszowski.. May I also include here a similar list of string players, Kreisler, Casals, Enescu, Thibaud, Menuhin, Hassid, the Budapest Quartet [ and other ensembles involving Alexander Schneider, such as the New York Quartet ] ).
