    The Mozart we missed
George Enescu's violin playing is the stuff of legend, but he saw himself mainly as a composer. So why do we know so little of his unique music? By Dominic Saunders
    Friday October 25, 2002
    The Guardian
George Enescu, composer George Enescu was the man described by Yehudi Menuhin as "the Absolute by which I judge all others... the most extraordinary human being, the greatest musician and the most formative influence I have ever experienced." Yet Enescu saw himself as first and foremost a composer. Which begs the question: why is his unique and beautiful music not better known? Why did his favourite among his own works, the opera Oedipe, have its first British performance only this summer, over 60 years after it was written? Why has a work as significant as the Piano Quintet Op 29 waited until tonight for its UK premiere? (The Solomon Ensemble, of which I am the pianist, will give it.)

A typical Alaria program offers a well-rounded selection of styles and timbres in spaces admirably suited to this most intimate of musical genres. With a core instrumentation of violin, cello, and piano, the Ensemble features guest artists in unusual programs, providing a truly out-of-the-ordinary concert experience. This is by no means the complete list of famous Romanians, but rather a sampling of the names best known outside Romania's borders. Constantin Brâncusi In 1937 and 1938 Brâncusi created a sculptural ensemble in the Romanian town of Targu Jiu. These three important pieces - "The silent Table", "The Gate of the Kiss", and "The Endless Column" - are based on the idea of a "Temple of Meditation" and are a tribute to the Romanian soldiers who died in World War 1. They show the artist's love of Romanian traditional art. The Endless Column, made through the repetition of superimposed symmetrical elements, is inspired by the pillars of Romanian peasant houses, and invites the viewer to extend it into the sky to infinity. Brâncusi's works attracted many great art collectors and presently, most of them can be seen in museums across the United States. Emil Cioran mil Cioran was one of the most celebrated Romanian writers and philosophers of this century. Born in 1911, he graduated from the University of Bucharest in 1932 and became part of a group of enthusiastic and bright people that profoundly influenced the Romanian culture between the two world wars. In 1937 he earned a grant from the french government and left for Paris. Since 1947 he has only written in french. Among his best known works, "Pe culmile disperarii"("In Dire Despair"1934), "Lacrimi si Sfinti"("Tears and Saints"1937), "Precis de decomposition" ("A Manual on Decomposition"1949), "Exercices d'admiration" ("Exercises of Admiration"1985)

    White Christmas
White Christmas was written by a Jew, Irving Berlin , for a 1942 movie "Holiday Inn" starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire . Berlin's assignment was to write a song about each of the major holidays of the year. He found that writing a song about Christmas was the most challenging. When Bing first heard Berlin audition "White Christmas" in 1941 he reassured Irving that he had created a winner. Bing's preliminary evaluation turned out to be a gross understatement. Bing introduced "White Christmas" to the public on his NBC radio show, the Kraft Music Hall , December 25, 1941. Apparently, no recording of this broadcast survived the War. Bing recorded the song for Decca on May 29, 1942, with the John Scott Trotter Orchestra. "Holiday Inn" was released in August.
