Violinist
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. A violinist is an instrumentalist who plays the violin . The terms fiddler or fiddle player are also used. In classical music the "fiddle" terms are usually somewhat informal or jokey: they are more standard expressions in folk music. I II III Total Szeryng Kremer With 66 versions of the Piano Concerto listed in the current Schwann/Opus - including memorable ones by Bishop-Kovacevich, Fleisher, Istomin, and Moravec - I didn't have any great expectations for this new one. Nor do controversial tempos set this recording apart from such formidable competition; Argerich timings are almost identical to Fleisher's in all three movements. At first I was put off by the diminutive orchestra and the almost painfully comical sound of its wobbling oboes. I'm still not comfortable with the latter, but I find the intimacy of this performance unique and appealing. Liszt once derided this work as a "concerto without piano", but he might have changed his mind if he'd heard the likes of Ms Argerich. Her tremendous expressive range is perfectly suited to the extraordinary demands imposed on her by this mercurial composer - from the arresting drama of the opening bars to poetic grace of II to the joyously thrilling finale. Both concertos were recorded in concert, but the audience was remarkably well behaved. The applause at the end has been excised for those who are bothered by such things. I have the same reservations about the diffuse acoustics of the Stefaniensaal in Graz (where both of these concertos were recorded) that Steve Haller expressed in his review of Harnoncourt's Schumann Symphony disc in the American Record Guide. But don't let that minor problem keep you from obtaining these spectacular performances of two of Schumann's most profound creations.

Hilary Hahn describes the playing technique of Mischa Elman.
GP : How and why did you become involved with this documentary, THE ART OF VIOLIN?
HH
GP
: Did you listen to the recordings of violinists from earlier eras as part of your violin study?
HH
GP
: Are there any particular 20th-century violinists who have influenced you or whose playing you greatly admire?
HH : I was surely most influenced by my two teachers Klara Berkovich in Baltimore, from age five to ten, and Jascha Brodsky in Philadelphia, from age ten to 17. Both were very demanding teachers, but very kind, superb violinists: musicians of style and taste who allowed no technical shortcuts. I was extremely lucky to grow up under their guidance.
GP : Is there anyone who should have been included in the film who wasn't?
HH
GP
: How should the archival material featured in the film be viewed, and what is its value to young artists?
HH : It gives young players and old ones, for that matter an opportunity to see that they are part of a long and very rich tradition of violinists, each of whom played differently, each of whom played effectively. And for those who are studious, it is a great resource for studying the technique of playing the violin. Nearly every school, every body type, every possible manner of holding the violin and bow is represented. GP : The filmmakers touch on the fact that the careers of some child prodigies were cut short due to the pressures of stardom. Is this a concern among contemporary artists like yourself, who have been in the spotlight from such a young age? How do you cope with the rigors of performing and being in the public eye?

On this page you find brief reviews of some of my favourite LP:s. You will not find any discographies, I simply could not afford to buy that many records. One of the big advantages with LP:s is that they are cheap. An other advantage is that the sound quality is better, especially if you like me enjoy listening with headphones. With good ol' monaural recordings you avoid the exaggerated stereo-picture of most stereophonic recordings. Also the sound of LP:s is softer and more immediate. A little surface noise and some scratches you will get used to in due time... So here we go. I have, lazy as I am, simply organised my favourites alfabetically. George Gershwin
Early in life, George Gershwin (1898-1937) frequented the Yiddish theaters on Second Avenue in New York's Lower East Side and was much taken with the music of Joseph Rumshisky. In 1915, Boris Thomashevsky, reigning star of the Yiddish Theater, invited Gershwin and Sholem Secunda to collaborate on a Yiddish operetta. Gershwin was willing, but Secunda refused to join with a young, musically untrained, publishing-house pianist. Later in life, when he was already a successful writer of popular songs, Gershwin signed a contract with the Metropolitan Opera to write an opera based on Ansky's Dybbuk and was ready to go to Europe to study Jewish music, but having learned that the rights to the play had already been given to Ludovico Rocca, he withdrew Gershwin's idiom was the American scene and its music. Beginning with jazz and popular songs, he broadened his talents thematically and musically, until they culminated in his greatest work, the opera Porgy and Bess (1935).
