Ether Game ... Fiona in Flight Local Notes: The Camerata and THSO
For your evening listening pleasure, WFIU is pleased to present a couple of live, concert recordings of two local orchestras, the Camerata and the Terre Haute Symphony. Both showcase the bow and strings of acclaimed violinist and Bloomington native Corey Cerovsek, and one of them features Saint Paul Sunday host Bill McGlaughlin at the podium.
In February, Bill McGlaughlin visited Bloomington to join Corey Cerovsek on stage with the Camerata for Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto in D, Op. 35 and Elgar's "Enigma" Variations. In light of this momentous collaboration of an acclaimed public radio host, an established local orchestra, and a local luminary, WFIU was delighted to acquire an exceptional recording of this concert. You can hear it Monday, April 1, in the weekly slot previously held by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. On ensuant Mondays in April and beyond, tune in at 8 p.m. for the Concertgebouw Orchestra of Amsterdam.
Last November, while WFIU was in the midst of our annual Fund Drive, engineers Michael Paskash and John Shelton took a trip to Terre Haute, where the second-oldest orchestra in Indiana was celebrating its 75th season with a notable presentation. Corey Cerovsek, who last appeared on the Tilson Auditorium stage in 1989 as a child prodigy alongside his famous teacher Josef Gingold, joined the Terre Haute Symphony for a performance of the Sibelius Violin Concerto. Conducted by David Bowden, the performance can be heard on Wednesday, April 3, in the weekly slot previously held by the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. The following Wednesday, WFIU welcomes the Cleveland Orchestra to this Wednesday evening slot.

Winfield, Kan., July 10, 2000-For the third consecutive summer, the connections between mathematics and the arts are being explored in a conference at Southwestern College. Bridges: Mathematical Connections in Art, Music, and Science will be presented at the Winfield campus Friday through Sunday, July 28 to 30. A growing number of scientists, artists, and musicians are realizing that mathematics and the arts are inextricably linked. The goal of the conference, according to Reza Sarhangi, director of the event, is to show these connections. With an increasing world-wide reputation, the conference is attracting participants from Italy, Hungary, Yugoslavia, England, and throughout the United States. Workshops and seminars will be presented by internationally renowned mathematicians, artists, and musicians, including Corey Cerovsek, the young violinist who has appeared with the Wichita Symphony. Cerovsek completed course work for doctorates in both music and mathematics by the time he was 18 years old. His participation will include performances and comments throughout the conference. "The picture people have of math is that it's something not in their everyday life, something they really can't enjoy," Sarhangi explains. "But in nature, as well as in music and art, we see mathematical connections all the time. And we should see these connections in order to have a healthy life."

Winfield, Kansas 67156 USA We have just completed the fourth annual Bridges Conference at Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas, USA. Highlights of the year's conference included the presentation to the college of a sculpture titled "Genesis" by sculptor and conferee Brent Collins. The piece stands in front of the Beech Science Center on the campus. The college owns one other sculpture titled "Pax Mundi" by Collins. This work is located in the foyer of the mathematics department.
Collins, an independent artist, and Carlo Sequin, from the computer department of the University of California at Berkeley, have collaborated on the mathematical implications of Collins' intuitive sculptures. Sequin investigates the mathematics of the sculptures and produces three-dimensional models through a process known as sterolithography. Sequin exhibited some of these models and spoke on the second day of the conference.

BEAUFORT: Great concert programs begin Sunday with Violinist Corey Cerovsek.
Carolina Morning News

The University of South Carolina Beaufort Festival Series, the Lowcountry's premier chamber music program, will begin with a 5 p.m. concert Sunday at the USCB Performing Arts Center. Managed by the Arts Council of Beaufort County, this year marks the sixth full season under the direction of chamber music legend Charles Wadsworth, who also serves as host of the Beaufort concert series.
The chamber music season opens with Wadsworth joining Canadian American violinist Corey Cerovsek on two of the most inspired works of all time, Mozart's Quintet in G Minor and Brahms' monumental String Sextet in G Major. Cerovsek will lead these two brilliant works with Wadsworth playing host to the concert. Cerovsek's graceful mastery of the violin, thoughtful interpretations and dramatic stage presence have earned him a loyal international following in the classical music world. He has performed internationally with the Prague Symphony, the National Symphony Orchestra (Ireland), the Sydney and Melbourne Symphonies (Australia), and the Montpellier Festival Orchestra (France) and in the United States with orchestras of Philadelphia, San Francisco, Cincinnati and Atlanta. He appears regularly at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C., the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and Italy's Spoleto Festival.

[Courtesy Atlanta Symphony Orchestra] M usic seasons don't have titles, but if they did, the three most logical options for the 1998-99 classical music season in Atlanta would be "The Visitors," "The Women," and "The Young Ones." The season certainly offers an unprecedented number of each. As for visitors, Atlanta Symphony Orchestra will host no fewer than 12 guest conductors during the season, the most it has had in its entire history. All eyes will be on the guests, as the ASO board begins its search for a new conductor to replace Yoel Levi in the year 2000, and some of the visitors are among the conductors being considered for the post.
