DUFFY’S TAVERN: A BROADCAST LOG AND HISTORY Compiled and written by Martin Grams, Jr. Walk into any office today, and you may be greeted by the man behind a shiny desk. “Leave us proceed with business.” A mental picture of Ed Gardner immediately flashes across the mind of your true radio listener when this corny bit of speech is used. Which is all well and good as far as the “master of malaprop” is concerned. In fact, Gardner has turned the malapropism into a national institution. But Gardner didn’t become such an influence on the nation’s conversational habits by growing up in a transom, as he might put it. What then, lies behind a man who could turn an English Grammarian’s nightmare into a highly profitable way of life? Eddie Gardner was born Edward Poggenberg on June 29, 1901, in Astoria, Long Island. At the age of fourteen, Gardner secured his first after-school job as a pianist at O’Bryan’s café, a colorful neighborhood bistro that served partly as a model for Duffy’s. Had Ed suspected the significance of this position, things might have been different.

AOL QUILTING COMMUNITY NEWS:
Changing of the Guard Earlier this year, Cathy/QuiltPeace began an NPN article: "Back in 1993 a modem was hooked up to my Apple IIe computer and I signed on to AOL. The only sign of quilting online was one message folder. Soon numbers of us congregated in chat rooms on a regular basis. Through 1994, lots of initiative, work, and dreams from many people resulted in the beginnings of the Quilting Community. " Cathy was with AOL and the Quilting Community from BEFORE the beginning and saw our area grow from a small message board and a database of names to what it has become today! She is part of that group of dedicated quilters that saw a vision, worked hard, followed their dreams, and look what became of that vision, our Quilting Community!

Old Time Radio Moments of the Century
The following article by broadcast historian Elizabeth McLeod is reproduced here with her permission. 100. The Flight Of Alan Shepard 5/5/61 America's entry into the Manned Space Age comes as the OTR Era enters its final year, but millions of Americans follow the flight by means of portable radios, car radios, and other receivers as if to confirm that there'll always be a place for the audio medium. 99. Truth or Consequences: The "Mr. Hush" Contest. Winter 1945-46 A harbinger of things to come, this guess-who-it-is contest ushered in a new era of listener-participation quiz shows that would help change the face of radio in the postwar era. 98. Sherlock Holmes on the Air. 10/20/30 Famed actor William Gillette is the first Holmes to take the network air the first of many to follow. The Holmes story format is ideally-suited for radio, and the program proves to be one of the most successful dramas of the Depression era. 97. Cruise Of The Seth Parker. 1934-35 Radio listeners follow the adventuring Phillips Lord around the world by shortwave an adventure that takes on a harrowing real-life flavor when Lord's schooner is wrecked by a tropical storm. The program's reputation is wrecked as well, when it's revealed that Lord wasn't exactly living up to Seth Parker's Yankee-parson image during his adventure: accompanied by wine, women, and the sort of songs that weren't found in the hymnals back in Jonesport

    http://pages.britishlibrary.net/jeffc/venice.htm
The essence of the fictional Venice is dampness and shadows and death and decay.
Characters in novels set in Venice tend to go there to die, by design or by chance.
Plenty of picturesque funerals with gondola hearses, then, most noticeably in the films.
Deception and the general not-what-they-seemness of things is a not uncommon theme in books about
a city famous for its carnevale and masked intrigue.
Donna Leon is the Magdalen Nabb of Venice - writing fine crime novels about a domesticated detective.
Casanova is a popular source, too, and is the foremost native exponent of Venice's other famous activity - the pursuit of
pleasure. Venice's famous learned courtesans attracted as many visitors as its architecture.
Plenty of art and music amongst the passion and murders.
