I first set foot on my ancestral land of Norway in July 1998. Landing in Oslo, I was greeted by my cousin Jens Moe who whisked me straight away to Telemark to meet the hardangerfele player Tarjei Romtveit at his bucolic home in Vijne where we fiddled for most of the afternoon. Lodgings were in a hytte with a sod roof by a rolling stream in Mjonoy where we resumed the fiddlefest the following day. I had been yearning for a hardangerfele lesson since my childhood, intrigued by the intricately inlaid Norwegian violin with five sympathetically vibrating strings underneath the bridge. Tarjei taught me his favorite tunes, which I preserved on DAT tape for future practice sessions. Jens and I searched for Noekken and other trolls during our midnight hikes in the rustic forest. After several days in Oslo, I made the pilgrimage to the family island near Kragero where I met more cousins, and slept in the same bed as my great uncle Tillman Breiseth had years ago while on vacation from teaching Ibsen at the University of Oslo. I gathered enough Nordic inspiration for the trek to Denmark where I was engaged to play several solo violin recitals at Klint, a community which gathers each summer to study the writings of the Danish cosmologist Martinus. I played the concerts at Klint for an enthusiastic audience.

In the States, she is well known as a champion of contemporary music; I had the honour of experiencing her playing contemporary pieces of great beauty, but also of utter rubbish, and always with her usual flair and sense of duty firmly believing that every composition has to be heard. But she also feels free to tackle any musical style from the classics to jazz and rock - and she always succeeds a hundred per cent. Next to her endless activities as a performer, conductor and composer she is currently the violinist in the Paul Dresher Electro Acoustic Band.

Cassette Ariel View, from producer/pianist Bruce Hanifan and violinist Karen Bentley is a new, superbly recorded selection of tone poems for violin and piano from producer/pianist Bruce Hanifan and violinist Karen Bentley. This CD creates the perfect enviroment for a moment of romance or quiet meditation. This project evolved out of spontaneous improvisations. We were both so inspired by the experiences that we were having as we played that we decided we had to share it with others. So we went into the studio for 2 weeks and came out with Ariel View. We hope you like it.

ELECTRIC DIAMOND By the music they create you'd scarcely believe that this trio of: Stuart Diamond (lyricon), Karen Bentley (violin) and Don Slepian, are American. You see, one is used to a certain feel in synth fronted music from the USA, but Electric Diamond sound so very European. I suppose the reasons for this are the instrumentation and the classical/medieval feel of the music. Very Italian, very Vangelis, very baroque and mysterious. It's unlike anything Don Slepian has done before too, relaxed and restrained without being tedious. The subtleties and richness of the musical textures add to make a music of spontaneous vitality. 'Performed live', with 'no overdubbing or midi-sequencing' it says on the cover - and it's all the better for it.

AUDION MUSIC MAGAZINE (U.K.) ELECTRIC DIAMOND at The ArtMusicCoffeeHouse
Last night, in a small living room in suburban New Jersey, I and seven other invited guests were held spellbound by the three very talented musicians that comprise the group called Electric Diamond. We were joined by possibly hundreds of people throughout the world who enjoyed the concert on a live internet webcast from The ArtMusic Coffeehouse. This was chamber music at its finest, firmly rooted in the past while defining the future, both musically and technically. The ArtMusic Coffeehouse is a new epicenter for up-and-coming talent. Hosted by Don Slepian, each show (Wednesday evenings, 9PM thru 11PM Eastern US Time) features performances and interviews with talented folk, blues, jazz, classical and world music artists. Set before a modest live audience, the concert begins with Don Slepian's keyboard improvisations. It continues to move between interview and live performance, revealing the thoughts and musical personality of the evening's featured artist. Through webcasting, it can be heard virtually anywhere. This is exciting, like live radio used to be.

Tesseract are skilled and eagerly experimental musicians who managed to grab my interest in them right at the very first listen. They're full of that 70s prog passion that enables them to dig out classical influences and blend them with their own flavour. Outshines. Carlos J Tavares, The Space of Carlos Taveres, 23 Jan 1998 Don Tillman's five piece debut is a merger of the soaring intricacies of Kansas with some aspects of fusion (Jean Luc Ponty comes to mind). Don has an impressive array of keyboards; he's adept at switching off between Mellotron and synth to organ, creating a healthy interplay with noted violinist Karen Bentley. The stand out piece is Allegro Assai, an arrangement of a Bach violin concerto which benefits from a strong adaptation without losing the delicacy of the original score.

Twentieth-Century Treasures
You'll find plenty of soul and substance
in these ten hidden gems
by Andrew Palmer

In general, stick to the major record labels if you want interpretations by great artists of the core repertoire; investigate the smaller labels if you’re interested in lesser-known works. There’s no clearer demonstration of this than the clutch of 20th-century music CDs that recently came my way for review. Listening to them confirmed a number of things in my mind: first, that there’s an extraordinary wealth of music out there to explore; second, that CDs give today’s composers and instrumentalists unprecedented opportunities for self-promotion; and last, that the term "20th-century music" incorporates such a variety of styles as to be virtually meaningless. Simplest musical forces first: solo recital discs. In the refreshingly direct booklet note for his CD
