Savannah Morning News Violinist Rachel Barton will perform with the Savannah Symphony Orchestra on Saturday.
Originally scheduled to perform with the SSO on that date was German soprano Susanne Bernhard. According to the SSO, Bernhard has been offered a lead role with a European opera company that conflicted with her scheduled appearance with the orchestra.
"Miss Bernhard is one of the rising young stars of the operatic world in Europe," says the SSO's Executive Director, Paul Chambers. "She was offered a unique opportunity, that is wonderful for her career. Though we are extremely sorry that she will not be appearing with our orchestra, we did not want her contractual obligation here to stand in the way of her very promising future."
Barton, whose previous two appearances with the SSO have been avidly received, will perform Mozart's "Violin Concerto No. 3 in G Major." The orchestra, under the direction of Philip Greenberg, will also perform Mozart's overture to "La Clemenza di Tito" and Tchaikovsky's "Mozartiana" Suite.
The concert will begin at 8 p.m. at the Johnny Mercer Theater. Single Tickets are available and start as low as $15.00.

Press Release: NZ Symphony Orchestra
7 August 02 Rock Violinist Returns For Colourful Concerts With The NZSO The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra presents concerts featuring virtuoso American Violinist Rachel Barton who wowed New Zealand audiences in 2000. Since her NZ debut she has performed her variations on the New Zealand National Anthem as an encore all over America. The first concert, as part of the Great Classics series, has musical colour from Latin America, Rachel Barton with Beethoven's great violin concerto plus Bartok's magnificent showpiece, Concerto for Orchestra. This concert will be performed in Wellington, Hawke's Bay, Hamilton and Auckland, conducted by Roberto Minzuk who will make his New Zealand debut. NZ composer David Farquhar's Evocation is followed by the powerful rhythms and melodic styles of the folk music of north-eastern Brazil in Villa Lobos' work Bachianas Brasileiras - Preludio. Beethoven's Violin Concerto is accepted as one of his most gracious and masterful works, and has become one of the most important works in the violin repertoire. Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra is an accepted masterpiece of twentieth-century orchestral repertoire. It is a mixture of moods, vigorous rhythms, grandeur and a touch of folk dance.

RACHEL BARTON - STRINGENDO: STORMING THE CITADEL (60%) Cacophony, 1998 I'd heard of Ms. Barton, a virtuoso violinist from Chicago, several times
so when I saw this disc it piqued my curiosity. Imagine my surprise when I
turned it over and saw a track list consisting of Metallica, Led Zeppelin,
Megadeth, AC/DC, and other hard rock tunes! I had to check it out. Turns
out Barton and two other accomplished classical musicians, violinist Edgar Gabriel and cellist Brandon Vamos, banged this nearly hour-long album out in less than 10 hours of studio time. It's cool to hear familiar metal tunes like "Cowboys From Hell", "Symphony Of Destruction", "One", and "Fade To Black"and especially "Paranoid" and the "Thunderstruck/"Back In Black" AC/DC medleydone this way. (The other bands covered here are U2, Rush, Soundgarden, and Nirvana, plus renditions of "The Star-Spangled Banner" and classical pieces by Handel and Paganini. There's no doubt the violin

Re: Any comment on Violinist Rachel Barton
Follow Ups Post Followup Music Lane FAQ I have the recording you mention as well as a CD called something like "The Instrument of the Devil" or maybe its "The Devil's Instrument". It has a collection of stuff like "The Devil's Trill", the "Sorcerer's Apprenctice" and other devilish music. It is all well played but is not quite as devilish as it should be. But we in the Chicago are fond of Rachel because she is a local talent we have watched blossom, and because she was involved in a highly publicized tragic incident a few years ago. Rachel was traveling on the commuter train with her violin. When she got off the train, the strap of her violin case got caught in the door. When the train took off, she was dragged along. She lost part of a leg. Her long recovery and subsequent suit of the Metra Transit Authority were major local stories in the news for a long time.

Rachel Barton and Sibbi Bernhardsson to Perform Little-Known Works and Celebrated Masterpieces, Wednesday, March 1, 8 P.M., in Kulas Recital Hall Story by Claire Chase RELATED The Program Two former students of Almita and Roland Vamos - violinist Rachel Barton and Sibbi Berhardsson , visiting assistant instructor of violin - will perform their first-ever duo violin recital on Wednesday, March 1, 8 p.m., in Kulas Recital Hall. The program will feature a combination of little-known repertoire and celebrated masterpieces, including works for two violins by Schnittke, Ysaye, Telemann, Peter Jaffe, Mark O'Connor and Prokofiev. The performance is free and open to the public. "This program runs through the entire emotional spectrum, from light to heavy and intensely dramatic to comical," remarks Bernhardsson. "We will begin with Schnittke's Praeludium, which was written as a memory of Shostakovich, and has a very dark, funeral march undertone. This work can be played by either two violins or by one violin with tape. For this reason the piece has a somewhat mechanical aspect, but it's very engaging. Eugene Ysaye was most famous for his six solo violin works, and this duo sonata is like the solo sonatas in its contrasts ranging from impressionistic Ravel-esque textures to intensely romantic, thick emotional qualities. It's a beautiful piece, very typical Ysaye, full of lyricism.
