Nanotechnology in Manufacturing
Ever since I read K. Eric Drexler's Engines of Creation I'd been interested in nanotechnology and followed the relevant literature while trying to figure out, as is my wont, how to make a buck out of it. As one of the designers of Xanadu and an ardent supporter of the project, Eric became acquainted with Autodesk when we invested in Xanadu in 1988. When Eric saw a demo of HyperChem at a conference, he immediately realised that the fit between Autodesk and Hypercube, Inc., developers of HyperChem, was potentially very good. When Eric and Chris Peterson spoke to me about this opportunity, I finally saw not only an opportunity for Autodesk to establish itself in the scientific modeling market, but also a way to position ourselves to benefit from the advent of nanotechnology, if and when it emerged, for surely one could not design atomically-precise structures without a molecular CAD system, which is precisely what a molecular modeling package is. In early 1989, I prepared this talk about the consequences of nanotechnology to help tilt the balance in favour of the HyperChem deal. The talk was delivered at the Autodesk technology forum on May 10, 1990, before an audience which included Eric Drexler, Chris Peterson, and Neil Ostlund, founder and president of HyperCube, the designer of HyperChem.

Nano consortium now a for-profit partnership focusing on pharma

"We want to serve as the glue between established pharmaceutical companies and the idea guys at biotech device makers." – Ellery Buchanan, NJNC Ellery Buchanan of the New Jersey Nanotechnology Consortium subscribes to the theory that "vision without dollars is hallucination." The consortium's executive vice president, was referring to the roughly $20 million a year in operating capital NJNC is seeking. The dollars would help the consortium see a little more clearly as it evolves into a for-profit limited partnership.
Nanoledge builds on nanotube knowledge to make macro material
Nanoledge was created two years ago by three material engineers from a research lab in the south of France with an agenda that sounded simple: They wanted to industrialize the process of carbon nanotube production. Now, the company wants to take that process to the next level by developing a range of nanotube-based microfibers. The results could lead to advances in textiles and ultrastrong polymers.

What We're Talkin' About
Oil conservation has gone nuts! Literally. Researchers at the United Arab Emirates University in Al-Ain and Helwan University in Cairo successfully tested a fuel mixture for diesel engines that contained Jojoba oil. The Jojoba fuel buned cleaner, and more efficiently than diesel. The engines that ran on the nut fuel even seemed to run more quietly than when deisel was used. This offers some amount of hope for those countries whose economies are dependant upon the steadily dwindling supply of petroleum. In fact, cultivation of the Jojoba plant is on the rise. Farmers hope to sell the nut oil to fuel producers. At present, quantity is the only issue holding Jojoba oil back from becoming a global alternative fuel source. The infrastructure is not yet in place to grow enough Jojoba nuts to meet demand. Read more here

Transformation Stories List
This list includes books, short stories, movies, web sites, and other works that feature physical shapeshifting. All methods of transformation are covered; werewolves and other animal shapeshifters, nanotechnology, magic spells, etc. Most of the List's material is science fiction, fantasy, or horror; but other genres are welcome as well. Each book has been rated as to how much of a role transformation plays in it, as well as what types of shapechanges occur; so if you're only interested in, say, books about magic-induced lycanthropy, you can search for just those sorts of books or stories. Nearly 200 contributors have provided information for the List; my sincere thanks to all of them. If you know of any shapeshifting-related works that aren't on the List, I'd greatly appreciate your letting me know about them; please see the for details. About the List

Atomically precise manipulation of matter is becoming increasingly common in laboratories around the world. As this control moves into aerospace systems, huge improvements in computer high-strength low-weight materials for aircraft and launch vehicles, and other systems are expected. Studies suggest that it may be possible to build: and active materials which sense their environment and react intelligently. All of NASA's enterprises should benefit significantly from molecular nanotechnology. Although the time may be measured in decades and the precise path to molecular nanotechnology is unclear, all paths (diamondoid, fullerene, self-assembly, biomolecular, etc.) will require very substantial computation.
Goals
  • Develop Ames' computational molecular nanotechnology capabilities
  • Design and computationally test atomically precise electronic, mechanical and other components

Overview

Nanotechnology, the science and technology of precisely controlling the structure of matter at the molecular level, is widely viewed as the most significant technological frontier currently being explored. Materials and devices at the nanoscale (a nanometer is one billionth of one meter) hold vast promise for innovation in virtually every industry and public endeavor including health, electronics, transportation, the environment and national security, and has been heralded as "the next industrial revolution." At the forefront of this new scientific frontier, the Institute for Nanotechnology was established as an umbrella organization for the multimillion dollar nanotechnology research efforts at Northwestern University. The role of the Institute is to support meaningful efforts in nanotechnology, house state-of-the-art nanomaterials characterization facilities, and nucleate individual and group efforts aimed at addressing and solving key problems in nanotechnology. As part of this effort, a $34 million, 40,000 square foot state-of-the-art

    Building with Atoms

    A New Industrial Revolution

    Lots More Information!
In the early 20th century, Henry Ford built a car manufacturing plant on a 2,000-acre tract of land along the Rouge River in Michigan. Built to mass-produce automobiles more efficiently, the Rouge housed the equipment for developing each phase of a car, including blast furnaces , a steel mill and a glass plant. More than 90 miles of railroad track and conveyor belts kept Ford's car assembly line running. The Rouge model was lauded as the most efficient method of production at a time when bigger meant better. Nanogears like these may replace current manufacturing processes. The size of Ford's assembly plant would look strange to those born and raised in the 21st century. In the next 50 years, machines will get increasingly smaller so small that thousands of these tiny machines would fit into the period at the end of this sentence. Within a few decades, we will use these nanomachines to manufacture consumer goods at the molecular level, piecing together one atom or molecule at a time to make baseballs

PIEZOELECTRIC MOTORS FOR NANOENGINEERING AND METROLOGY
    GR/K89818/01

Nanotechnology Group - Advanced Materials Department 1 Background/Context Piezoelectric motors use a ferroelectric ceramic element to excite ultrasonic vibrations of an appropriate type in a stator structure. The elliptical movements of the stator are converted into the movement of a slider pressed into frictional contact with the stator. The consequent movement can either be rotational or linear depending on the design of the structure. Their invention is usually attributed to Barth and Vishnevsky et al and they have been extensively studied over the last 20 years particularly since Sashida’s invention of the travelling wave ultrasonic motor (TWUM) and there are some excellent reviews on the subject . The TWUM remains the most popular type, but other designs have been demonstrated using, for example, Langevin-type bar vibrators with torsional elements
