64. Ultrasound Artefacts
UltrasoundLab, Dept. of biomedical engineering Physics, University of Vienna
http://www.bmtp.akh-wien.ac.at/people/kollch1/artefakt.html
Ultrasound Artefacts
In diagnostic ultrasound "artefact" is used for image phenomenons, that represent the real anatomical structure not correctly. An artefact can be defined as false, multiple or misleading information introduced by the imaging system or by interaction of ultrasound with the adjacent tissue. But in the case of medical diagnosis its appearance can be of diagnostic advantage also !
In general image artefacts can occur in each medical ultrasound. Then an interpretation of the image is complicated and can eliminate the structural information of objects looking for. Artefacts do occur due to some simple assumptions of the ultrasound propagation after generating in an imaging system. Without these assumptions developing of ultrasound imaging systems could not have been done. These assumptions are :
  • Propagation of ultrasound is straight ahead.
The ultrasound beam is infinite thin in its lateral and thickness direction.
In tissue the sound velocity is homogeneous and constant (around 1540 m/s).
The detected echo is originated by the last generated sound pulse.

Feel a need to build better systems and reduce inefficiencies? Do you get a kick out of solving problems? Are you uncertain you're meant for front line medicine? This website is for you! I have to start off by saying that I am not a biomedical engineer or biomedical physicist or an engineer. Other than the required courses I took at school, I really have no knowledge of engineering. What I do know about are the things I see in my work which need improving, and those things require biomedical engineering (BME).

Biomedical Engineering - UC Irvine
Welcome to the Department of Biomedical Engineering. The growth of this discipline at UCI has been very rapid beginning with the formation of the Center for Biomedical Engineering in 1998. The Center was funded by a generous $3 million Development Award from the Whitaker Foundation to accelerate the growth of the formal educational and research opportunities in the Henry Samueli School of Engineering . In 2002, three major milestones were achieved including the formation of the Department of Biomedical Engineering, two undergraduate degree programs , and the expansion of the graduate program leading to the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in biomedical engineering. The department offers a stimulating array of research and training opportunities with world-renowned researchers. The focus areas for the M.S. and Ph.D. include three technology areas of biomedical photonics/optoelectronics, biomedical nano- and microscale systems/fabrication, and biomedical computation/modeling. Included in these opportunities are major campus resources at the Beckman Laser Institute (biophotonics) and the Integrated Nanosystems Research Facility (INRF, nano-fabrication and mircrofabrication). Additional research partnerships are available in the
