Wonders of Florida: Weedon Island
Whispers and shadows surround visitors to Weedon Island Preserve in southern Pinellas County. Wind your way along the 1.27 miles of boardwalk, and suddenly you may hear the gentle swoosh of paddles softly plying the murky waters. A canoe tip appears. A Timucuan Indian returning home with the day's shellfish harvest? No. Today it is a father and son exploring the 1,046 mangrove-filled acres in fiberglass kayaks. Still, you think, "One day many, many years ago. . . ." Weedon Island is a living story of Florida's past, present and future. Like the mangroves whose gnarled roots weave their way across the preserve, our state's rich and colorful history intertwines with native plants and animals to create an intricate tapestry portraying the wonders of Florida.
Lights, camera, action!

Cultures flow together to make a powwow
American Indian tribes share with each other and the public at large at Withlacoochee River Park.

Wavoya Mahsetky, a Comanche from St. Cloud, performs a jingle dress dance at the powwow. DADE CITY Ixtlixochitl Salenas was out to dispel a myth: that her people are extinct. "In books, they speak of the Aztecs in the past tense. There are native people from North America to South America," the 27-year-old Mexico City resident told an audience of about 100 who sat circled around her. Salenas is a member of the Aztec Fire Dancers. The dancers are a family of five, who performed Friday at the Native American Powwow at Withlacoochee River Park for the first time. Nearly 6,000 people are expected to attend the event, which runs Friday through Sunday.

http://www.bced.gov.bc.ca/irp/sp512/7ucs.htm
Grade 7
  • Understanding Culture and Society
  • Prescribed Learning Outcomes It is expected that students will:
    • identify elements of spanish-speaking cultures that are similar to their own, including sports, pastimes, and entertainment
    • examine both contemporary and traditional cultural characteristics of Spain
To view the prescribed learning outcomes for Understanding Culture and Society in other grades click on an icon below.
Suggested Instructional Strategies Students should have opportunities in class to explore aspects of their family and community traditions in order to seek commonalities among various cultures. They also begin to explore and, if possible, experience aspects of the Spanish-speaking world, Spain in particular.
    • On a monthly basis, assign students in groups to take turns maintaining a classroom bulletin board that focusses on the Spanish-speaking world. Suggest that groups display newspaper and magazine articles they collect from home, the library, or other sources. At the end of each month, have the assigned group present a synopsis of the posted items.
    • Have students generate questions they can use to interview Spanish-speaking people in the community about similarities between their own and their respondents' cultures. Ask each student to collect the information and display it on a chart.

IUN's campus community encompasses a very diversified faculty and student body. Each ethnicity represented on IUN's campus includes a background of traditions and customs. This month there will be a chance for all to experience one of the most significant elements of all cultures, customary foods. On November 19th, from 11 to 1 p.m., "Taste the World," a lunch dedicated to ethnic foods, will be served in Savannah to the campus and community for free. Included in the lunch will be foods that are traditional to the cultures of many of IUN's campus community. All ethnic foods will be donated for the lunch, and That Little Café will provide drinks for no charge. Cochran estimates between fifty and one hundred dishes to be presented at "Taste the World," all food being prepared by IUN faculty and students. The informal lunch will also include live guitar music and some different ethnic tunes being played. This day of ethnic food tasting was the idea of Justice Cochran, a student at IUN Her idea came about as the enjoyment of offering something new for the campus that includes food. "I can't think of anything more fun than trying new food," stated Cochran. "It'll be a blast, free food and free music!" The Women's Student Association is also lending their hand by sponsoring the event.

Education Educating children about other cultures By JAMES RAGLAND / The Dallas Morning News These days, Clarence Glover must walk a fine line. As the director of multicultural education for the Dallas Independent School District, Mr. Glover usually is at the forefront of special efforts to help educate children about other cultures. At a time when some critics are blasting programs with a racial emphasis, from affirmative action to Hispanic Heritage Month, Mr. Glover works to emphasize cultural differences without offending those who reject a special focus on one group. February is Black History Month, a time when this school district and others will be highlighting African-American achievements. And if history is any indication, Mr. Glover will be asked repeatedly why he and others are putting such an emphasis on race. His response will be the same: "Again, it's the wrong question, because it has always been emphasized. We've been emphasizing race in this country for 300 years, and now we want to stop when we're trying to affirm other cultures?
