Online Resources Texts: Philosophy of Sport Used Books: Philosophy of Sport Know of a Resource? ... Life Through the Earholes of Our Youth by Ken Burger (Editor), David Lissy (Photographer). Beyond the scores: Ken Burger's first book is about real life! In between all the games and stuff, every now and then Ken has written an article about the experiences he had with sports when he was a kid. A great deal of it concerns the struggles we all go through and where sports fits into our lives as young people... From the Author: The focus for this book emerged as I pored over a decade's worth of sports columns-more than 200 a year-and discovered that the ones I liked most reflected personal thoughts and feelings. A lot of it has to do with my youth and my kids- the personal stuff I've written about over the years. It's about real life. Some of the columns are about my own kids. Some deal with alcoholism and other things I've personally gone through. I've had people tell me that the only reason they pick up the sports page is to read a column that will draw them into something beyond the scores. I look at writing as a journey through all this stuff.

Resource Guide in:
The philosophy of sport is concerned with the conceptual analysis and interrogation of key ideas and issues of sports and related practices. At its most general level, it is concerned with articulating the nature and purposes of sport. The philosophy of sport not only gathers insights from the various fields of philosophy as they open up our appreciation of sports practices and institutions, but also generates substantive and comprehensive views of sport itself. The philosophy of sport is never fixed: its methods demand an inherently self-critical conception of intellectual activity; one that challenges its own preconceptions and guiding principles continuously both as to the nature and purposes of philosophy and of sports.
Being a form of philosophical discourse, the philosophy of sport embodies the formal and contextual character of the parent discipline: philosophy. Unlike the biomedical sciences of sport, philosophers (just like social scientists and humanities scholars) generate research that is overtly reflective of its non-theory neutrality. Intellectual progress can be made in philosophy and the philosophy of sport without presupposing an idea of linear development - or at least largely shared view of cumulative, commensurable, knowledge - that is assumed within the natural or biomedical sciences of sport.

Dr Mike McNamee About Dr Mike McNamee Mike is Reader in Applied Philosophy at the University of Gloucestershire. He is the immediate past President of the International Association for the Philosophy of Sport, has published widely on the subject and has developed curricula in the area for a number of UK higher education institutions. Aim To share good practice in teaching of the philosophy of sport in part by establishing a national organisation, through which a network can be developed to continue debates and encourage professionalism in the area. Context The Philosophy of Sport is an area which has developed particularly over the last five years or so and has become increasingly popular, not only at modular/unit level, but also at course level. Many lecturers teaching this area are not trained philosophers and there is therefore a need to develop a forum for the sharing of professional and curriculum design issues. Subject Specialist Activities Within his Subject Specialist role, Mike intends to bring together academic staff who teach the philosophy of sport, encouraging the sharing of good practice and raising the professional status of the sub-discipline. In particular, he will be:

Philosophy 151 - Philosophy of Sport T. J. Berry
Syllabus This course examines philosophical issues that arise in sport. The course will be divided into three parts. In the first part, we will consider the nature of sport and how we can demarcate sport from other human pursuits. Do high altitude mountaineering, Olympic figure skating, and track and field share some feature(s) that an activity like chess lacks? The second part will concern ethical issues that arise in sport. Is winning everything in sport? Ought one to seek competitive advantage by violating the rules? Ought one to accept competitive advantage resulting from errors by judging officials? In the third part, we will consider issues concerning the integration of sport into society. Ought there to be gender equity in sport, and if so, how ought we to judge that such equity has been achieved? What does the academic mission of institutions of higher education imply about the proper role of athletics within those institutions?

The philosophy of sport
Sport, is it just a past-time or is it a way of life? Does it really embody everything that we believe in, like honesty, mateship and reward for effort, or is it just a legitimate way for bullies to exert their will over smaller, less aggressive players.
You won't find the answers to any of those questions here, but then you never really expected them either (once again my psychic ability shines through). What you will find is a collection of wonderful quotes that just confirms what we've all known all along. You don't need to be smart to be good at sport, and you certainly don't require brains to be a commentator.
Spencer's running across field calling out, 'come inside me, come inside me
Murray Mexted
Baseball player Mickey Rivers, on his relationship with George Steinbrenner and Billy Martin :"Me and George and Billy are two of a kind." Murray Mexted "Spencer's running across field calling out, 'come inside me, come inside me.'" Murray Mexted "I can tell you it's a magnificent sensation when the gap opens up like that and you just burst right through."
