Windsurfing in the Baltimore / Washington DC Area This is a collection of my (and contributing windsurfers') favorite windsurfing locations in the Baltimore / Washington DC area. In particular, fees tend to change. The time estimates given on this page use the I95 / Capital beltway intersection as the origin (the top of the beltway). The speed I drive is proportional to the speed of the wind at the site I'm going to, so your mileage may vary. The shore break is bigger there and you can sail almost right in on the beach on a 10 footer and do a bottom turn. The equipment is top knotch. The latest Open Ocean tri fin boards and North Wave sails all rigged and ready to go in the beach hut. If you want to switch down or up you just come in and click one off and click one on. The accomodations are great and include a home cooked breakfast. Mountain bikes(Kona) and kayaks are availible for the none sailing times and the area has great snorkeling. Los Barrilles is the main area. In main season, this is 50% sailable, 3-4 day cycle. On very windy days, tough for intermediates as swell is 3-7 feet with slightly difficult shorebreak. Swelly conditions without breaking waves. Not my kind of place on non-windy days, dry barren desert not very close to anywhere. In December, weather was cool, needed medium steamer to stay comfortable.

The thrills it offers ar visceral, plentiful and unbelievably fun. For several months a year, it's a winter's worth of adventure, yet it's probably safer than driving. Ice sailing has a long and quirky history, but until we came along, it was always done in boats. "Hard water windsurfers" is what the ice boaters call us. They sit in boats, we stand on boards. Our version of ice sailing is windsurfing's winter sister: a small windsurfing rig is mounted on a board that rides on blades. A remarkably simple invention for the amount of bliss it delivers.
