What is wheelchair tennis? Around the Academy:
Top players compete in international tournaments
Wheelchair tennis follows the same rules as able-bodied tennis. Except the ball is allowed to bounce twice. The second bounce can be either inside or outside the court boundaries. This is one of the reasons wheelchair tennis has become so popular - people in a chair can easily play against able-bodied friends. The sport really took off in 1976. Meet Britain's number one wheelchair player Jayant Mistry (top) is one of the best players in the world
People in wheelchairs had played before. But it was only when disabled American Brad Parks first hit a tennis ball that he realised the potential of this new sport. Brad and his friend Jeff Minnenbraker went to great lengths to set up exhibition matches and get publicity. It's popularity grew and in 1988 eight countries came together to form the International Wheelchair Tennis Federation. The game also grew very quickly in Belgium.

Jayant's the giant of wheelchair tennis Around the Academy:
Jayant Mistry is Great Britain's number one wheelchair tennis player ranked seventh in the world. Watch my story in video Broadband Modem He's been one of the world's leading players in the sport for over 10 years. He has won two singles titles and five doubles titles so far in 2002. Q: How old were you when you discovered wheelchair tennis? A: I started playing wheelchair tennis when I was 19-years-old. However, I had been playing wheelchair basketball since I was 13, so I had plenty of wheelchair skills. Q: Have you been in a wheelchair all your life? A: I was born with Spina Bifida, so I was born disabled. Q: When did you first realise you had a talent for wheelchair tennis? A: After a couple of years of playing the sport and entering competitions, I began to beat people who'd been playing the game a lot longer than me. Talk about tennis on our message boards But then I went to my first international tournament and lost to someone who I never should have lost to, which brings you back down to earth again.

Get Five DVDs for $.49 each. Join now. Tell me when this page is updated USTA Middle States Sectional Wheelchair Tennis Clay Court Championships 2001 ADVANTAGE…the wind! Twenty five wheelchair athletes endured the cold temperatures and windy conditions to compete in the USTA Middle States Sectional Wheelchair Tennis Clay Court Championships held at the DuPont Country Club in Wilmington on September 28-30, 2001. Athletes started out their weekend by playing matches on Friday afternoon and attending a fantastic banquet on Friday evening. Players, their guests and volunteers enjoyed delicious food, a rockin’ band and an impressive auction! For the past 10 years, the Wheelchair Tennis Program of Delaware (WTP) and Larry Hampton of the DuPont Country Club have partnered to present this exciting and unique event. Players traveled from the surrounding states of MD, NJ, NY, PA, VA and WV to compete. Only one player, Janet Lardear, of Wilmington represented the First State! Janet, who plays in the “Women’s B” Division, played both singles and doubles and she and her partner Cory Moyer (PA) placed first in their division’s doubles play. Janet and Cory played their last match of the tournament on Sunday afternoon when weather conditions included rain drops and spectators included only a few diehard fans – all of which made the match that much more rewarding as they defeated the team of Natalie Guard (PA) and Duane Spencer (MD). There are several divisions in wheelchair tennis beginning with the “open” or most advanced players. Other divisions include the “A”, “B” and “C or beginner” divisions. There is also a “quad” division for players who are considered quadriplegics and have more limited use of their upper bodies. Those of you who have volunteered before or who have come out to watch the event also know that the divisions may include both males and females so it is not unusual to see men and women playing together as a doubles team or playing against each other on opposing sides of the court. All rules and regulations are the same for wheelchair players as they are for stand up players, except that the wheelchair player is allowed two bounces…the first bounce must be in the court, the second bounce can be anywhere. Two bounces is not considered an advantage, but an acceptable way of modifying the game to allow for the additional movement of the wheelchair.
