USET Paving Way For U.S. Vaulters at World Equestrian Games
Back Gladstone, New Jersey –April 1, 2002–The United States Equestrian Team’s (USET) preparations for sending squads to compete in World Championships in seven disciplines at the 2002 World Equestrian Games (WEG) in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain includes unprecedented efforts on behalf of U.S. vaulters. In January, Adrienne Stang and Emma Drinker of the American Vaulting Association (AVA) took part in a USET fact-finding trip to Jerez to prepare for this year’s Games. Stang and Drinker worked closely with Sally Ike, the USET’s Director of Vaulting Activities, and joined the Team’s discipline directors of Dressage, Driving, Endurance, Eventing, Reining and Show Jumping in touring the venues and surrounding areas of the upcoming World Equestrian Games. This was the first time vaulting representatives have ever had the opportunity to visit a World Equestrian Games venue beforehand, meet with the Organizing Committee, and be proactive about planning for hotels, travel, etc. “The vaulting community is excited about the support the USET is giving to our sport,” said J. Ashton Moore, American Vaulting Association Co-Founder and Technical Advisor and USET Vice President of Vaulting. “Not only will our athletes attend the Games better prepared than ever before, but they will do so with a tremendous feeling of unity based on being part of a genuine “team” comprising athletes from all seven USET international disciplines.”

What is Vaulting?
Vaulting requires a steady reliable horse and a trainer who controls the horse so that the vaulters can perform various static and dynamic exercises, either individually, in pairs or in threes. The training develops coordination and a sense of rhythm, timing, balance, style and confidence on the horse. Who can vault?
Vaulting is a sport for all ages, just as a fun activity or as a world accepted sport. People with disabilities also practise vaulting and integrated teams are encouraged. Competitve Vaulting
Competitions cater for all levels of ability and are held at regular intervals. Vaulting offers great opportunity for international youth exchange. Several vaulters have already represented Australia at an international level in Europe and America. How do you start?
At first exercises are practised on a barrel, then on a horse at walk, and as you get better at the canter. In Australia there are vaulting groups and clubs associated with the EFA, RDA and PCA. That means that you don't have to have your own horse, which makes vaulting a relatively inexpensive horse sport. For vaulting you need gymnastic outfits and soft shoes with non-slip soles. Beginners may wear a helmet.

Vaulting THE STUDENTS ARE LEAPING AROUND AT WWU S tudents at William Woods University are leaping through the air and doing cartwheels. No, it's not because of Spring Break but rather a sport called Vaulting which is gymnastics and dance on the back of a moving horse. Vaulting is an international level sport that came to WWU with a student from Arkansas, Jennifer Murphy (pictured below). As a freshman she asked if she could form a vaulting club and with a faculty member sponsor Jean Kraus, the group started instructing interested students in the fundamentals.
The gymnastics aspect of the sport is very similar to what is done in the Olympics, where the gymnasts do floor exercises and balance beam work. Only vaulters do iton the back of a horse. The fundamentals are taught on a barrel which allows the vaulter to learn the basic positions they will be using before moving on to the horse. They learn to do the correct movements at a walk, and when proficient and secure will continue to build their skills asthey move up to trot and canter work. Standing upright on the back of a cantering horse is one of the ultimate goals. Vaulting teaches balance, rhythm, strength, timing and athletic ability and any rider can benefit from this work. The interest in this sport has grown at WWU from the club to actual classes for college credit. WWU is the first university in the country to have vaulting in its curriculum. WWU has hosted competitions and the students have also traveled to California and Rhode Island to compete. Two of the WWU vaulters have qualified at Bronze Medal Level and are working towards their Silver Medal levels.

country. Many equestrian training programs include vaulting to supplementinstruction in other equestrian disciplines. Vaulting
http://www.uset.com/html/vaulting.cfm
VAULTING Vaulting was added to the USET's stable of international competition in late 2001, and is the newest of the USET's disciplines. It is an international discipline in which athletes perform gymnastic and dance movements on the back of their equine partner, who is cantering on the lunge line. Support for athletes representing the United States at the World Equestrian Games in Jerez de la Frontera, Spain is the primary focus of the 2002 USET Vaulting Program. HISTORY Vaulting can be traced to ancient times. Because of their use in battle and during the hunt, many cultures developed mounts and dismounts from the moving horse. Stone paintings from the Bronze Age in South Scandinavia, 1500 BC, depict horses with people standing on them. Contests arose as these cultures refined their talents. Vaulting or artistic riding was born and included in the Classical Olympic Games. The name vaulting derives from the French "La Voltige", which was first used in the Renaissance where the sport was part of the education provided to knights and noblemen. In the 1920 Olympic Games in Antwerp, cavalry officers competed in an event called Artistic Riding. Modern vaulting was developed in postwar Germany as a means of introducing children to equestrian sports. In 1950, rules for competition were developed and a national school for training horses, coaches, and riders was established in Hohenhameln, Germany.

Vaulting - Gold, Silver, and Bronze in Rome
American Vaulters Brought Home the Medals
by Carole Dwinell For the American vaulters who represented the United States at the World Equestrian Games... the spotlight came to life as they brought home the only medals for the US from Rome. All from California, Devon Maitozo of Cupertino is the men's World Champion, Kerith Lemon (Soquel) the women's Silver Medalist and the Extension Team from Woodside captured the Bronze Team medal. The result of many years of training paid off in October for the American Vaulters! Right. That's great. But for many Americans, vaulting is not a household word. It's a horse sport, right? but what really is it? Where does it come from? What good is it? It's gymnastics on horseback, figure skating without the ice, dancing with the wind and with your horse. It is harmony, courage, flexibility, and creativity and history. It is also one of the safest of all the equestrian disciplines. While the above description comes slightly short of sounding safe, vaulting has been a basic skill from the first time a man saw the useful possibility that presented itself when one could ride a horse instead of chase it and eat it. Almost every form of cavalry had games on horseback to increase the riding skills of its horsemen. Even in the early history of this country, it was the Native Americans, particularly the Plains people, who were greatly admired for their skill on horseback. This skill, in part, comes from play, from giving up the reins and taking up the challenge of getting the true feel of a horse in motion from all sorts of positions, without the benefit of a mounting block, without the horse even standing still, without the distractions of having to "go" in some direction. When the Roman armies switched from chariots to riding, vaulting became important in their training. Following World War II the German parents saw vaulting as a way to get their children back into the equestrian arena despite the fact that there were so very few horses remaining standing on all four feet in their country.

Vaulting is more than leotards and hair braids, that’s for sure! Sunny but windy days greeted the vaulters attending the 9 th NSW Vaulting Championships, held in Sydney at RDA Box Hill. As always, there was a great competitive atmosphere, certainly not lacking in fun and enjoyment for all concerned. A great turnout attended the Championships, over 80 vaulters including about 20 German visitors. The Germans were visiting as part of the Cultural Exchange – a program where Australian and German teams visit each other every few years. The team had been staying in Canberra and Sydney. This meant we could have an international judge for the championships – Ludwigshafen coach Iris Schlobach, which was wonderful. The vaulters ranged from raw novices at their first start to experienced world-class competitors. Teams and horses came from Canberra, Hunter Valley, Southern Highlands, as well as local Sydney teams. The German visitors were all placed on horses loaned by the Australian clubs. left: the combined team from Germany performing their freestyle on Jaimie in the D team event, which they won.
