    Welcome !! Training : Wednesdays 2-4 pm
    Venue : Peffermill Playing Fields
Shinty is Scotland's national sport and the University Club is one of the oldest in the Sports Union - founded in 1890. The game has sometimes been described as 'hockey without rules' but the lack of restrictions in shinty results in a hard, fast and skilful game with a big enjoyment factor. At Edinburgh, the Shinty Club offers a unique chance to represent the University as well as playing National League Shinty in the South Division 2. As a smaller Club we offer a great team spirit both on and off the park and we ensure that everyone gets involved in the action in one way or another. On the social front we are the organisers of the legendary Shinty Club ceilidhs and are great believers in celebrations or commiserations depending on the result! We are always looking for new players so if you are a current player who has moved to Edinburgh or a complete novice who wants to learn more about the game, turn up at any training session. You won't regret it and we'd be glad to see you.

HOME ATHLETICS BADMINTON BASKETBALL ... FIRST SHINTY : INTRODUCTION Introduction Shinty is an indigenous game to Scotland which offers all participants a fast, exciting and fluid game to play. It has been enjoyed by many people for generations and will do so for many years to come. First Shinty First Shinty is a modified version of the adult game of shinty and is designed for primary-aged children. It was developed by the Camanachd Association along with Team Sport Scotland and has been designed to promote the teaching and playing of shinty at primary school level. The game is played by two teams of six players and provides opportunities for children to develop a wide range of skills specific to the game as well as skills that are general to all games playing. First Shinty is about acquiring basic skills and developing an understanding of the game through fun and enjoyment. It has been developed specially for children to enable them to learn the basic skills and rules and tactics of games playing. When comparing it to the adult version of shinty, first shinty has obvious benefits for children in that it uses smaller playing areas, simplified rules, small sided teams and modified, less threatening equipment. First shinty is particularly useful in primary school in that it gives children the opportunity to have more time on the ball and so gives them more time to develop and practice skills. The game can be played where there are limited playing areas and can be played indoors. Boys can play alongside girls and the nature of the game encourages fun and enjoyment in a safe environment.

SHINTY IN SCOTLAND
It is recognised that Scotland is one of the world warrior nations. Although renowned as one of the friendliest and welcoming of countries, the Scots love nothing more than watching, or taking part in, a good going "stramash" (fight).
If there was ever a game that helped local clansman develop their levels of courage, speed, stamina and weapon handling skills, it is the game of shinty. The mental and physical strength required to play shinty has stood the Highlander in good stead in battle.
In saying this however, it is important to recognise that, although opposing players may appear to be knocking lumps out of one another during the game, off the field some of the strongest friendships in sport have been developed.
It was not until the last quarter of the eighteen hundreds that shinty really began to get itself organised with the many local interpretations of the rules of play being formalised.
The earliest documented rules of play were recorded by the Aberdeen University Shinty Club who in 1861 became the first constituted shinty club in Scotland. The Camanachd Association was formally instituted in 1893 with the first final for a national trophy - the Camanachd Cup - taking place in 1896.
Shinty in Scotland is divided into two areas, the North and the South. Nineteen clubs are established in each of these areas. The league system has a Premier Division of eight teams. There are three other divisions ion the North and two in the South. Division two in the South is divided into West and East sections.
