History
During the 1960's Mr. Sam Jacks was the Director of Parks and Recreation in North Bay, Ontario. He dedicated a great deal of time and enthusiasm to developing youth activities and one of his particular interests was to develop an on-ice skating game for females. He named the fledgeling game "ringette" and the first-ever ringette game was played in the winter of 1963-64 in the Northern Ontario town of Espanola. Ringette has never looked back. 1960's 1970's 1980's 1990's ... Ringette Statistics
  • Sam Jacks invents what we know today as Ringette. Jacks, the late Director of Parks and Recreation for the City of North Bay, Ontario, Canada, introduces the game to the Northern Ontario Directors Municipal Recreation Association. Red McCarthy, Recreation Director for Espanola, is asked to experiment with the basic set of Ringette rules by the Northern Ontario Directors of Municipal Recreation.

Suffice to say, this is the most exciting sport played in Canada today. A team sport for girls and women, on ice, on skates. If you thought that guy on page 6, my other links page, could skate and play his game, just drop into your local arena and be prepared to be amazed. Do I sound a little prejudiced? Well, I am!... But I promise you will be thrilled with the speed and technical ability of the athletes you watch, no matter what their age.

1. What is Ringette?
The Sport of Ringette was developed in 1963 in North Bay, Ontario, by the late Mr. Sam Jacks. Originally designed to be a unique winter team sport for girls and an alternative to hockey, Ringette has evolved into a fast paced, exciting sport that combines the speed of hockey with the strategy of basketball. The first game played in Espanola, Ontario, was nothing like the sport of today. top
2. Some of the Rules.
Ringette is played on any standard hockey rink. Five skaters and a goalie are on the ice for each team, unless of course there are penalties being served. The object is to score goals on the net of your opponent. How you do that, however, is where Ringette becomes unique. A straight stick, similar to a hockey stick with no blade, is used to pass an 8" hollow rubber ring between team mates. Play is started by a Free Pass, similar to the start of a soccer game. The ring is placed in the half of the center ice free pass circle closest to the visitors' goalie. On the referee's whistle, the player "taking the free pass" has five seconds to pass the ring to a team mate... and the game is on! Any stoppages in play will result in a free pass to re-start the game, usually in the nearest free pass circle. Some defensive free passes are replaced by a "goaltender ring", again, like a soccer goalie throwing in the ball.

What is Ringette? Ringette is a unique winter ice sport played primarily by females, but is open to all. This non-contact sport has players using a straight stick and a hollow rubber ring. Ringette rules require individuals to pass over each blue line, thus encouraging team play. Ringette is now played across Canada, including the Northwest Territories. Ringette boasts a total registration of 50,000 players across Canada and is played internationally in Estonia, Finland, Sweden and the United States. The sport has also been introduced to Japan, Australia, Czechoslovakia and Switzerland. History The sport of ringette was introduced to Saskatchewan in 1973 by Mr. Bob Gotts of Regina, with the Ringette Association of Saskatchewan established in 1976. With This Ring Ringette History Highlights The Game As with any sport, the rules that govern play can be extensive. The following is a list of the major playing rules:
  • Fast paced, non-contact ice sport The game can be played on either indoor or outdoor rinks or inside a gym Teams consist of between seven and eighteen players, with five skaters and one goaltender allowed on the ice at one time. In certain situations, however, the goaltender can be pulled and replaced on the ice by an extra skater.

This page is officially closed. BCRA is producing a new and improved website that hopefully will be updated more often than this one. I was finding it very hard to obtain updated information, so I have turned over this site to someone in the Lower Mainland to maintain.
The new address will be posted on here for those pages that haven't updated their links. I had fun working with this page and I hope that the new one will be even better!!.
The bcringette@yahoo.com email address is also closed. If you would like to contact BCRA please email Rick Daly at bcringette@telus.net . The Yahoo! address will no longer be checked. Please update your address books.
