What's it all about, this Real Tennis

Real tennis is played in an enclosed court 110ft long x 40ft wide x 30ft high, around 3 sides are lean-to’s (penthouses) 7ft wide, the lower edges are 7 ft from the floor and the upper edge 10ft.
The net is across the centre 5ft high at each end
and 3ft high in the middle. The walls of the penthouses have various openings.
The game is most often viewed from the Dedans, a large netted opening and for the purpose of this explanation, it is assumed that you are looking at the court from the Dedans.
Both ends of the court have names - on this side of the net is the service side because service is always given from this end, while the other side is
called the Hazard side. As you look through the Dedans you see to the left the penthouse, with a series of netted openings called galleries (each of these has a name). At the hazard end there is a buttress on the right hand or mail wall, which juts out at an angle - this is the Tambour.
You will also notice a square wooden panel in the far right corner called the Grille.

Real Tennis
Slow Motion
In this version of tennis, the middle two balls go straight up and down, so they look more like a real tennis net. It's a variation of right middle left . Start with the hand holding two balls. Throw one ball straight up the middle, and throw the next ball from the same hand over the top . While that ball is in the air, throw the ball from the other hand straight up. Catch the over the top ball and immediately throw it over the top in the other direction.

Other Information about Real Tennis “Tennis, the King of Games and the Game of Kings, is to its devotees a pleasure that can never fail and a memory that can never be forgotten. In antiquity, in dignity, in the skill required for its mastery, in its inexhaustible repertoire and variety of strokes, in the qualities, both mental and physical, that it demands, it holds a place that is unique, and, though it may never be widely known, it will always be held in highest esteem.”
So begins the Preface to A History of Tennis Real Tennis' in the 1890's to refer to the older game. At the end of the 20th century began another surge of interest in real tennis, as evidenced by new court building and restorations of disused courts. Real Tennis cricket Probably the most historic, entertaining and oldest racquet game on earth. Often considered a combination of squash and chess but essentially a cerebral indulgence on an indoor court resembling the cloisters of a medieval monastery. Romsey opened in 1999 as only the 39th club in the world. Not exactly a common or high profile sport, but fascinating to watch. For a modest court fee, one may experience hitting a ball made of tape (that barely bounces) with a bent racquet, off the floor, walls and penthouse roof. Surrounding the court are dining rooms, banquet hall, lounges, The Hare and Spaniel Wine Bar, change rooms and the member's own lounge, bar and billiards room. Making a real racquet
    Words by Oliver Rowland
A game of tennis where brain beats brawn
REAL tennis was a hit with medieval monks and kings and is taking off again as a modern sport. Known as royal tennis in Australia, Real Tennis is the prototype of the modern game of lawn tennis, and is described by fans as a mixture between tennis, squash and chess.
Real tennis is said to have started in medieval monasteries in France and Italy, when monks would hit a ball around the cloisters using their hands.
As it grew in popularity rules became more standardised, and the monks enjoyed it so much a spoilsport Pope decided to ban it.
By the 14th century the game had moved from the monasteries into noblemen's castles and was popular with royalty throughout the Tudor and Stuart periods.
In fact Henry VIII was such a fan that many of his financial problems were caused by huge wagers on Real Tennis games, and James I died because of it. Trying to escape assassins by hiding down a drain, he found it blocked with real tennis balls.
It game fell from grace in the 18th century, but has picked up again since Victorian times and about 10,000 people now play worldwide.

    How To Play Real Tennis!
We are going to introduce you to the game of tennis, the way it's supposed to be played.
Our aim is to teach you the rules that people all over the world use for "Real Tennis" and not Formal Tennis. You need at least one player for modern tennis.
This one player needs a ball, a bat or racket, and a wall to play against. They can now (the one player) hit the ball to the wall.
The ball bounces off the wall and then returns back to the player who then hits the ball back into the wall and so on and so on...
Until somebody finally wins the game.
Playing tennis like this will greatly increase your confidence and improve your ability to hit the ball and 'get along' with your opponent. You will find that after a while you will come to know your opponents moves and you will easily anticipate your opponents tricks, but you should always be careful because your opponent could pull-something-out-of-the-bag and surprise you.
This is a real danger and you should practise with your opponent often until you know their every move before you move onto two player tennis. This may have been the way tennis was first played back in the dark ages when people could play tennis against a cave - the reference to 'dark' comes from the fact that Thomas Edison hadn't been born yet and so the light bulb hadn't been invented so the caves were dark.
