Paralympics

NATIONAL ABILITY CENTER HAS FANTASTIC PARALYMPICS
The 2002 Winter Paralympic Games proved to be the most successful ever, with the National Ability Center right in the thick of it. Not only did the USA win the gold in Sledge Hockey, but the US Alpine and Nordic Ski Teams captured a total of 40 medals. Among the medallists was the National Ability Center's own Lacey Heward, who took home two bronze medals in the Giant Slalom and Super-G, in her very first Paralympics.
As a member of the National Ability Center Disabled Ski Team, Heward finished up with a fabulous 2002 Paralympic Winter Games at the Snow Basin Venue. This local Utahan was more than elated with her results and even had the opportunity to sing on stage with Patti LaBelle at the closing ceremonies.
The National Ability Center also sponsored the Chilean Paralympic Team. The Ability Center was able to help with securing funding and organizing the team. In addition, Julie Minihan, the Ability Center's Disabled Ski Team Head Coach participated as the coach for the Chilean Alpine Ski Team.
The Ability Center also had the honor of teaching Phil Cravens, President of the International Paralympic Committee, his very first mono-ski lesson. Cravens, a wheel chair basketball player, plans to continue skiing with the Ability Center in the future.

John Lennon You will also want to read the followup article about my experiences as a viewer of the 2000 Paralympics: Raven lent me a portable TV a few weeks ago. She set it up on a stool at the foot of my bed and armed me with a TV guide. Watching the Olympics was nice ... I guess all the media people around must have been somewhat distracting, but for those of us who only ever get to watch it was like having a window into another world. It didn't mater that all I could do was lie in bed and watch - Olympic athletes are meant to be special. That sort of achievement is out of reach to 99.99% of the population anyway. There's a cultural rule saying we're allowed to enjoy it without feeling like we should be able to do that too. Then along come the Paralympics ... They're smaller and less media covered, although ABC TV has fitted in an hour or two most days and played all of the opening ceremony. I've been watching it, I don't know why. It makes me feel bad, but I want to watch it.

Life is what happens when you're busy making other plans.
John Lennon I wrote this whilst the 2000 Paralympics were on in Sydney, Australia. You will also want to read the original article about my experiences as a viewer of the 1996 Paralympics: Four years ago, when the Paralympics were on it Atlanta, USA, I wrote about my feelings as I watched the disabled athletes perform. Last month the Paralympics returned, and this time just 1000km from where I live. I dearly wanted to get to see the competition and ceremonies live, but was too sick to travel, so I had to be content with my television again. What's changed? This time, ABC TV - our local national broadcaster - put much more of the Paralympics on television. The entire opening and closing ceremonies were broadcast live, and several hours every day of competition were on TV. My local radio station also broadcast updates every half an hour so I was kept up to date with what was going on. I think this reflects a general shift in community attitudes - the general public now considers disability and the activities of disabled people more important than it did four years ago. I've changed too. Four years ago I had been sick for only 2 years and was right on the edge between feeling like "a sick person" (which feels like a temporary state) and feeling like "a disabled person" (which feels like a more permanent state). I've been sick for six years now, and with no end in sight I definitely feel like "a disabled person". So watching the paralympics wasn't such a challenge to my identity this time. I could calmly look and think, "Yes, I'm somewhat like that" and be proud of them - instead of being challenged.

97. 2.4m In The Paralympics
paralympics. The following specifications have been drawn up for the 2.4 to be usedin the paralympics and all boats must comply with these specifications.
http://www.sailingsource.com/24metre/paralympics.htm
Paralympics Why the 2.4 Metre?
This exciting, sophisticated single-handed boat has been used by sailors of all ages and abilities since the mid 80's. Although predominately in Europe it is now built in North America and Australia.
Owing to it's design, where the sailor sits facing forward and all controls are led back to the cockpit, it was soon realised that the boat was particularly suitable for use by disabled sailors. At the same time it attracts top class able-bodied helmsmen.
This was one of the reasons why ISAF (then IYRU ) agreed that the 2.4 should be recognised as an International Class in1992.
The boat was demonstrated during the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona and it was hoped that a single-handed class would be accepted for the 1996 Paralympics in Atlanta. However, owing to restrictions in the overall numbers of athletes in the Atlanta games, this did not occur.
Initially, only three person crew boats were to be included in the Sydney Paralympics but the authorities were eventually persuaded by the International Foundation for Disabled Sailing in conjunction with the International 2.4 Class Association to include a single handed class.
The primary reason for this was that the 2.4 could be sailed competitively by almost anyone, irrespective of their disability. Where as crew boats ( Sonars) effectively exclude some people with severe disabilities owing to the size of the boat and the physical requirements needed to sail them.
