Shadow Cliffs Open Water Aquatic Team (SOWAT)
If you are interested in open water swimming with a group, SOWAT is available year round. Shadow Cliffs is an East Bay Regional Park located in Pleasanton. The facility is actually a small lake that was once a quarry. The group is friendly and flexible. There is no coaching or training, just open water swimming. SOWAT has had an open water swim team since 1982; the group includes serious masters swimmers, open water aficionados, many triathletes (some Ironman competitors) and people who just enjoy open water swimming. It is a great chance to get comfortable swimming in open water conditions, get out of the chlorine, and not have to do flip turns every 30 seconds. We have a mile, mile and a half, and two
mile course. Swimming hours Daybreak 6:00 AM to 10:00 AM every day. Monday, Wednesday, and Thursdays at 6:00 PM to dusk, June through mid October. Water temperature Low to mid 70's from June and October, mid to high 70's July, August, and September. Typical "swims"

Open Water Swimming
Introduction
In my many years in this sport, I have never seen any reasonably complete article in the magazines dealing with open water swimming (they seem to rehash the same basic stuff every few years). A lot of them talk about how to draft, or tell you to look up every few strokes to stay on course, but very few seem to deal with the subject in much detail.
So last summer, I started to gather my thoughts and experiences on the subject. I finally got back to it just now. Rather than deal just with racing in open water, I have tried to deal
with both swimming for fun and racing.
I welcome all comments! (Did I forget anything? Am I completely off base? Are there any other tips that you have found particularly helpful?) Enjoy!
(who has plenty of experience as an involuntary bodysurfer)
Open Water
Visibility of less than 2 feet. No stripe to follow on the bottom. Unseen creatures lurking under you. Seen creatures kicking you and flailing their arms all around you. Choppy water trying to splash in your mouth on every breath. Cold water. Flotsam and jetsam....
I can't understand why anyone would be concerned about open water.

69. More On Open Water Swimming
Swimming in open water is not always a pleasurable experience. There isa world of difference between swimming in pools and open water.
http://www.inform.umd.edu/studentorg/mtri/Swimming/moreon.htm
From the May issue of Inside Tri, by Liz LaFemina: Tips For Making A Splash In Open-Water Swims Swimming in open water is not always a pleasurable experience. Add 500 or so other swimmers at the start of a triathlon and the calm waters can become a war zone of thrashing limbs. At the Science of Speed conference held last year before the Hawaii Ironman in Kona, Greg Welch, Julie Moss and Dave Scott gave some helpful tips for preparing for what can be a harrowing experience. Although their comments were tailored toward the Ironman, they can guide you to a better performance in any swim leg you dive into. There is a world of difference between swimming in pools and open water. The nature, feel and conditions of each are rarely, if ever, similar. Therefore, while much of your swim strength can be acquired in a pool, Welch suggests including open water swims in your preparation. Open-water practice- anywhere from a mile to race distance- will help you acquire the feel and familiarity necessary for success. Locate Landmarks Pick Your Position The best way to handle the potentially violent nature of overlapping swimmers is to acquire and maintain a proper position. At the start of the race, secure a spot on the outside of the swim course. This will help you find space in the often-crowded school of swimmers. This is especially important when the swarm of jabbing limbs becomes a bit too fierce.
