Introduction
In my many years in this sport, I have never seen any reasonably complete article in the magazines dealing with open water swimming (they seem to rehash the same basic stuff every few years). A lot of them talk about how to draft, or tell you to look up every few strokes to stay on course, but very few seem to deal with the subject in much detail. So last summer, I started to gather my thoughts and experiences on the subject. I finally got back to it just now. Rather than deal just with racing in open water, I have tried to deal with both swimming for fun and racing. I welcome all comments ! (Did I forget anything? Am I completely off base? Are there any other tips that you have found particularly helpful?) Enjoy!

Visibility of less than 2 feet. No stripe to follow on the bottom. Unseen creatures lurking under you. Seen creatures kicking you and flailing their arms all around you. Choppy water trying to splash in your mouth on every breath. Cold water. Flotsam and jetsam....

Facts, history, and links about open water swimming.
http://www.didyouknow.cd/aroundtheworld/swimming.htm
Around the world Who will be the first to swim around the world?
In a remarkable feat of endurance, 31-year Benoit Lecomte became the first man to swim across the Atlantic ocean, 1998.
The 1920s was the Golden Age of Sports and Johnny Weissmuller was its golden swimmer. He set world records in 67 different events before trading swimming for even greater fame as Hollywood's most durable Tarzan.
Gertrude Ederle - in 1926 she became the first woman to swim across the English Channel.
Another great sportsman - 13-year old Kutraleeswaraan swam the six waterways in one calendar year, earning him a place in the Guinness Book of World Records. Farfetched it may seem but when Benoit Lecomte swam across the Atlantic in 1998 he introduced a new global sports challenge: the first to swim around the world. The long history of swimming is depicted in mosaics from early Middle Eastern civilisations and at Pompeii. Although swimming was not included in the ancient Olympic Games, the Greeks practised the sport, holding it in high regard. Plato considered a man who didn't know how to swim uneducated. Julius Caesar and Charlemagne were known as great swimmers, and Louis XI frequently swam in the Seine. There have been other swimmers whose talents brought them international fame: Johnny Weissmuller, Gertrude Ederle, Mark Spitz. And then there was

The Hawaiians Gods and Godesses apparently conspired to encourage everyone to learn how to swim TODAY, because Hilo was flooded by 35" of rain, and Pahala set a new Hawaii State record after recording 36-inches of rain within 24-consecutive hours! Male contestants swam in the rain, after which many ran for shelter, or donned protective head gear like this Mancunian swimmer from England. The Australians watched as Pele obviously intervened to hold off the rain whilst the women prepared for their 10k event. Despite the banner advertisement, Russians got down to business without the coffee.

Open Water Swimming
Welcome to my swimming pages, at present very much under construction as, during the coming Summer (wot? In Britain) I hope to visit, photograph and otherwise describe outdoor swimming spots around the North West of England. All sites featured are open to the public and accessible at least on foot or bike via public rights-of-way. However, swimming outdoors, especially unsupervised (arrgh! shock!! horror!!!) seems to be an activity regarded in some quarters to be on a par with child molestation, so first - a bit of a rant. Is open water swimming a safe, healthy pastime, or a foolhardy, dangerous exercise as is claimed by the rabid control freaks of the Safety Gestapo? According to well-qualified opinion we humans, with our large feet, partially webbed hands and lack of body hair, are an aquatic species. We are built for the water and evolved that way long before swimming pools were invented. Humans are naturally attracted to water which explains why most holidays are taken at the beach, be that by sea or lake. Swimming, outdoors and in pools, is the most popular participant sport. Yet according to the Safety Gestapo anyone entering open water has as as much as a 1 in 4 chance of drowning, as well as running a risk of catching just about every disease in the book (and probably some new ones that aren't!). Utter nonsense. Just to put the record straight here is an extract from the hatchmere.com
