Originally, the idea was to have Peep Jousting here. "What's Peep Jousting?" you might ask. Well, you know what a Peep is, right? They're disgusting chick-shaped marshmallows that come out around Easter. Since it wasn't Easter when I made this page, I couldn't buy any to take pictures of, so you'll have to check out the graphics I stole from Just Born's Official Marshmallow Peeps Website . That's a box of the nasty, yellow critters to the left.
Anyhow, if you place Peeps in a microwave and set it for one or two minutes, they'll swell up. Actually, any generic marshmallow will do this, but it's much more fun if they're chicken-shaped. To have a Peep Joust, simply take two Peeps, stick a toothpick in each of them, place them facing each other in a microwave and fire that sucker up. Soon enough, the two Peeps will swell and one will stab the other one with its toothpick jousting lance. Sound fun, doesn't it? Problem number one: It was October. As I mentioned earlier, there were no Peeps in sight and it wouldn't be Easter for quite a while. It was, however, nearing Halloween and there were other themed marshmallows available from the fine people at

Chivalry, honor, and the English knight (originally "serving boy") came to have the same meaning. Knighthood and chivalry, its ethos and ideals, acquired a mystique that combined aristocratic qualities, Christian virtues, and the courtly love of women.
The ideal knight should be a man of prowess, loyalty, and generosity like the heroes of epic poetry. In the eyes of the church, he should put his sword at the service of the poor and needy and especially of the Crusades to the Holy Land.
From southern France came the idea that a knight should serve a lady (often promised or married to another) whom he loved passionately, if hopelessly. The French chansons de geste and romances reflect this chivalric ethos. Chivalry flowered in the 13th century, spreading throughout Europe and the Holy Land and dominating much of the popular literature. Like any other profession, that of the knight was learned by apprenticeship.
At about the age of seven a boy was sent to live in a knight's household; there he was a page until, roughly, his puberty, when he became an esquire and served his master in the field as well as practicing in the exercise of arms.

The metaphorical use of the phrase "going for the brass ring" has a little of that longshot buried in it.

Jousting With the Dark Knight of Creationism
    By Mark Morgan
Certainly this interview with Tom Willis is the most disturbing thing I've read this year. How can this man claim to be trained in logic and then say the things he does? I'm not afraid of the big bad fundamentalist. I've criticized the woman with the highest IQ in the world. After that, a mere peasant like Tom Willis holds no fear for me.
    Complexity, thy name is deceit
Out of the starting gate, Willis makes a recurring fallacious creationist argument, the "watchmaker" argument. The standard form of this is if you find a watch, you cannot reasonably argue that it was created at random. Willis uses a combexplain how a comb could be created at random. I can't, and evolutionary biologists don't. They say that the randomness of nature is constrained by the forces of natural selection. Take the hemoglobin molecule, complex as all hell. Surely the odds against that are too high to have evolved at random. Well, no. First, hemoglobin did not evolve at random. It evolved in the framework of natural selection. Second, what's so special about hemoglobin? Maybe there are ten million different molecules that could do hemoglobin's job; if there is a on in ten million chance of any of them evolving by random, then one will. My point is not that I know anything about how hemoglobin evolves; my point is that neither does Tom Willis. Nothing in evolution is completely random; all of evolution happens within the constraints of environment and survival of the fittest. It's an argument with flawed logic. Technically, it is called a

    97. Jousting In The Kingdom Of Acre
jousting in The Kingdom of Acre. The European mounted knight for show. InMSR we recreate the jousting of the fourteenth century. This period
    http://www.kingdomofacre.org/jousting.html
Jousting in The Kingdom of Acre The European mounted knight of the middle ages was the most devastating military weapon to date As time progressed and the role of the knight in warfare gradually decreased, the tournament became less and less training for war and more of a spectacle. The armor became specialized, the rules more defined, the activities became more theatrical and less violent. Romantic scenarios involving courtly love and displays of knightly virtue came to dominate the tournament until eventually it was more of a circus by the 1500's. By then the role of the mounted knight as the preeminent military unit had passed, gunpowder and new infantry tactics having made them ineffectual. Professional soldiers were commonplace and the nobility no longer needed to be involved in actual combat. Since missile weapons and organized footmen could defeat anyone regardless of armor, rank, or wealth, the knight was no longer a viable weapon and the tournament finally lost all connection with military training and was merely for show. In MSR we recreate the jousting of the fourteenth century. This period had more pomp and ceremony than the earlier jousts, but had not gotten too far away from real combat. They had not yet developed extensive specialized steel plate defenses and still wore heraldic surcoats, which gives us more flexibility in the armor we choose to wear. Full steel plate armor suitable for the joust is very expensive and actually more dangerous to joust, the extra weight and clumsiness making it easier to fall off and harder to control the fall and more strain on joints when you impact.

JOUSTING: Barber, Richard. The Reign of Chivalry . p. 193-198. Jousting was a medieval competition tournament, usually fought to the death of the loser. The participants were knights who wore protective armor, as did their horses. Jousting tournaments were a popular but expensive sport with expert horsemen competing with lances and swords. The idea of the joust was to be the last man to stay on his horse, while knocking all the other men off of theirs. Beside armor for protection, the man carried a large, heavy shield. The knights rode their horses opposite each other in a large arena. People sat or stood all around the arena, cheering for their favorite knight. The lady of the joust usually dropped her scarf as a signal to begin the game, and on this signal two men rode towards each other holding their jousting lances in front of them. When they met in the center of the courtyard, each man tried to knock the other one off of his horse. Chivalry, or rules of honor, was always to be followed. If no one fell, they turned their horses around and tried over and over again until only one man was still standing or riding. He was declared the winner. The joust continued tournament-style until there was only one final winner, and then a feast was held in his honor.
