Snail mail Call us joust (jowst: noun) A fight between mounted knights wearing armor and using lances. (verb) Take part in a joust; tilt. New Webster's Dictionary of the English Language
The words "Tournament" and "joust" are often used indiscriminately; strictly speaking "joust" involves single combat between two horsemen, whereas "Tournament" refers to the "melee" or mounted combat between bodies of armored knights outside of warfare. "Tournament" is also used to describe the overall event or series of events at which such combat takes place. The origin of the word tournament is not fully known, though it has been suggested that it derives from the fact that medieval knights rode at the quintain, and often at one another, 'par tour' or in turns. The Tournament, in its earliest form, was basically a mounted sport whereby participants prepared themselves for war. It may have derived from the Roman 'Game of Troy' (ludus Troiae) or from similar war games practiced by Germanic tribes of the same period, in which mock battles were fought.

23. Avalon
The jousting tournament to decide who is the most fearless knight can begin. Well armoured, the fighters enter the arena.

A tournament game
Publisher's Description:
Fanfares sound. The ground vibrates under horses hooves. The jousting tournament to decide who is the most fearless knight can begin. Well armoured, the fighters enter the arena. Who will be the last to still have a complete set of weaponry, and therefore able to decide the tournament for himself? And who will be in possession of the most gold at the end of the fighting, and be the real victor of the jousting?
Box info:
Designer : Marco Silles Published : 1978 Publisher : Fun Connection Players : 3 to 6 Ages : 8+ Playing time : 45 min
Trev says:
Players collect and trade weapons and armour for use in jousts during the tournament, the aim being to make the most money during the fighting, whether or not you win the fights. The pieces are attractive enough. The weakest part of this game is that it has been designed such that ties are common during jousts. The ties are resolved by what the designer obviously thought was a good idea (a large part of the rules is given over it), but essentially boils down to a form of Snap! The rest of the game could be promising, but I'll need to try it a few more times to see how play develops.

Annual Jousting Tournament
Held Annually on the Last Saturday in August
Jousting has been a sport in Maryland since the 17th century. In 1962 it was declared the official state sport. The knights of Calvert County meet at high noon to compete on the lists at historic Christ Church on Broomes Island Road. No, it's not a bloody battle. The knights must catch three small rings on their lance while travelling at a full gallop. Charge, Sir Knight! And, occasionally, Charge, Fair Maid! The Calvert County Joust is an equal opportunity tournament.
There is even a children's competition. (This was a practice session.)
The History of The Last Saturday in August by Anne Whisman, Editor, Reprinted from an article in Calvert County Life, August 1980 It's always hot. It almost never rains. It's the day they hold the annual Calvert County Jousting Tournament on the grounds of Christ Church in Port Republic. Dinner used to cost 50 cents (at least in 1937). In 1938 it jumped to 60 cents. By 1941 it was 75 cents. Four years ago (1976) it was $4. This year (1980) they are wavering between $6 and $8. There used to be a ball afterward. There is no ball

Milords, Ladies and gentlemen, due to the unfortunate, not to say fatal, events at Jedes, which led to the cancellation of the Dagrath Tournament, it has been decreed by his majesty Miginath, King of Kaldor, Earl of Olokand, Protector of the People (etc.,etc.) that henceforth all tournaments within this kingdom will be held under the rules known as the Laranian Joust. The next joust will start as soon as enough knights have registered. For your information, below is a list of the knights competing in last years Tournaments. For reasons of space, knights competing in the Royal Chelebin Tournament of Chivalry have not been included, unless they also took part in another of last seasons Tournaments. Entries from all of these knights will of course be welcome. Name Settlement Kingdom Tourneys

background... We (Jeff and Christine) both started our interest in draft horses through jousting. Christine started in 1985, breaking and training draft horses to joust, and Jeff came along shortly thereafter as a jouster. Of all the draft breeds we worked with, the English Shire Horse was the one we fell in love with and chose to breed. Here are some pictures of those jousting days, way back when... We used to make our living by performing at various events nationwide. Jeff is riding a lovely Sorrel Percheron mare named Polly. Yes, sorrel Percherons exist, but are rare. Jeff doesn't regularly joust anymore but does appear in shows occasionally. An animated picture of "A bad day for Jeff"

THE DEVIL'S HORSEMEN
JOUSTING
AT WARWICK CASTLE
A number of special events are organised at Warwick Castle throughout the year. This page shows some scenes of the Jousting at a Medieval Festival weekend, featuring action by The Devils Horsemen jousting team. The jousting tournament at Warwick Castle takes place on an island in the River Avon, which is joined to the Castle by a bridge. As the scheduled time for the performance approaches, visitors at the castle gather on the island, around the jousting field. The Knights approach on horseback, crossing the bridge over the Avon from the castle. The Knights are each led into the arena by Vinrac, a rebel maiden (Simone Griffiths). The Knights present themselves for the joust. The Knight in red colours is Sir Bors (Butch Andrews). The Knight in green colours is Igor (Roger Moore). The Knight in yellow colours is Prince Hal (Michael Nicholson). The Moor is Azim (Emanuel Lafon). Last to enter the arena is the outlawed Black Knight (Spencer Ratcliffe), who rides into the arena without submitting to the conventional formalities. The Black Knight rides Gidrat.
