About Law Enforcement Youth Camp The Law Enforcement Youth Camp, or LEYC as it is commonly referred to, is a camp for kids who range in age from nine to eleven years old. The camp was originally started in 1974 by the Tacoma Police Department and was held at Camp Joshua Taylor on the Key Peninsula, near Gig Harbor, Washington.
Sunset Lake Camp! Over the years LEYC has grown in size, and been held at different summer camps around the South Puget Sound area. It has been held the last eleven years at Sunset Lake Camp near Wilkeson, Washington. Currently the camp is run by men and women Deputy Sheriff's, Police Officers, Civilian Employees, and Military Police Officers from various Law Enforcement Agencies around the South Puget Sound area. The purpose of the camp is to give disadvantaged boys and girls a chance to attend a summer camp that they might not be able to attend otherwise. This includes kids from single parent families, kids from low-income families, and kids at risk to become offenders later in their young lives. It gives kids a chance to interact with police officers, and have positive experiences with the police. The camp is held every August. Each officer takes three to four kids to camp and is their camp counselor for the week. The kids who attend camp are chosen by the individual officers through a variety of ways. Hundreds of letters are received from area elementary schools indicating the names of kids who they believe will benefit from this camp. Some of the officers interview the kids and their parent(s) and make a final selection. Other officers contact area elementary schools on their own and talk to the teachers and school social workers. Once again, several candidates are selected. The officers interview the kids and their parent(s) and work with the schools to make a final selection.

Recreational value Free-flowing rivers and lakes behind dams offer recreational opportunities. The types of recreational activities offered by lakes and rivers are different from one another, and therefore the removal of a dam will change the character of the recreational activities available. Members of your community may favor or oppose dam removal on the basis of the possible changes in recreational opportunities. Further, recreation-based businesses depend on the character of the recreational opportunities in the surrounding area. For the purposes of this module, recreation has been split into two different categories for consideration. The first category is recreation by community members, that is, a valuation of the recreational benefits that each option has for residents of your community. The second category is the economic benefit gained from tourists from outside the community. The valuation process for each of these is different.

Impoundments provide several pond and lake recreational activities. Many impoundments in Wisconsin offer excellent sport-fishing opportunities. The fisheries found in impoundments are generally warm- and cool- water fisheries supporting smallmouth and largemouth bass, northern pike, muskellunge, walleye, panfish, and many others. Impoundments also offer boating opportunities, such as motorboating, rowboating, sailing and flatwater canoeing and kayaking. Impoundments can be used for swimming and innertubing. Larger impoundments offer waterskiing, kneeboarding, and wakeboarding. Impoundments that freeze over in the winter provide opportunities for ice fishing, ice skating and hockey. Lakes may support waterfowl habitat, providing hunting opportunities.

Water, Water Everywhere- and There's Always Something to Do!
When you take a canoe trip or enjoy the view from a Louisiana bridge, you're enjoying more than a simple physical attribute of the state. You're celebrating the primary natural force that built the soil of Louisiana and provided its spectacular array of outdoor pleasures.
First, of course, there's the Mississippi River, and there are many ways to enjoy the great river. Mississippi River cruises departing from New Orleans last from a couple of hours to a couple of weeks, depending on your preference. Ferries and bridges offer sweeping views for motorists. Historic Rivertown in Kenner, several River Road plantations, and restaurants and hotels in New Orleans and Baton Rouge provide access to adjacent levees for river viewing.
The other major rivers of the state are the Sabine, Red, Calcasieu, Ouachita, Atchafalaya and Pearl rivers. The Twin City Queen in Monroe cruises on the Ouachita; a reservoir on the Sabine has become Louisiana's most famous bass fishing hole; and the Whiskey Chitto, Pearl and Calcasieu provide some of the state's most popular canoe trips.

CWU TO HOST 'HONOR THE EARTH' EVENT Native American environmental activist Winona LaDuke and the Indigo Girls team up next month on a four-state tour to take a message of alternative energy and cultural preservation to college campuses, including Central Washington University. "Honor the Earth Tour" is a speaking and performance event aimed at educating college students and the general public on current issues related to Native American environmental activism and the development of wind power on Native lands, in particular. It will also include visits to Native American reservations implementing wind power and other alternative energy projects in their communities. The tour will stop at CWU Monday, April 14 for a 7:30 p.m. performance in Nicholson Pavilion. Tickets are $5 for CWU students and $10 for general admission and are available at the Samuelson Union Building (SUB) ticket counter, Jerrol's, Off the Record in Yakima and Avalon Music in Wenatchee. Each campus presentation will feature talks by LaDuke, and Amy Ray and Emily Saliers of the Indigo Girls, followed by a 45-minute acoustic performance by the Grammy-award winning duo. The innovative "living-room style" tour combines discussion and music to generate political dialogue and action concerning the country's energy future.

Here's the outlook for the slopes this winter
By ANNIE PIERCE RUSUNEN, for pdxguide.com There's a reason snowriders can handle the Northwest's damp, dreary days better than other city dwellers can.
A sprinkling of rain in town typically means snow is dusting the mountains with its magical flakes.
While ski area operators can never be sure just what the winter months will bring, climatologists are predicting a wet winter for us. That could be promising for area ski resorts, if temperatures fall. Otherwise, riders could be in for some occasional slope-side drizzle.
Timberline Lodge is one of the landmark ski areas on the West Coast.
Mt. Hood Meadows

Meadows' terrain park, Park Place, returns this season after a three-year hiatus. Resort operators expect the jumps, tables and rails to lure snowboarders and skiers alike to the park, beneath the Hood River Express high-speed quad chairlift. Meadows also offers a beginner terrain park called The Zoo and an intermediate course called South Park.
Skiers looking to improve their slope-side skills can attend advanced clinics offered by four-time Olympian A.J. Kitt. The two-day clinics are designed for upper level intermediates and expert skiers and include six hours of instruction each day with video analysis for $300 (includes lift tickets, coaching and dinner).

Follow Ups Post Followup Pajarito Mountain Message Board FAQ Posted by BrownSugar (.)(.) on July 17, 2002 at 09:13:42: In Reply to: Re: More justification for snow making posted by Peter on June 28, 2002 at 10:06:58: There will never be any snowmaking at Pajarito Mountain.
First, there's not enough water available. Figure with a minimum of 6 guns running at roughly 75gpm each, run those guns all night, 7 nights a week. And thats just for a barely adequate system with only 6 guns! Taos and angel fire have al least a small creek and/or several wells which run non-stop to fill a 1,000,000 gallon tank, which gets sucked dry nightly. Also, as for your fire protection pipe dream, decide now which run to install your 6 guns on and maybe, just maybe you can save that one run in a fire. whee! Also who has the water rights we will need for the million or so gallons a night? Also, forget the idea of piping up city water (as someone once proposed), unless we just hit the lottery! Second reason Pajarito will never have any snowmaking is money, or rather lack thereof. Having worked in the ski industry for 15 years I can tell you man made snow is quite costly. Besides the cost of the components like: Snow hose, snow guns, Sleds, snowmobiles, pumps, a house for the pumps, piping, air compressors, fuel for these, generator, electricity (the pumps and Compressors at Taos draw so much when starting that it costs Taos Ski Valley about $1000 every start up in overload current draw. The lights at the valley actually dim. I wonder if the existing powerlines can carry that load I doubt it. Pajarito cannot even afford to keep its good, long time, devoted employees because it can't pay them. It takes about 6 people to operate a minimal snowmaking system. I am sure there are many other costs I am missing but you get the idea.

ELP NEWS WINTER QUARTER WEEK 5 February 3-7 FEBRUARY IS 2003 AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY MONTH Originally established as Negro History Week in 1926 by Dr. Carter G. Woodson, a noted African-American author and scholar, this event evolved into the establishment in 1976 of February as "Black History Month." This commemoration has increasingly been referred to as "African-American History Month," although both names are currently in use. Since 1926, The Association for the Study of Afro-American Life and History (ASALH) has established the national theme for the month-long celebration of Afro-American History Month. The National Theme for the celebration of Black History Month in the year 2003 is "The Souls of Black Folk: Centennial Reflections." The theme reflects on the evolving scholarship that W.E.B. DuBois expressed in The Souls of Black Folk (1903) and throughout his prolific career. http://usinfo.state.gov/usa/blackhis/history.htm Questions and answers about this celebration will follow.
