The Year the Cats eventually got the cream
By Amanda Fennelly Compared with seasons gone by, 2000 won't go down as a vintage year in hurling. For the Cats, it will hold a special place in their hearts, after they banished the heartbreak of the previous two All-Ireland final defeats with a blistering display against Offaly on the second Sunday in September. For the neutral, 2000 had its moments, the highlights being the All-Ireland semi-final between Cork and Offaly and the first Munster Final for nine years contested by old rivals Cork and Tipperary. But it had its fair share of disappointments too. The climax of the hurling season, the All-Ireland Final, was contested by provincial neighbours Kilkenny and Offaly for the second time in three years and unlike the close, exciting contest in 1998, this match was over inside ten minutes thanks to the prowess of one DJ Carey. With a final score of 5-15 to 1-14, it was the most one-sided All-Ireland for years yet the manner in which Kilkenny won it was breathtaking.
Ger Loughnane , resigned in 2000
The year 2000 also said goodbye to two great hurling managers - Cork's Jimmy Barry Murphy and Clare's Ger Loughnane - and welcomed back Derry to Croke Park for the first time in 92 years.

    BALLYHEANE HURLING CLUB
    By Veronica Rowe
There is a Hurling tradition in Ballyheane going back to the start of the century. This is as a direct result of the Garda Barracks which was situated in the village. Famous names such as Fadden, Kilcourse, McGreevy and Basquille arise wherever stories of this period are told.
Ballyheane Hurling Club was reformed at a meeting in Ballyheane Community Centre in September 1998. Con Ryan was elected chairman, Veronica Rowe secretary and Gerry Feehan treasurer.
The re-formation of the club sprang from the Community Games when Ballyheane toyed with the idea of entering a hurling team. The hurleys and helmets were supplied by Jackie Clarke, principal of Ballyheane N.S. Croke Parke and the Mayo Hurling Board were contacted and also helped with equipment such as hurleys, sliothars and helmets. Hurleys were in short supply due to a shortage of ash but the Club managed to source their own. Breaffy GAA Club were very supportive and put their facilities and structures at our disposal.
Some of the players The Club members took part in a Coaching Foundation Course organised by the Mayo Hurling Board in February 1999. Coaching Certificates were presented to the participants. The following events were organised for players:

var dayPARAM0 = 17; var dayPARAM1 = 4; var dayPARAM2 = "2003"; var dayPARAM3 = "Montreal GAA Annual Tournament"; Montreal Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA) was established in 1948 in order to promote Ireland’s two most popular national sports, Gaelic football and Hurling to the community of Montreal. The association is also known as the Montreal Shamrocks Hurling and Football club.
Gaelic football is an Irish field game similar to Australian Rules football and can be described as a mixture of soccer and rugby. Hurling is a spectacular field game somewhat similar to hockey, in that it is played with a small ball (sliothar) and a curved wooden stick (hurley or caman). It is Europe's oldest field game.
Montreal GAA also organises social events including live satellite television coverage of the All-Ireland Football and Hurling Championship games every Sunday morning during the summer months.
