I would like to assemble a team of students to research and develop a variety of ALTERNATE BICYCLE DESIGNS. Students engaged in these projects will design and fabricate high efficiency upright/prone/recumbent bicycles. The goal of this activity is to explore the human factors, aerodynamics and safety advantages of alternate bicycle design, as well as investigate alternative materials for use in prototype construction. The bicycles will incorporate full or partial fairing, and adhere to either the International Human Powered Vehicle Association (IHPVA) regulations for possible competition in the IHPVA speed championships, or the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) Human Powered Vehicle Challenge. Team requirements: 2 to 3 - MECHANICAL ENGINEERING STUDENTS with mechanisms and fluids experiences. - - drop me a line!

Hi! this is Russ Fales President of TyRus Human Powered Vehicles and the
Colorado event coordinator for the promotion of the Rock Mountain
Human Powered Speed Championships. A Human Powered Vehicle Association Member. TyRus HPV's would like to host a Recumbent Bicycle and Human Powered Race Event in
the Denver Metro Area of Colorado. Colorado is an ideal place for recumbents to race because of our altitude. We also have great
spectator support, for example; The Boulder Kinetic Race limits its ticket sales to spectators
because of room constraints. Colorado is also a central location for recumbent and human
powered competitors to meet.
TyRus HPV's has been developing a bicycle drive system for Recumbents and Human Power Vehicles. We are in the process of completing the newest and lightest model to date. To the untrained
eye this sleek, fast, recumbent design is bewildering.

page 2 The Rocky Mountain Human Powered Speed Championships will offer the fastest human powered vehicles in the World. Colorado's altitude will offer exciting race speeds and competition. These vehicles get noticed where ever they go. Even if it is a single rider out for a Sunday stroll, everyone turns their head to look. Recumbent bicycles are becoming more and more popular because of their comfort and more visible riding position. When partially faired higher commuting speeds are reached. A simple windshield can increase the speed of a recumbent bicycle. A full canopy can dramatically increase your speed. We need volunteers and sponsors to accomplish our goal of holding the Rocky Mountain Human Powered Speed Championships. we would like to offer you the opportunity to participate as an EVENT SPONSOR. This is a great way to promote you product. The event will offer local radio, newspaper and television coverage. Fox Sports has shown interest based on participants and spectatorship. In the past ESPN, the International Discovery channel (in 1996), and a cable TV show called Cool Tech (in 1998) covered this event, as well as Bicycle magazine and the HPVA news letter and web page. I believe this is a prime opportunity for a Lead Sponsor to receive excellent signage while helping us promote Human Power Technology.

Topics
In the Health and Power-block, Dr. Allan V. Abbott, USA, founding president of the IHPVA, talks about health benefits of various types of exercise. Then, Zamparo, Capelli and Cencigh, University of Udine, Italy, discuss the first measurements of the efficiency of a four wheel human powered recumbent vehicle and the energy cost riding it. Finally, Dr. Carl Georg Rasmussen, Leitra ApS, Denmark, tells the audience who needs power assistance and who doesn't!
Power for assists may come from Combustion: Based on his longtime experience with his two-stroke-internal combustion engine-assist, John Tetz, USA, derives the critical upper limits for the mass of small up-hill assist-units. Dr. Israel Urieli and Andy Ross, USA, explain how to use an external combustion Stirling-engine range extender to propel an electrically assisted hpv.
The chapter on Marketing and Transportation deals with how to bring these vehicles onto the street: Ed Benjamin (Idaho, USA) describes factors that influence sales of Pedelecs (pedal-electric bicycles) in the US market. German Eslava from cabbike (Germany and Italy) reports the experiences with assisted human powered vehicles in the European Union supported field test in Modena, Italy. Dr. Stefan Gloger, Darmstadt, Germany, discusses the criteria that influence the selection of traffic-modes by individuals.

I get to work daily on a bicycle, but everybody who spends time in the bicycle saddle begins to think if there might be a way to improve upon the old steed: make it more comfortable, safer to ride in traffic, more efficient, etc. Below are some alternatives I have dreamed up and tried to turn into reality.

Like the other vehicles shown here, it started as an experimental project using the frame of the 'rowing' bike you see below, but fitted with pedals. The aim was to test some ideas about FWD design, in particular the so-called "fixed bottom bracket" variety in which the chain twists as the steering is turned. It introduced some fascinating design parameters that challenge one's ingenuity. In some places it seems the wind always blows... Recumbent cycles can easily be fitted with a streamlined fairing that offers potential advantages, but also disadvantages, in strong winds.

University of Hawaii students speed through the endurance event's rider exchange.
"I don't know how to explain it, even in French, but it's very bizarre," says Bernard Gilbert, a recent ME graduate from the University of Laval, Quebec, describing what it feels like to pedal Cyclope, his school's prize-winning entry in the 15th annual Human Powered Vehicle Competition (HPV). At any other bicycle race the Cyclope, powered by two front wheels, steered by one rear wheel, covered with a yellow wind-fairing, and sporting a semi-reclined rider position, might attract much attention, but when surrounded by 40 other innovative machines geared for speed and/or comfort, the Cyclope was just one of the crowd. For instance, there was the Cadi S.S., an entry from the University of Arizona. This swanky four-wheeled vehicle made use of a suspension system, took second overall in the practical vehicle category, and was a looker to boot. "With a really minimal amount of money they made quite the luxurious vehicle; it was definitely a work of art," says David Trevino, event director and a ME student at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), this year's host school.

HPV stands for Human Powered Vehicle. Human Powered Vehicles are aerodynamic, highly engineered vehicles that may be for use on land, in the water or the air. Some land-based HPV's have achieved speeds of over 60 mph. After all, this is the age of computers. The point of the competition is the elegance and ingenuity of the design, including presentation, practicality and safety. All areas of engineering problem-solving are addressed - it's not as simple as it appears to design and build these vehicles. And the competition itself is great fun for the team.

Human Powered Vehicles
By Greg Bryant From the Encyclopedia of Energy Technology and the Environment, FUNCTIONAL OVERVIEW Commuting Cycle commuting has become available to a wider ridership through fascinating designs developed over many years. Lightweight and sophisticated adult tricycles provide stability to people with balance trouble. Fun-to-ride hand-cranked cycles greatly aid the commuting paraplegic. Recumbent cycles, whose aerodynamic frame sports a low-slung, comfortable backed chair instead of a seat post, have opened commuting to the those needing back support, as well as the injured, elderly and handicapped. Shock-absorbing systems, which began to make serious strides with the introduction of the pneumatic tire in 1888, now include suspension systems and cantilevered seats, making more terrain traversable by those with weak constitutions. Hauling The next most common cycling applications involve the use of cycling trailers, either the two-wheel or more narrow one-wheel varieties. These are used for carrying toddlers to day-care, fetching groceries, moving sacks of sod, or shifting other loads from 10 to 500 pounds, depending on the size and strength of the trailer and rider. Most cycles do not come with a trailer hitch, so the consumer must make something of a conceptual leap, and a modest investment, in order to obtain the complete rigging. Currently in the U.S., construction companies, landscapers and chimney sweeps are among the users of bike trailers. With eighteen gears and a strong pair of legs, most materials, especially those transported short distances, can be hauled with currently marketed trailers. The designs are remarkably simple: basically light-weight versions of the trailers that attach to automobiles, with the axle a bit in front of the center of gravity.

A Human Powered Vehicle is any vehicle moving in the air, in the water or on land mainly by human muscle power. A traditional bicycle is a good example on one. A notable additional example are recumbent bicycles. They come in two wheel and the extremely stable three wheel versions. There are models for many kinds of uses. The most notable difference from traditional bikes is that the rider sits in a kind of chair, in a somewhat lying position, and the pedals are located in the front of the vehicle. The major advantages of this design are better aerodynamics and a position more natural for the human body. The riding experience is rather different from the conventional bikes, and can offer many new aspects of biking fun.

The Ground Hugger XR2 recumbent bicycle was recently developed as an in-house project. It takes the idea of lifestyle impacts on energy demand a bit farther. We’ve seen how a sort of "purist" attitude can become a mindset and get people turned on to certain activities. I n the name of fitness, people run until they drop from exhaustion with no actual destination in mind. And smart, educated folks like us do manual labor, like weightlifting and rowing stationary machines, without actually accomplishing anything, other than feeling and looking better. Today, cycling enthusiasts pay $2,000 or more for high-tech bicycles that provide little real additional benefit in actual performance - once you break the $1000-dollar price barrier. Most of the appeal has to do with the pleasure of enjoying fine craftsmanship and beautiful design, and getting turned on to a sort of mental image of what it means to be part of an elite group - to sort of wear the image. So with the right practical support and innovative product design, it’s easy to envision that the idea of combining fresh-air fitness with the need to go somewhere could become the "in" thing to do. It just wouldn’t be cool anymore to use a ton of hardware to travel three miles to work. These are mindset challenges that can be influenced by product design and marketing messages.

Early history of recumbents...
Recumbent bikes are not really unusual in Australia, with some old-timers remembering the first ones arriving in the early 1930s during their first burst of popularity. Unfortunately this popularity ended quickly when the International cycle-racing organisation, the UCI, banned them from racing due to their obvious aerodynamic superiority. It was the French rider, Francis Faure who broke several of the established world cycling records, including the prestigious one hour record, which led to the ban on this type of bicycle in April, 1934. (Faure rode the Charles Mochet designed "Velocar" recumbent bike over 45km in one hour in the 1930's) More recently...
The resurgence of these bikes has seen racing occur outside the strict UCI rules. World Championships are now held every year alternating between North America and Europe, though racing has been mostly centred in the more cycle friendly European countries. We have been holding HPV races in Australia since 1990. Recumbent Links:

This is the first comprehensive book ever written about human-powered vehicles (HPVs). Filled with 180 impressive photographs, detailed drawings, and tables, Human-Powered Vehicles explains the history of HPVs, offers practical insights into their design, and considers future possibilities of human-powered travel. Allan V. Abbott and David Gordon Wilson, HPV designers and former presidents of the International Human Powered Vehicle Association, have assembled a list of contributors representing a who's who of leaders in human-powered vehicles. They review the development of human-powered water, land, and air vehicles, focusing on the innovations that have significantly improved performance in recent years. Part I describes early applications of human power to machines, giving examples of every major type of mechanism used to harness human power. It also explains relevant exercise physiology and biomechanical principles as they relate to the human engine.
